Senior night for Shane Rector
Shane was Duryea's first signee as a head coach -- TD closed his introductory press conference with "I'm leaving from here to go to Miami to sign a difference maker" (quoting from memory). Shane brought a different skill set than we've seen here in a while -- the Bronx street-smart quick dribble penetration for a degree-of-difficulty finish, the crooked-arm jump shot, surprising ups for a little guy. I was at the MIssouri State game last year (hi GameFaqs!). We were down 1 with ten seconds to go. Shane drove from the top of the key hard to the right side of the rim, put up a shot which was swatted out of bounds. Undeterred, he got the ball back at the top of the key again, drove hard to the left side of the rim, drew the foul, swished the free throws with that ugly shot of his, and we won by 1.
But it never quite became his team last year, since he was starting alongside Darius Perkins, the incumbent PG, and Chris Smith. Even so we ended up with both season and conference records similar to this year, as he's seen himself displaced by Koby and Sam. I was always a little frustrated with his game and wished for more leadership, though that can be hard as a juco transfer. But he could be exciting to watch, and it would have been interesting to see his game with Collette rather than Lew Evans as his low court scoring and rebounding option. Que sera.
A good Aggie, and I wish him well. Enjoy Senior Night.

Re: Senior night for Shane Rector
So much potential in Rector, I'll miss a little of the street fight mentality and clutch shooting. He won a handful of games for us at the end. Maybe our best clutch player in my lifetime (more finishes than Spicer).

Re: Senior night for Shane Rector
I think Rector just didn't have enough talent around him and so he took on more pressure to produce offensively. Our bigs could never understand how to take advantage of Rector's driving ability and to be ready for the dunk when he passed it off. He seemed to stop trying to dump it off once he realized our bigs couldn't catch the ball consistently, cut appropriately, or finish without getting blocked at the rim. I think he could've been a Bernard Rock type PG for us if we'd had better post players. He was a big reason we had so many open threes last year for Perkins, Smith, and Moore to hit.
Thanks Shane. I wish we could've seen what you could do during the Stew years.

My best memories of him are the clutch late-game free throws and the Idaho state game this year.

Ironically, that's also one of the worst memories of USU basketball -- needing clutch free throws and the end of a game to beat (gulp) Idaho State.

Whoops, my bad. I meant Utah Valley. No less embarrassing than Idaho State, but the comment has lost its impact now.
Carry on.

Re: Senior night for Shane Rector
I've heard from someone within the UVU program that in OOC play they put 100% of their preparation into the in state games. They beat BYU in the Marriott Center and nearly beat Utah in the Huntsman center. They are also a better team than Idaho State.Yossarian wrote:donlarson8 wrote:Uh, we beat Idaho State by 34...Yossarian wrote:donlarson8 wrote:My best memories of him are the clutch late-game free throws and the Idaho state game this year.
