Questions about the defensive lineups from the bowl game
So we know Jalen Davis, Torrey Green, and Devin Centers were out. The defense still played really well though and I'm trying to make sense of what lineups were used exactly. I should've paid more attention and looked for it during the game, but I didn't.
Did USU use a 4-3 defense at all this game? Do I see right that Kamana-matagi didn't even play, does anyone know his status? I do see Moala, Seefeldt, Larsen, Nielsen, Taylor, and Taufa all played a fair amount of snaps on the D-line.
At LB it looks like Vigil, Vigil, Green (got injured), Baldomero, Okwonkwo, Williams and Togiai all played some snaps.
Then at the defensive back, that's where my confusion is. Was USU still in a nickel defense most of the time like most of the year even with Jalen Davis and Centers out? I see that Brian Suite, Rashard Stewart, Tyler Floyd, Frankie Sutera, Marwin Evans, Tyler Floyd, Bryant Hayes, Deshane Hines, and Kelvin Lee all played some snaps.
Given that many DB's played I'm guessing USU did play a lot of nickel. But who filled at the safety in place of Centers most of the time? And how was the performance from the other corners who haven't seen the field as much this season? Given potentially how the backup DB's played this game it gives me some hope going forward for next year.

Re: Questions about the defensive lineups from the bowl game
Swish, I've watched the game a few time so I'll tell you what I saw -- I did see #96 Matagi on the field a few times, I think all of Lee's snaps were on special teams, Green played until he got hurt in the 2nd Qtr., then alot more Okwondwo. No J. Davis (hurt), and limited Gray on special teams. CB's were mostly Stewart, Floyd, and Hines, with Hayes playing Centers position.swishh_15 wrote:So we know Jalen Davis, Torrey Green, and Devin Centers were out. Thanks for the information Blue. I noticed some names on the field that weren't routine for me to hear and I wondered, but haven't done any research as of yet. It will be interesting to get a seasons end "damage report" if that ever floats to the surface.

Matagi played quite a bit. We did use a 4-3 quite often. They would switch from 4-3 to nickel depending on UTEP's package. When they pulled a DT it was for a DB.

Yes...correction, I think so. I'll need to go double-check for sure.USUBlue wrote:Did you see Moala playGeoAg wrote:Matagi played quite a bit. We did use a 4-3 quite often. They would switch from 4-3 to nickel depending on UTEP's package. When they pulled a DT it was for a DB.

The reason I suggest Matagi didn't play is the box score that shows everyone who got in the game or recorded any stats doesn't show him playing in the game at all.

Re: Questions about the defensive lineups from the bowl game
The box score is often wrong -- a couple of times I saw them have #16 Keaton in the game, instead of #16 Williams (and often they list A. Williams as #1G or something like that. It's certainly not an exact science. But I did see Matagi in the game, despite the fact that neither he nor Moala were credited with any stats.

Yeah that's what I referenced and it doesn't show Matagi as having played.

Yes, I know and it's often wrong -- I'm sure it gets corrected later. It's those very stats that showed Chuckie playing after he was injuried instead of A. Williams for example. Don't always believe what you read. Do you actually believe that neither Matagi nor Moala were in on at least 1 assisted tackle all game.dyedblue wrote:This shows who officially played in the game. http://www.utahstateaggies.com/sports/m ... l#GAME.PRE

I wasn't talking about this game with UTEP, I was just using that as an example for a prior game when A. Williams first started playing.BustaMcNutt wrote:A Williams was sick and didn't play.

And I was answering the original poster's question. Just trying to answer his question as to who played.USUBlue wrote:I wasn't talking about this game with UTEP, I was just using that as an example for a prior game when A.
