Sit back and pop some popcorn
So, if Whitt ends up at byu, does the fallout ultimately hurt USU? I hope not, but I can see it happening.
It would help byu, which is horrible, but I would lose it if the fallout ultimately ended with us losing Wells or something.

Re: Sit back and pop some popcorn
First, I'm not sure how much Whitt is an upgrade to BYU. You replace an odd coach with a reputation for great defenses with another coach who brings the same skill set and struggles even more with managing the offensive side of the game. Add a lot of water under the bridge and a whole different attitude toward the honor code and football than when Whit was there and the extra money to retain him and perhaps buy out Utah doesn't seem worth it.3rdGenAggie wrote:So, if Whitt ends up at byu, does the fallout ultimately hurt USU? Second, the mere logistics of GA leaving Oregon State for an in conference rival while under contract and having stolen the Utes top assistant who apparently signed a six year contract may be more expensive and messy than its worth.
Third, we lose Matt next year anyway unless the season is a total dud. I personally hope that it happens while Orlando is available and he is promoted while keeping the rest of the defensive staff intact. To me continuity with the Defense and Polynesian assistants is critical to moving this thing forward.

Sorry, I know this is crazy, but this worst case scenario has been on my mind.
1) Whitt to BYU
2) Utah fires Hill
3) Utah hires Barnes
4) GA and Company to Utah
5) Wells and staff to OSU
6) When the music stops Rosco is without a chair*

Seriously stranger things have happened but Utah is not firing Hill and as badly as Andersen may want it, I'm not sure Utah would take on that kind of mess with buyouts including Sitake exc. so that Gary can decide that he really loves Southern California in a couple of years.
Finally, why in the hell would Whit want to go to BYU. If he couldn't get along with Hill how is he going to deal with the Dog and Pony show that Roscoe had to put on? BYU's program is a different animal than when he played for Edwards when the HC and admissions offices played last fiddle to the football program and certain directors weren't worried about the positive press of gang rapes and brawls.
Whit should dig in his heels, make Utah fire him and live good for a year or two on his contract doing TV analysis and whatever Urban Meyer said he was going to do with his family.

Hans, Gordon Monson, Kevin Graham, and now Spence Checketts
@1280Spence: Kyle Whittingham has yet to inform assistant coaches of official plans to leave, but has said/done enough to indicate he's gone. Stay tuned.
I cannot believe what is happening on the hill.

Re: Sit back and pop some popcorn
Unless things have changed between Andersen and Whitt, I can't see Andersen taking the Utah job. Andersen declined a previous job and all but quit college coaching once before because he felt Whitt wasn't treated right by Idaho State. If he did that then, and operates with any consistency, why would he take the Utah job where Whitt and other coaches are not being treated right?
I'm guessing that the reason Andersen choose to take the OSU job instead of waiting to see what happened at Utah is because he was told of what was happening with Dr. Hill and the coaching staff at Utah and Andersen decided that even if Whitt took a better job, Utah was not the place it once was.

Re: Sit back and pop some popcorn
I too think Andersen is not going anywhere as he is on thin ice as it is. Moving to Utah now would be complete character suicide. That being said if GA is flashed a wad of cash he'd move in a heartbeat. We have seen with both Wisconsin and Oregon State that a huge wad isn't even needed just a little more than he has now.

Re: Sit back and pop some popcorn
Andersen was paid quite a bit more to go to Wisconsin. The OSU move does not seem to be a financial move at all. I do agree that the timing for Andersen to move to Utah is terrible, and if Whittingham is being forced out, and the Utes approach Andersen... I think Gary is really going to put a lot of weight on Whittingham's opinion.
If Utah wants Andersen they should give Whittingham another year. Gary is putting together a sound coaching staff at Oregon State. If he does move to Utah... what will his staff look like. Sitake wont go back. Arranda will not move from Wisconsin for Utah. Maybe he'll get Todd Orlando- although I am unaware that they have worked together or have any connection.
What about the OC... Wells isn't going to be downgraded, maybe he can sway Baldwin or McGiven to join him in Utah..
Or he could bring in an unfamiliar staff... at the end of the day. Utah missed their chance for Andersen, and Andersen will be in Corvallis next year.
I talked to a few Ute fans that think they'll get Mullen. They are insane, if Mullen wouldn't go to Florida no way he goes to Utah. Utah's best chance is to go after a coordinator like Scott Frost.

Andersen got good money to go to Wisconsin but far less than the going rate.

They wouldn't have released anything unless the current craziness was over. New craziness could come up, but they've moved on from this one, I would think.

Re: Sit back and pop some popcorn
I have no idea how USU can compete in this arms race. As a G-5 school the only way of protecting your coaches is for them to have a poor to mediocre year (see BYU football) so that no one wants them. I don't know where it ends unless its FCS-land.ChowderAggie wrote:So now coordinators at Utah are making more than our head coach?
