Re: Which seed?

It's looking like the smaller conferences are going to fill the 22 12-16 slots. So don't look for USU to be a 12. And since conference champions are not selected to be in a play-in game, 4 of the 11 slots are filled. So did a win over SDSU (plus no more losses) move USU past the other 2 11 seeds. Pr...

I remember watching John Stockton's shot that sent the Jazz to the NBA finals over and over.

I think I will watch highlights of this game more - even in just the next 8 days.

What about Jameser?
Merril is ahead of Jamesr in 3-point makes in a career, in 20-point games at the Conference Tournament, in number of tournament MVP trophies. And in tournament championships.

Here's hoping for moving ahead of him in NCAA wins.

Re: First team to punch ticket

I'll take a stab. No. If your conference tournament ends on Selection Sunday Eve (as the BW, WAC, and MW have always done in the past) several small conferences would already have crowned their champion. This year is an anomaly. However, I do believe that USU was the first underdog to win in the Big...

Re: Who to cheer for

More good data: This morning, the bracket matrix http://www.bracketmatrix.com had 43 teams ahead of USU (not counting SDSU). Today's results will shake that up a bit, but those 43 teams come from 9 different conferences. That means that 34 of the teams ahead of USU are guaranteed to have at least on...

Re: Thank you Sam! Aggie Legend. You persevered

Sam hit 2 NBA distance 3s - each to give the team a lead. Over Flynn to take a lead while trailing. And over Feagin for the game winner when tied.

It's worth noting that Flynn was the conference DPOY. And Feagin 'owned' Merrill this year.

Sometimes, you just can't keep a Good Sam down.

After the Aggies closed to 29-28, they had 5 turnovers in 5 minutes (over six possessions). The score was 37-30 and SDSU looked like they had weathered the storm.

Enter Alphonso. 2 threes later it was 37-36 and back to game on.

Who to cheer for

One of the best benefits of today’s win is that the committee has no way to vote USU out. So instead of trying to see which teams to cheer for to avoid our bubble bursting, it becomes easy. We want the lowest seed in every conference to win the auto-bid. Each time that happens it pushes the Aggies u...

Game winning shot while guarded by Feagin - the guy that CBS showed as owning Merrill. Statistically may be the best player in MWC tournament history.

I was confused by the 5-second closely guarded rule. It was eliminated a few years ago - but only when a player is dribbling. Just looked it up. The announcers barely mentioned it.

Change to the zone

At 9:40, when Sam came back in and the defense switched to a zone, UNM came apart. At that time, Sam had four fouls. Bairstow had four fouls. Queta had 3 fouls (soon to get his fourth). And UNM settled for 10 3-point shots - mostly with the lead. Most of those possessions never challenged the perime...

Giving up big leads

It seems that this season, more than I remember, has a lot of games where teams give up big leads. One of the early examples was the USU-LSU game. Maybe it is a function of the NCAA following the style of the NBA where such things have been happening for years. Pretty much every day there seems to b...

FWIW, Myrtle Beach has 1 team that would be a Quad 1 game (if played today) - Dayton. There would be 2 Quad 2 games - Loyola-Chicago, and Missouri. The others - Pitt(101), Charlotte, Nebraska and Penn would be Quad 3 games. So it's a decent field in that there are no apparent Quad 4 games (see NC A&...

Bid stealing

It’s popular at this time of year to talk about bid stealing and bubbles bursting. As I was thinking about it today I realized that there is pretty much a 1:1 relationship between stolen bids and burst bubbles. But it’s hard for me to list both teams for a given year. For example, in our snub year w...

At UNLV, Miller was 1-7. Rest of the team was 1-12. Vs BYU, Miller was 1-3. Rest of the team was 5-18. SDSU, Miller was 0-3. Rest of the team was 6-20. BSU, Miller was 0-3. Rest of the team was 6-25. Miller’s 2-16 over those games is dismal. But the rest of the team being 18-75 is very telling as we...

Two down. One to go.

Currently, 6 teams have a shot at second place. SDSU has a remaining game against 5 of them.

A win in Ft. Collins would be a major step for USU.

Our next three games are against teams that currently have 4 conference losses. USU has 5.

Each of those teams (as well as Nevada - also with 5 losses) have a remaining game against SDSU.

The Aggies control their own destiny for no worse than a tie for 2nd place. We shall see.

Shouldn't nit-pick after a win perhaps, but can we somehow get the AD to ban promotions during a timeout called by the other team in response to an Aggie run? Any complaint about Miller’s shot selection last night is a statement that Smith is not handling him correctly. Miller is not shooting independently of the coach.
