Got over another hump last night

A lot of people have mentioned getting over a hump last night. P5, athletic team, major comeback. All true. It also represents the first time in the 40 years that I have followed USU b-ball that the team has started 6-0. We have been 5-0 four times and 5-1 each of those seasons. When I looked at the...

Utah just lost by 22. Looked bad in the process.
I am pretty sure that the Net Ratings system is to blame. Kry knows that system in and out.

Future opponent discussion

I went to the Nevada board to check out their reaction to the Davidson debacle. While there I looked into the USC thread where I found the following quote: “ The bad: The guard play vs. length of any sort. Fortunately, we won't face many, if any, more teams that have the length Utah or USC had.” It ...

NC A&T

Although this is the first time that USU and NC A&T have met on the court, it is not the first time an NC A&T team has played in the Spectrum. That opportunity took place in the first round of the 1982 NCAA tournament games hosted by USU. After the worst season in school history, USU hosted 2 Round ...

Re: Common Opponents

I may regret these words later, but I can agree with the statement that BYU looked good if it is qualified with but they aren't nearly as good as they look like they should be. They have some good wings, but their inside presence is really bad without Childs. So bad that I am not sure that his retur...

Re: Student Section was good, not great

It would be very hard to find a November game of the past that had a better student section than last night. Comparing November games to best games of the past is apples and oranges. No November game in the past was a top crowd game over the last 10~20 years. And if you want ranked teams to fill the...

Re: Utah tops Miss. Valley St. by 94

I wonder if Utah will graduate a 4-year player during the rest of the current coach's tenure. They have an annual exodus and the team is mostly underclassmen as a result. Absolutely undocumented by me, but a friend told me that a longtime Ute fan associate of his claimed that last year 7 former Utes...

Focusing back on Bean, I noticed (on replay) that he came back into the game late in the first half and had three "and-ones" - making all the free throws - over the course of just over 3 minutes. Though it's hard to measure the impact, an "and-one" with a made FT is possibly better than a 3-pt shot ...

Defense

I just witnessed a defense that held the opposition to 23% from the field and 24% from the 3pt line. And they did it with the best defender in the MWC sitting on the bench. It wasn't a factor of Weber being cold at shooting - it was a factor of SO MANY times they would make a move to the basket and ...

Things that I liked about Dorius are unrelated to the level of competition are:
1) He catches the ball high and keeps it high
2) He has a good left hand shot for a right handed big man
3) He is mobile

Dorius had basket while fouled (can you call it an ‘and 1’ if he misses the FT?) where he rotated around for a soft lh bank shot. As he walked to the FT line I wondered if he was right or left handed. It was that smooth.

Maybe saving his eligibility is better for the long-term health of our program. :noidea: I had two thoughts on the situation: 1) Perhaps as a coach with integrity he was willing to follow the rules rather than "Work the system". 2) Exactly what Paco says here. Maybe the program needs Anthony more a...

Utah may be looking for a new head coach after this season. Larry makes 3.4 million per year which is about 5 times what Smith makes.
My worst nightmare.
Not quite mine. My worst nightmare would be a straight-up trade with Utah. Our HC for theirs.

Interesting that Nevada's only scoring drives came against the most rested first string and some well-rested backups. Maybe we should hope for shorter TOP rather than longer.

Small schedule advantage???

With the imbalance in the conference scheduling, each team skips one opponent at home and a different opponent on the road. Based on the preseason picks, the following holds true: Among the top four teams, each team has a possibility of six games (H-A against the other three). SDSU has to play all s...

Re: Ranking of MW Coaching Jobs

It is very subjective and therefore hard to measure, but I think it speaks a lot if coaches are willing to stay and retire at a school. In the MWC, in the last 10 years, I can only think of SDSU and USU as schools where coaches have retired. Either they are let go or they move up - the two common sc...

Halftime adjustments?

In the first half CSU has drives of 80 yards (TD), 42 yards (missed FG), and 25 yards (punt). They had two other TDs - an 18-yard field and a pick six. In the second half, they got a field goal on a 3 yard drive with a very short filed and essentially nothing after that. Their longest second half po...

So this year's center shot 64.7% AND had 6 assists. That is remarkable because it severely discourages the double team (especially if the kick-out leads to baskets). Throw in a 4-4 FT game and I have hope that the Hack-a-Queta strategy loses its benefits. Add in 2 fouls in 40 minutes and you have a ...
