WBB Coaching Candidates

Post by shoresy » March 11th, 2024, 11:23 am

Now that Utah State has decided to move on, I'm ready to feel some excitement about our women's basketball program again.

I'm more bullish than most on the caliber of coach we could attract here. We've lost a lot recently, but there's no reason a good coach couldn't turn things around QUICK. Let's throw some names out there.

I get why they wouldn't want to hire him given that he was an assistant on this year's team, but Lindsay Woolley should get an interview. He won 215 games in 11 seasons and an NAIA national title as the HC at Montana Western. He's only been an assistant here for 1 year, Gino Auriemma could have been an assistant here this year and I'm not convinced it would have mattered much.

Sabau's from the Big ten, let's just go grab one of their coaches. I honestly don't know anything about the women's coaching scene, but I hope we can get someone in to turn it around, and hopefully focus on the state of Utah as well.

Woolley does have a strong resume. I'd be curious to hear how the players feel about him, and to know how/why he ended up here.

Also curious if a new coach would be willing to keep him on staff. It would be hard to blame a coach for wanting to clean house entirely, but I also don't hate the idea of keeping someone like that around.

Sounds like there's going to a solid pool of interested candidates, particularly given the success of the men's team plus the recent turnarounds from volleyball and soccer.

Like, yeah, it's a challenging job and will be tough to build the program from the ground up. BUT. There's good facilities and resources. The conference isn't uber challenging to compete in. And if you can just win ~15 games a year within three seasons, you're probably getting an extension from USU if not a promotion to a higher school. I think people will be surprised by who throws their hat into the ring.

Yes. Jaycee is an Aggie Legend, but HARD pass on that. You don't hire a high school coach with no experience anywhere close to the D1 level. Not to mention his team was 13-12 this year.

We have a lot of assistants who have been here in the past and gone off to bigger, better programs. Karlie Burris is at UNLV, Jauwan Scaife is at Virginia Tech, JC Carter is at Texas Tech, Taylor Ignoto is at South Dakota.

Though, I don't think I'd go with any of those. Probably best to get a fresh start.

I think it would be good to get someone with head coaching experience ….this is a significant rebuild. I don’t know if they’d leave their current posts, but Tricia Binford at Montana St and Jory Collins at North Dakota St have done quite well.

I mentioned this in another thread but I think John Wardenburg might be worth a look. Has a pretty good resume and worked with men’s basketball at SUU under Todd Simon and has had a stint with Women’s at that school past Utah Valley. (There are likely other candidates who may be better) but I think he’d be worth a look.

WBB Coaching Candidates

Post by AGGIEinIOWA » March 12th, 2024, 11:28 am

Aaron Johnston at South Dakota State would be a great get but after 24 seasons there and tons of success, I’m not sure he’d leave considering he hasn’t left yet despite all his success.

Molly Miller at Grand Canyon has done nothing but win. She’d be a great candidate.

I think there are 3-4 Big Sky head coaches that I’d consider.

Tricia Binfird from Montana State has had 17 straight winning seasons as head coach there. Former professional player. Maybe Sprinkle has some connections.

Loree Payne has done a good job of building a really bad NAU program into a conference contender in the Big Sky. She was successful at Puget Sound before that. She grew up in Montana and played at Washington so she has ties out West.

I think Joddie Gleason at EWU would also be a good candidate.

Montana’s Brian Holsinger wouldn’t be a bad get either.

JD Gustin from Utah Tech has done a respectable job and certainly knows Utah recruiting.

Nabbing a highly regarded assistant coach from Utah like Gavin Petersen, BYU like Lee Cummard or Morgan Bailey, could be options. I like getting someone with strong Utah recruiting ties.

I don't think Molly Miller is leaving GCU for anything other than a p5 position. This program is in the outhouse, so it's doubtful that someone from a midmajor will make a lateral move to take on this. I think we need to look at other coaches who have been successful and where they came from.

Jordy at NDSU was from D2, Gordy Presnell was from D2, Molly Miller was from D2. I think we need someone who has been successful from a lower level who is willing to grind it out and do more with less to get us back to where we can be.

Carmen Dolfo- Western Washington- she has been there for a long time and has established one of the best programs in the country each year.

Ryan McCarthy- Alaska Anchorage- routinely beats D1's and has also been very successful. Seems like he is in on jobs every year.

Brittany Simpson- Colorado Mines- has one of the best programs in Colorado and has Utah ties.

I don't think this level is the answer, but it has paid off well recently and I think we need to add these names to our list!

Love these D2 ideas. Really really good ones. Especially Carmen Dolfo. Mike Williams at Grand Valley State has also been really good. I’ll say this, Marshall hired a highly successful D2 coach and just won their conference and conference tourney. It’s worth hiring someone with a lot of success at the D2 level.

I don't know what the administration is going to prioritize in a candidate (HC experience, P5 assistant, Utah ties, etc.) and thus, USU could end up switching gears from what I've heard and end up hiring someone mentioned above or someone similar. But judging from who I've heard to be some of the preliminary candidates and targets, I think people here are aiming a little low. Or at least, I think the department's casting their net a little higher in addition to some of these names from smaller schools.

She is a five star recruit. We are a sub-340 NET program. Let it go, guys.

No shes definitely not, but I don’t think it would hurt to look at the coaching staffs at those schools anyways. Those assistants would be good recruiters and coming from solid programs.

If we hire Lee Cummard, as an added bonus, if an LSU/South Carolina situation every develops, he can send his wife down onto the court. Based on her track record, she could probably KO half of the opposing team by herself.

For anyone who doesn't get the reference:

https://archive.sltrib.com/story.php?re ... ci_8592901

Ever since this fight, the MWC tournament has put up barriers to prevent fans from rushing the court. The mwcboard.com fans used to call it the "Sarah Cummard Memorial Wall."

BYU athletics is classy, as always. It's truly the LDS Church's greatest missionary tool.
