Utah buys out 2014 game, BSU signs home & home

Post by treesap32 » April 6th, 2012, 9:24 am

Per twitter.

Utah paid $500,000 to buy out 2014 game. We signed a home & home with BSU.

Boise coming in on Sept 14, 2014 (Logan) and Sept 26, 2015 @ BSU.

Financially we made a heckuva move right there.... get 500K from the little girls in SLC and add a certain sell out to the schedule.

I would love to beat Boise.

Interesting that it was Kraig, of all people, that broke this. No mention of this on either utefans or broncocountry, the Idaho Statesman, or any media outlet in UT.

Personally, I would rather play Utah over Boise, but its understandable considering that the PAC 12 schools now play 10 conference games each season and the added pressure that commish Scott has placed on the schools with regards to the OOC games.

EDIT: I guess I should've checked the official site first... --http://www.utahstateaggies.com/sports/m ... 12aaa.html

Our release has the game in Logan on September 14, 2014 which is a Sunday. Boise says that it's September 27 which is a Saturday so I'd believe them.

Our official release is listing the Boise State home game as September 14, 2014 which is a Sunday. All other reports out of Idaho list the game as September 27 which is a Saturday.

Wait wait wait! I thought our deal with Utah was two games, one in Logan (this year) the next in SLC (13)? And then??? after that, what am I missing? And I'm liking the Boise game, that's a BE game in Logan, although I realize it's a watered down BE pretty much on par with the Alliance/MW (which we will be a member of by then), so... :joking:

We had a 4 year home and home with Utah. 2012 and 2014 in Logan with 2013 and 2015 in SLC. They bought out one of the Logan games but from the looks of it the 2015 game in SLC is still on. With them only being able to schedule 2 OOC games each year now they made it known that neither of those games will be road games. This will probably be the end up Utah playing us and byu.

What are the odds that they buy out the second game in Logan too so they only keep the 2 home games for them?

The first game in Logan is in 2012. They bought out the second game.

Looks like Boise will be coming to town Chuckie's senior year. Still sad we won't be playing the Utes any more. Can't wait for the game this year.

I don't know that this is such a good deal. Effectively Utah bought our game in SLC in 2015 for $500k where BCS schools are supposed to be paying $1million per game.

Won't it be great when we beat BSU on their home field in 2015! I can see it now, Top 25 teams meet on the smurf turf.

Won't we still get money for the road game in 2015?

Exactly. Utah gets off cheap. They pay us only $500k and our travel expenses for the one-and-done game in SLC are cheaper than any other DI team that they could get in a one-game situation. We could go to a Big 12 school and get double what Utah is paying us.

No. They're paying us 500k to cancel the game in logan. We still get paid more money for going to SLC in 2015. We're not losing any money on this at all.

Why would utah pay us to play them in 2015 (besides travel funds)? That game was part of the initial home and home agreement.

Don't BCS programs have to pay us 1 mil to go to their house? That's what i've always heard. Which means Utah pays us to go their in 2013, and 2015. And then boise pays us whenever we go there. And we get the additional 500k for Utah canceling our home game.

My initial impression is that it will end up looking like a twofer, with a 500k payout for for the extra home game.

I would think because the deal was struck before Utah was BCS that they weren't paying (much at least). So this allows us to get some cash from them and still schedule another BCS team that year. Seems like a financial win.

Not when it's a home-and-home arrangement.

Exactly. Nothing wrong with this. It wasn't our money game. In 2014, we'll still have a money game, Boise at home, and a half a million bonus for our trouble.

But we also added a road game that we need to balance out with another home game somehow. We replaced the 2014 home game against Utah with the home BSU game. The problem will be 2015, when we have Utah and BSU on the road. We presumably also have a road money game already scheduled in 2015. Even if we don't, the net result is adding one 2015 road game to the schedule and picking up $500K.

Essentially, we now have a home and home with Utah (2012 and 2013) and then a 500k road game @ Utah (2015).

Jack, I believe you are on to something here. Historically, Utah and Utah State have traveled to each others home fields for $50K or so, with the home team taking the balance of the gate. Certainly the numbers may have increased over time, but the visiting team takes a fixed guaranty, and the home team benefits from the remainder of the gate. I don't know how TV rights are distributed, if in fact they are.

I think it smells a lot like the BYU deal only we're getting $750K from the Y.

They have to pay an extra 250k because they're douches.

It's the "we're douches that nobody wants to associate with so we have to pay to fill out our schedule" Independence tax.

Interesting about the $750K for the Cougars in Provo. I understood the amount was much, much less. Is there a way the payout information could be referenced on this site? Thanks in advance.
