With today's loss to NM, USU is still leading the MWC, but only by 1 game in the loss column. USU, after tomorrow's final game with NM, has 6 games left -- 3 away at SJS and 3 at home against SDS. Those two teams currently sit in 2nd and 3rd places, respectively, behind USU. Every game is now a big game.
SJS and SDS each have 9 games remaining after tomorrow's games. Each has 3 games at home and 6 on ther road. Clearly the advantage is USU's but the team still needs to win its games.
There is no end-of-year conference tournament so the winner of the regular season is the conference winner and will advance to the regional tournament and then hopefully to the super regionals. Go Aggies!

This is quite a feat as they have a major disadvantage with the weather.

Re: Womens Softball
USU's first 25 games of the season were away from Logan. They went 16-5 with the other 4 games cancelled, probably on account of weather. None of the games were conference games. So I would say you are correct in saying that they had a major disadvantage.Jjoey52 wrote:This is quite a feat as they have a major disadvantage with the weather.

BTW, USU beat New Mexico in the series rubber match. If the Aggies go 4-2 the rest of the way they'll be hard to catch in the race for the championship. And 3 of those games are at home.
Re: Womens Softball
Two HUGE series coming up for the team. As utaggies said, 4-2 basically guarantees a conference title. 3-3 and I'd say there's still a decent shot. But this weekend they've got SDSU at home, and all support for the team will be huge.

Re: Womens Softball
USU has never won a series against SDS. This weekend would be a good time to end that streak. SDS is only 1 game behind the Aggies in the loss column so I think we need to at least go 2-1 to give us some space. The first game looms HUGE. Anything less than winning the series results in the pucker factor going up considerably. I hate it when the destiny of any of our teams is in someone else's hand. Let's do this Aggies!

Re: Womens Softball
USU beat SDS 4-2 in the first game of today's double-header and are now 2 games up in the loss column to the Aztecs. SJS is still only 1 game behind the Aggies in the loss column but play a double-header tomorrow again a good NM team. If the Aggies sweep the Aztecs we'll be looking good. But this season will probably come down to the wire. Again, no season ending conference tournament. The regular season champion represents the conference in the regional tournament working towards the national championship.
As ever, go Aggies!

Re: Womens Softball
Two VERY exciting games today and two wins over the Aztecs! This team is seriously good. Freshman pitcher Kelly White allowed only 4 hits against the team with the highest hitting % in the nation. A win tomorrow will all but clinch a MW title, although the SJSU series next week could be big.

Re: Womens Softball
Probably better stated, 32 conference winners automatically are included in the 64-team tournament. 32 at-large teams are also selected. Of the 64 teams, 16 are seeded into one of the 16 regional college sites where 4 teams will compete in a double-elimination tournament.QuackAttackAggie wrote:There isn't a conference tournament so winner goes to the world series

The 16 winners advance to the super regionals at 8 college sites, where 2 teams per site play a best two-out-of-three games.
8 teams from the super regionals advance to the college world series where they will compete in a double elimination tournament. When it gets down to 2 teams remaining, they will square off in a best two-out-of-three games for the championship.
Any team that runs that gauntlet deserves the championship!

Re: Womens Softball
So much for the sweep against SDS. We're down 15-2 in the 4th inning. Even so, taking the series was all we needed to do. But if SJS sweeps NM today (they are currently tied in the last game of the series), USU and SJS will be tied in the loss column with the 3-games series next week being HUGE. SJS still needs to go to UNLV for a season ending series. Regardless, USU must go into the SJS series believing it must take 2 of 3 games.
The question is, could USU get one of the 32 at-large berths to the national softball tourney?

Re: Womens Softball
Yeah, today was a really nasty loss. USU gave up TWO grand slams in the game, the pitching wasn't nearly as good as we saw yesterday. However, they're still in a control-their-own-destiny type situation. The series with San Jose State next weekend will be HUGE. If USU sweeps or even gets two of the three they are in a very good spot.
I don't know if an at-large bid is on the table or not at this point, but a win at BYU in the last game of the season could be a nice resume booster

Re: Womens Softball
If USU wins two of the three games in the San Jose series, it should be almost impossible for San Jose to catch them. USU is the only team in the conference to have won all of their three game series (seven) thus far; that includes San Jose. Even though the series is in San Jose, it won't actually be at SJSU, as their facilities are being renovated. That should cut into the home field advantage a bit. Not like San Jose has had much home crowd support in any sport.
If we don't win the conference, there is a possibility of an at large bid to the NCAA tournament, but I wouldn't count on it. On the other hand, this will be the first year for the National Invitational Softball Championship, a 48 team tournament sponsored by Triple Crown Sports. Triple Crown Sports also sponsors the pre and post season WNIT, the men's and women's Cancun Challenge, and a 64 team National Invitational Volleyball Championship. The second place team in the MWC will get an automatic invitation to the NISC, if they don't get an at large to the NCAAs.
It is killing me to live so far from Logan. When I retire and move back, I'm going to all the home games of every sport. I have 35 years of absence to make up for.
Go AGGIES!

Re: Womens Softball
After being up 3-0 against the Spartans, the Aggies gave up 7 runs and lost the first game of the series 7-3. SJS now goes up 1 game in the loss column. The Aggies really need tomorrow's game and probably Sunday's, too. I don't know what the tie breaker is. Ifd it's head-to-head, these three games are the onbly ones the Aggies have played against SJS this year.

It looks like sjsu and usu will be playing a different amount of games, which is odd. There is an NIT type tournament this year too. Guessing usu misses out on the conference championship.

Not starting good for the Aggies. Bottom of the 1st with the score 0-0. But the bases are loaded with no outs. Yikes!

Re: Womens Softball
Now 2 games down in the loss column and for the first time this year the Aggies lose a conference series. The only chance the Aggies now have is to beat SJS in tomorrow's finale and then hope the Spartans lose 2 of 3 games in their final series next week. Alternatively, the Aggies could finish 2nd in the conference and hope for one of the 33 at-large berths or to be invited to the NIT. Regardless, it has been a very good year for the Aggies.QuackAttackAggie wrote:Softball isn't going to win the championship but what a rapid improvement for the program

Re: Womens Softball
Alas. We went into the final series against SJS needing to take 2 of 3 games and we got swept. We ended the season on a 4-game losing streak. We now await NCAA and NIT bids. Maybe we back in to getting an invite.

Re: Womens Softball
The Aggies make the softball NIT uesterday but the bid is bitter-sweet. We sputtered through the finish on a 5-game losing streak, finishing behind SJS and SDS, and tying with Fresno St. for 3rd/4th in the conference. Those three teams all received invites to the NCAA tournament as did BYU and Utah. One win in the last 4 conference games would have probably gotten us into the NCAAs. Three wins and we would have won the conference.
Let's now go have a good showing in the post-season and extend the season.

It would have been nice to finish that series with Fresno. That may have been the difference.

Re: Womens Softball
I don't think San Diego St. made the tourney either. I thought it was weird that Fresno made it in ahead of them. They finished ahead of them and had a better RPI. I think it may be a legacy pick because Fresno has been a good team historically.
If people think college football is rigged just look at women's softball. 13 out of the 14 SEC teams made it into the tournament. Only 12 teams have won the WCWS since its inception in 1982.
Ags play in Ogden starting Wednesday I believe. They start with San Diego.

Re: Womens Softball
SDS's website says the Aztecs play Texas. The NCAA tournament website says Texas plays Texas State. Something's screwy. I find it hard to believe that SDS would be touting its bid had it not received one. I think the NCAA softball website made a mistake mixxing up Texas St. and SDS.NVAggie wrote:I don't think San Diego St. made the tourney either. It would be odd for FSU to go to the NCAA ahead of SDS who finished ahead of the Billdogs in the confernce.

Re: Womens Softball
I must have been seeing things. SDS is not going to any post-season tourney. Something is weird. Perhaps their APR scores or a penalty is preventing the 2nd place Aztecs from competing while the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th place MWC teams will be participating.utaggies wrote:SDS's website says the Aztecs play Texas. Re: Womens Softball
So this seems like a big choke job by the Aggie softballers, no? To go from needing one, maybe two wins over SJSU to seal up the conference championship to getting swept by the Spartans and then another beating at the hands of byu as part of a 5-game losing streak to end the year seems pretty bad. Hopefully they come back more mentally tough and seasoned for next year.

Re: Womens Softball
Come on, guy, that's a little harsh. The Aggies won seven conference series. The last two conference teams they played were the first and second place teams in the conference. The only series they lost was to the conference champions, San Jose. BYU is a top 20 team. I don't think that's a choke job at all. For crying out loud, they're going to post season play! The progress of the team in the last three years has been phenomenal. I expect next year to be as good, possibly better.Yossarian wrote:So this seems like a big choke job by the Aggie softballers, no? Ladies fall 2-0 to Weber in second round game. Play Boise later today in loser's bracket if the weather cooperates.
Update: lost 10-2 to Boise. Season over, but nice that they made a postseason appearance after MANY years of so-so softball. Nice job ladies.
