The Aggies had a game tonight...
And I forgot about it completely, cooked dinner, watched a tv show with my wife, and played some NHL 17 before realizing they may have had a game. So I checked. Astonished that they won. Even more astonished that I didn't have a single thought about it all night long.

We are the most fair weather fans I have ever seen. Yes things are down, but we so called grownups are not showing a good example to the players and young fans on how to work through difficult times. What happened to Aggie Nation through thick and thin? Obviously it only exists when things are good. Shame on us all!!!

Not exactly apples to apples, but I'm a huge movie fan. Because I'm a movie fan am I expected to support a terrible movie by going to see it in a theater? When a product is not good, and I'm paying for it, Aggie fans have every right to show more support for a good production. I applaud those fans that support through thick and thin. If the entire world was like this we would have a very mediocre world as there would be no reason to put a good production together if good and bad were supported equally.

My wife is loving the Wells/Duryea era of Aggie sports. My Aggie consumption is next to nothing right now.SuperiorBlueDiver wrote:And I forgot about it completely, cooked dinner, watched a tv show with my wife, and played some NHL 17 before realizing they may have had a game. Re: The Aggies had a game tonight...
Just not true. The Aggies have been down for 6 years now; our administration chose to hire someone that had been part of watching the team go down for 4 years; this will be the first losing season in over 20 years; the style of basketball lacks discipline and toughness; and finally, we are not high school anymore -- expectations are real and attendance is going to be affected by poor performance.Agezzz wrote:We are the most fair weather fans I have ever seen. Re: The Aggies had a game tonight...
I'm as guilty as anyone, as I have only been to two b-ball games this year (at UVU and in SLC vs yBu) and only have only really watched the games on the ESPN networks (Including ESPN3) or Root, as I don't want to pay for CBSSports and don't want to go through the very minimal hassle of hooking up my laptop to my TV for the MW Network games. In years past, I would have been sure to watch all of these.FeartheFro wrote:Not exactly apples to apples, but I'm a huge movie fan. However, I feel bad about missing these games, not because the product is good, but because I believe that watching/attending the games can have a direct impact on the product later by contributing to tv ratings & income, ticket sales, concession sales, etc. Spending money on a movie will never make it a better movie, but spending money on Aggie athletics can help make the teams better down the road.
But again, I'm as guilty as anyone this year.

Re: The Aggies had a game tonight...
I go to most of the home games and have done so for almost 50 years, BUT I've always looked at USU sports differently than high school sports. So while I'm loyal to USU, I don't feel obligated to be loyal to players or coaches (and don't know most of them personally on purpose so I don't lose objectivity because I like them as a person). I expect them to put on an above average product, or I want them to leave so someone else can.dhilk3785 wrote:I'm as guilty as anyone, as I have only been to two b-ball games this year (at UVU and in SLC vs yBu) and only have only really watched the games on the ESPN networks (Including ESPN3) or Root, as I don't want to pay for CBSSports and don't want to go through the very minimal hassle of hooking up my laptop to my TV for the MW Network games. Re: The Aggies had a game tonight...
I agree that spending money on Aggie athletics provides USU with revenue that can be invested back into the program. Spending money on a bad movie won't make the movie better, but it will provide revenue to those behind its creation and help enable them to produce another one.dhilk3785 wrote:I'm as guilty as anyone, as I have only been to two b-ball games this year (at UVU and in SLC vs yBu) and only have only really watched the games on the ESPN networks (Including ESPN3) or Root, as I don't want to pay for CBSSports and don't want to go through the very minimal hassle of hooking up my laptop to my TV for the MW Network games. I doubt I'll ever stop buying season tickets - but I don't think I can tell anyone else how to spend their money and trying to guilt and shame alumni into paying for something they don't want to is not really ethical IMO. Athletics are entertainment - if they lose fanbase it is not the fault of the fanbase

The Wells era has seen two of our best seasons ever. Things aren't going our way now, but I am hopeful about Yost and some changes in the offense next year can deliver us back to winning seasons and bowl trips.hipsterdoofus21 wrote:My wife is loving the Wells/Duryea era of Aggie sports. Re: The Aggies had a game tonight...
People in my ward comment they don't know whether I have anything that doesn't say USU on it. But, living in Colorado I've only been to one game this year (vs AFA) but I do stream games when I can, though it has become less of a priority. Won't be attending the tournament this year either.aggies22 wrote:Anyone that knows me, knows that I am never seen without one or more items of Aggie gear on!bigblue wrote:I still wear my Aggie gear no matter how much we suck.

Re: The Aggies had a game tonight...
I feel like I can put my finger on the situation, because 10 years ago I was excited to go do anything Utah State. Maybe it was the energy, excitement and passion that GA exuberated (sp?) onto our fan base. I'm not saying we need to get GA back as the only thing to revive our fan base.hipsterdoofus21 wrote:My wife is loving the Wells/Duryea era of Aggie sports. I feel like Duryea and Wells have been at times apathetic to what the fans are feeling. It's a fine line from their side because they need to focus on the program not what fans say. But to me they aren't getting people excited to come watch the games like GA would. Stew's teams from 2000-2011 had this blue collar mentality, they worked extra hard to out hustle the opponent and it was a thing of beauty.
AggiesForever pointed out earlier this year that this team wasn't worthy to wear the jerseys with Utah State's name on it. I think because there was an impression of jack potting around on the floor (as Jerry Sloan would say).
These examples, imho, are the reason the football and basketball programs have been trending downward since 2012 roughly speaking.
I am encouraged by the recent improvement in effort, and I hope this is because of Spencer Nelson's influence on this team. If each player could clone his effort he played with back when he was a junior and senior I think we could win the MWC tournament. If not it's a usual one and done scenario.
Personally, I would be more likely to hang through the thick and thin if I felt like both programs including all athletes were playing every minute like it was their last. Also, if they fought harder for each other as a team I think this would go a long ways. I think they are headed that direction, it's going to take awhile to get there at some positions etc.
I am just glad I never went to ybu, I can't stand them,

NOT the most fair weather fans. We are fans. Go to any arena and youll find a myriad of empty seats if the team isnt doing well. I dont care where you go. Either accept the fact that people like to see winners or up your cholesterol med dosage.Agezzz wrote:We are the most fair weather fans I have ever seen. Re: The Aggies had a game tonight...
Personally I have enjoyed my life not being as emotionally invested in Aggie sports. My wife spent a long time dealing with me constantly being gone all day Saturdays, camping out for tickets, pacing around the house worried about something that held no significance on having a strong home. Being away from Logan gave me the balance I needed, and if that means Im not a "true fan" I'm cool with it.

My Aggie fandom did create grief with my relationships in the past. I have learned to control it among other things.

My wife has always been great. She goes with me most of the time. If the kids have something she will take care of that while I enjoy Aggie sports. She is mad at me that my fanhood has dipped this year. She's the best.

Re: The Aggies had a game tonight...
Article from May 15, 2011:
Will the Warriors ever produce another We Believe era?
The Warriors have made the playoffs once in the past 17 years, while owning the NBA's second-worst winning percentage during the last 16 years. A Warriors' fan since the early '90s, Robles says that supporting a losing team for so long can only mean one thing: loyalty.
"As a fan, you want to see a winning team," said Robles, 34. "It's painful to see our Warriors lose year after year. But we [fans] just keep coming back."
Every year, seats are nearly full at Oracle Arena, yet fans’ hopes are dashed by mediocre team performances and poor results. Due to their feverish support, loyalty has become the fans' trademark. It’s easy to support a winner, but supporting a losing product for so long—well, Golden State fans know all about that.
“It's hard to say why fans are so loyal,” said 28-year-old James Pearson, a Warriors columnist on Bleacher Report. “It's quite incredible, really."
Hmmm. It sucks that all the loyalty and support of the Warrior's fans have kept the team in a cycle of mediocrity.
