Re: Depth chart predictions

Speaking of depth (or, perhaps breadth), I watched our game at Fresno last season this evening. While watching, Anderson was bringing the ball down the court and breaking pressure easily. I wondered, "Is Anderson our most versatile player?" He plays post when we go small. He can shoot from beyond t...

Sam Vecenie on Sam Merrill: "I think he's gonna get picked"

The Athletic's NBA draft expert Sam Vecenie talks to an old friend of USU, Tony Jones, on the Game Theory podcast . The whole podcast is worth a listen for NBA fans, but they discuss Merrill's NBA prospects for about 5 minutes at 54:40 of the podcast. And here's another excellent NBA scouting report...

Re: Recruiting

Don't forget Bernard Rock, Mark Brown, Jared Quayle, and Kris Clark. Quayle and Clark definitely struggled with the full court press from athletic teams. My memory of Brown is a little hazy so maybe he handled the press better than I remember, but I intentionally started the 20-year window post-Roc...

Re: Recruiting

It's looking to me like another year of constant heart attacks every time an athletic team starts heavily pressuring us and playing full court defense. While this is true, it has also been true for at least the last 20 years with the exception of Brockeith Pane's tenure. The Aggies have gone 461-19...

Re: Incoming freshmen

I would dare say that coming off serving a mission is more difficult than coming in as a freshman out of high school. I don't think you can make a blanket statement about which is more difficult. It varies by the athlete. Some benefit from the additional years of physical growth. Some are hindered ...

Let's be honest, the biggest thing holding him back is that he's white and American. If he were from Serbia he'd be a late first-round pick.
If Sam’s wingspan was 6’11”, regardless of nationality, he would be a late first round pick.

Two very smart guys, Sam Vecenie and John Hollinger, both think there's a chance. There's more discussion in that thread suggesting he's a two-way contract guy if he doesn't get drafted.

What about Brito and Miller? Brito hasn’t been any worse. Yeah, he’s had some horrendous turnovers at the worst possible moments, but that’s not indicative of his overall level of play. And he still brings it defensively. As for his 3pt shooting? He’s a true ~30% shooter who got hot last year and h...

We moved up three spots over idle teams because we beat lowly SJSU? I know I've said it before, but I'm still not buying the NET's supposed cap on margin of victory at 10. Take, for example, when St. Mary's beat Arizona State by 40. They moved up from #64 to #36. I know it was only 12 games into th...

Didn’t seem to me that the offense “let Miller shoot” so much as Miller was the only guy willing to take shots. Miller has a tendency to force bad shots but he was good tonight. His only glaringly bad shot was because he thought the shot clock was expiring. The wide open corner three he missed was ...

This is a USU-specific troll right? In, I think, 2013, I attended a La Tech/USU game that La Tech won by 20 or so.

Their 8-person student section did “winning team losing team.” I figured this happens with other teams in the the conference, but maybe not?

Personally, I think the apparent chemistry issues are basketball-fit related. Bean is a better player than Taylor in a vacuum, but Taylor was a better fit with Queta. When two of your three best players are bigs that don’t shoot, you’re going to have to do some line-up gymnastics. Here’s hoping Smit...

Bean is 6'7" 210 and Yolie is 6'8" 225 Its not that much of a difference. I believe you will see tomorrow night that it is actually quite a significant difference. Not only that but it's more about the 4-5" of wingspan difference than the 1" of height difference. I have no idea what Bean's wingspan...

Not the most exciting game or high profile opponent, but a personal favorite that hasn't been mentioned is the 2009 WAC championship. March is what matters. And these upcoming games will be the most important of the regular season in terms of assuring the team plays well into March. 0-3 against UF/SMC/LSU leaves the Aggies with little-to-no breathing room.It also means last year's team will have had two better wins (UNR, SMC) tha...

How does an opposing team defend or attack this potential lineup?
(using the traditional 1-5 position tags)

1- Bairstow 6'8
2- Merrill 6'5
3- Bean 6'7
4- Queta 7'0
5- Karwowski 7'2
It would be very hard to score against this line-up. It would be even harder for this line-up to score.

Kenpom's preseason rankings are indeed nebulous, but they are not arbitrary. Nor do they include any polls. It's all math that's way above my head, but it's all math based on prior seasons. I believe he uses recruiting rankings, similarity scores and that sort of thing to evaluate the newcomers. The...

If it was based upon last season Nevada would be higher..I think he is just guessing. It's based on previous years, but does factor in departures & newcomers. Say what you want about Kenpom, but he doesn't guess. The formula adjusts quickly, though. USU jumped from ~150 to ~50 in just a couple game...

His reasoning was that we were one of the "surprise" teams last year. Often times, surprise teams are a flash in the pan and then they regress to the mean. That's all that was taken into account. The fact that many other "surprise" teams in the past have regressed back down to their usual place. Wh...

Talking sense into Queta would mean telling him to stay in the Draft. Potentially moving up 5-10 spots is not worth the (very high) risk of a career-ending injury. The announcers recognized that the ten second call was wrong, but the broadcast cut right to commercial right as the definitive angle was shown. They did completely miss the Queta trip, though, which was pretty infuriating.

They also called Brown the only senior on the team.
