H. Sharp and kickoff duties

Post by paaron46 » October 13th, 2014, 9:41 am

I think we can all agree that Hunter Sharp is our best receiver. With Swindall down, he's really stepped up in a big, big way.

Which is why I think he needs to not be returning kickoffs. IMO, it seems like a big risk for a minimal gain with one of our best offensive threats. What does everyone else think?

Disagree. He is a bigtime playmaker and you want the ball in his hands as much as possible.

Wasn't that BYU's approach to Taysom Hill...? Granted, we're not a one-trick pony, so maybe you've got a point. But I still think it is a little more of a risk than it's worth. I'd rather see someone else take the kickoffs

It always makes me nervous to see our best players playing on KO returns.

I too disagree. Playmakers need to make plays. Limited number of opportunities in a game, take advantage of all of them.

Injuries are part of the game. You can't play scared or coach scared. If Sharp gives us the best chance to score and/or win the field position battle by returning kicks then let him do it.

True, but mitigating injury risk is also part of the game.

Since a whopping 67% (http://rinkstats.blogspot.com/2013/09/s ... -ever.html) of kick returns brought of the endzone don't ever even reach the 25 yard-line, there's not much upside to play with if Sharp receives kickoffs or if someone else does the duties. Perhaps you use Sharp when you know you're playing a team that has difficulty kicking it into the endzone. Otherwise take the touchback.

You need a someone who can hang on to the ball. If you fumble the kickoff it can be a game changer. If BYU had not been offsides on Williams muff it could have changed the outcome of the game. I have much more confidence that will hang on to it with sharp, and or hunt than when were we were earlier in the season.

I say let Jo Jo be the full-time kick-off and punt returner. I rather not use Sharp either for kick-off duties. Let's limit the risk for injury for him. I feel that Jo Jo is the perfect returner-he's elusive, quick, and he can be a game-changer.

The problem with JoJo returning kicks is that it requires explosive straight ahead speed, which JoJo does not have. There isn't much wiggle room on kick returns for a player to dance is way up field. However, JoJo's skill set is perfect for returning punts. He can field the punt, take a quick look and assess his options, and "make guys miss in a phone booth". Meaning he can use his elusiveness and quick feet to maneuver and create space for himself that other wise wouldn't have been there because there simply aren't as many opposing players coming at him at as high a rate of speed as there would be on a kick off.

JoJo has started to worry me with his ball security... please no more fumbles.

I have seen some close call unofficial fumbles, if I remember correctly.
