Roll Tide - Playing @ Bama in 2022

Post by FormerlyVegasAggie71 » May 2nd, 2018, 10:11 am

Hope Saban has retired by then, maybe we will only lose by 28 if so. At least we are getting paid!

Love it. I like one of these games every year. Usually not winnable, but every once in a while we may snatch one (Damn you Wisconsin). But we will always get paid a good amount to play against a top team.

USU @ Wisconsin 2012. Simply Non-Winnable.
USU @ Auburn 2011. Simply Non-Winnable.
USU @ Oklahoma 2010. Simply Non-Winnable.
USU @ aTm 2008. Simply Non-Winnable.

USU @ Bama 2022. Who is our coach going to be, then we'll know better.

Oh, I'd like to agree with you, but Alabama year after year is not Wisconsin, Auburn, Oklahoma, and A&M.

I would trade a 5% chance of winning at Wisconsin and getting paid $1 million (or whatever it is) for a .5% chance of winning at Bama for $1.9 million.

Not a fan of a game like that every year but an occasional game like that for that price is fine with me.

I understand, but prostituting a program for the money is a dangerous path. I think it was John L and Chucky that talked about the dangers of playing $$$ games. Winning motivates the base, not an AD's budget needs IMO.

I attended the game the last time USU played at Alabama. For those that enjoy the pageantry and tradition of college football, I would highly recommend making the trip for this one. Alabama fans were very gracious and interested in who USU was as a school and very eager to talk football, or national parks, or whatever. I can't tell you how many tailgates our group got invited to as we passed by wearing USU gear. Very friendly people and a great atmosphere. Definitely worth the trip. Dreamland BBQ, Bear Bryant museum on campus, sorority row, - a great time.

I’m in the camp that wishes this game wasn’t scheduled. I want winnable P5 games (Oregon State hehe).

BUT, I’m sure some recruits/players will love the chance to play against Bama.

I get USU needs the revenue, but this shows money is more important than winning. I would rather get rid of the annual FCS game and the body bag game for a home and away vs a couple G5 teams. However, budget realities tend to make the money game a necessity and a FCS game balances the schedule for six home games.

With such a high pay day, I am concerned that this game is going to be played later in the season. Playing these games is one thing, but I hate the idea of playing Alabama in November.

Then again, I don't have $2 million so I better stop complaining and be glad the bills are being paid. :disappointed:

If USU is going to play one money game every year, I’m fine with that and I am happy to see it being shopped for the highest possible payday. I will expect a loss, regardless of whether the road money game is against, say, Alabama or Kentucky. By the time USU plays at Alabama, they (very likely) will have lost about 75 consecutive road games that didn’t have a return game in Logan over a 50+ year period. That includes games against Alabama, Oklahoma, Nebraska, etc., but it also includes money games at schools like Illinois, Iowa State, Kansas, Arizona, Utah, Boise State and Fresno State. It doesn’t matter who the opponent is, the Aggies always lose all of those games. I don’t expect that to change.

I’m all in favor of playing teams like Oregon State or Minnesota. But those should be home and home, and I think there will be plenty of those in the coming decade or two, like the Washington State games that are already on the schedule.

I don’t want to see USU schedule lower tier P5 schools for road money games. It has been tried a lot over the past 50 years and USU hasn’t won even one of them.

By 2022, Saban retires and Alabama has hired Lane Kiffin to run the program into the ground, just in time for the Aggies to sweep in and get a win :joking:

Certain: $1,910,000

Uncertain: The quality of football teams at Utah State and Alabama in the year 2022.

I love these games and I hope that we pursue recruits who would rather play Alabama than Tennessee Tech. I'm pleased to see that we jumped on the 3rd highest payout ever to a visiting NCAA football team.

Bama always plays a gimme home game the week before Auburn. Generally, it is an FCS team. Having said that, I really hope we get a September game and aren't taking the place of a pre-Auburn FCS team.

I plan on attending this one as well.

Only a little bit of hyperbole here :) . I don't love scheduling a game with Bama, but with where we are budget wise, you can't turn your back on the cash. Alabama is the preeminent college football program in the country, but the end result will be the same: a large margin loss to a P5 school on the road, but for much more cash than our typical body bag games.

This will also give me an excuse to take a roadie and see a game in Tuscaloosa.

We've tried that - multiple times. Doesn't matter - the result is the same. This one pays better, though.

2002 Nebraska (finished the year 7-7)
2003 Arizona State (finished the year 5-7)
2004 Alabama (finished the year 6-6)
2006 Arkansas (finished the year 10-4)
2009 Texas A&M (finished the year 6-7)
2011 Auburn (finished the year 8-5)
2012 Wisconsin (finished the year 8-6)
2014 Tennessee (finished the year 7-6)
2015 Washington (finished the year 7-6)

I could only retrieve data back to 2002 on the ESPN site and don't want to go back any further. There have been games against Texas Tech, Iowa State, etc. in the years preceding 2002.

Looking at the final records of the P-5 teams that USU has played over the years, I would say USU has had pretty good luck catching these teams from the power conferences in "down" years. There have been exceptions of course (like Wisconsin last year), but for the most part the Aggies have scheduled these games in years when those games were somewhat "winnable". The problem is - the Aggies didn't win them. So I see no difference in scheduling the mid-level P-5 teams or the winningest team and coach in college football history -- the result is the same. May as well go and enjoy a great atmosphere in an historic venue. The players will have something to tell their kids about, too.

So you'd turn down an extra $400-500K so that we can lose to LSU or Michigan by 4 touchdowns instead of losing to Alabama by 5 touchdowns? Or do you think Hartwell turned down similar payouts from lesser schools?

My concern is the reason the fan base can't fill a 25,000 seat stadium is in part due to early losses and injuries because of body bag games scheduled to balance the budget. I think 4+ touchdown losses to Wisconsin, USC, and Tennessee did more to kill any momentum than was built by close losses and going to bowl games. Like I said earlier, I understand it, but I would prefer USU move away from the scheduling an early season loss against the blue bloods.

TCU, Utah, and Boise State didn't schedule body bag games before they were BCS busters. The formula for USU football to get to a bowl game was created by GA when USU started scheduling FCS teams to get to six home games. The next step is to stop scheduling these games.

Sure, if your only goal is wins/losses.

I would rather lose by 10-21 points with a chance to win like we almost pulled off against Auburn, A&M, Oklahoma and USC rather than lose 80-0 against Alabama.

I would prefer the great atmosphere at Ole Miss or Nebraska.

How about we play a money game against a team that hasn’t won the last 10 national championships in a row against maybe the best coach in the history of college football ?

So you'd turn down an extra $400-500K so that we can lose to LSU or Michigan by 4 touchdowns instead of losing to Alabama by 5 touchdowns? Or do you think Hartwell turned down similar payouts from lesser schools?
LSU lost to Troy at home last year, so to answer your question, yes. I would rather play annual underachievers than Bama.

The difference between LSU/Michigan is more than a touchdown.

BREAKING: Fanbase That Can't Fill 25,000 Seat Stadium Consistently Is Upset that Football Team Has to Schedule Body Bag Game to Balance Budget

Unless you have 1 and a half mil to donate to the program for a few years to test your hypothesis, this is the only way to keep our football program afloat.

If we have to play these money games, I like that we are getting to go to big college landmarks like Madison, the Colosseum, and Tuscaloosa. This is a great game to schedule!
