Ags in the NFL: A contest

Post by OKAggie » July 30th, 2018, 11:11 am

As NFL camps open and football season is only a month away, I'm creating an Ags in the NFL contest.

As of today there are 16 former USU players under contract with an NFL team (list below). The contest is to guess which ones will be in the NFL when the season begins. Guess which players will be on the final 53-man roster on September 1, or on practice squads or injured/suspended/PUP lists before the first game of the season on September 6. The OKAggie Foundation (me) will make a $50 donation to the Big Blue Scholarship Fund or the Merlin Olsen Fund in the name of the winner.

Here's the hook: You rank the 16 players 16-1, most to least likely to stick in the NFL. For each player that is on the final 53-man roster, you get 2 points x the numeric ranking; for each player that is on the Week One practice squad, physically unable to perform, injured reserve or suspended list, you get 1 point times the numeric ranking. Players don't have to stick with the team they're currently under contract with -- if traded, or waived and picked up, they count if they stick with someone.

For example: if you think Bobby Wagner is the most likely to make the team (giving him a point value of 16) and he is on the final 53-man roster, you get 32 points. If you rank Jalen Davis least likely (giving him a point value of 1) and he makes the Week One practice squad, you get 1 point.

Mo Alexander/Seahawks
Jalen Davis/Dolphins
Marwin Evans/Packers
Kyler Fackrell/Packers
Tyler Larsen/Panthers
Nevin Lawson/Lions
Dallin Leavitt /Raiders
Devante Mays/Packers
Donald Penn/Raiders
Patrick Scales/Bears
Hunter Sharp/Giants
Robert Turbin/Colts
Nick Vigil/Bengals
Zach Vigil/Redskins
Bobby Wagner/Seahawks
Kerwynn Williams/Chiefs

Entries are due August 9 and can be made (or modified up to August 9) by entering your choices on this Google sheet. After the entry deadline, all entries will be cell-protected.

Based on his explanation, I think you want to flip your list. He said that having Bobby Wagner as 16 would give 32 points if he makes a roster. As it stands, you would get 2 points if Bobby Wagner makes the roster.

It's closed - thanks for playing. Some factoids:

At least one of the 20 entrants chose every player but Leavitt as 10 or higher. Leavitt is clearly seen as the longest shot -- nobody chose him higher than 3.

Average rankings:

Wagner 16
N Vigil 14
Penn 13.7
Lawson 13.3
Fackrell 11.5
Scales 10.5
Turbin 8.2
Evans 7.8
Larsen 7.7
Williams 7.6
Z Vigil 6.4
Alexander 6.1
Sharp 5.1
Davis 3.8
Mays 3.4
Leavitt 1.3

Consensus:
Everyone picked Wagner 16, no-brainer
Everyone picked Leavitt 1-3
Everyone picked Penn and Lawson 12-15
Only Leavitt, Mays and Sharp were picked 1

Divergence:
Larsen was picked 15 by Floppy Hat, 2 by providence alum
Scales was picked 14 by bigblue, 2 by sambonethegreat
Turbin was picked 14 by dhilk3785, 3 by jsharvey
Sharp was picked 12 by Aggieuprising50, 1 by Floppy Hat

There you go. The sheet can now be viewed but not edited. Let the games begin!

What would have been better (in retrospect) is a "decision lens" type system that allowed us to rank the probability that any of them would make a roster. There are about 10 100% on a roster (Wagner, N. Vigil, Penn, Lawson, Fackrell, Turbin, Larsen
Williams, Z Vigil, and Scales) 4 pretty likely on a roster (Alexander, Evans, Mays and Sharp) and two long shots (Davis and Leavitt). I consider Dallin Leavitt a very long shot to make the Raiders, while the Dolphins really seem to like Jalen Davis. I hope all 16 make it.

https://www.thephinsider.com/2018/8/13/ ... 2-released

If he keeps that spot Jalen is going to make it as the 5/6 corner/Slot DB. Pretty much all the teams keep six corner/DB players and many keep 7 and only go with 3 pure safeties. Depends on what kind of hybrid/slot skills the 3rd team safeties have I guess but he looks to be in good shape.

16 Bobby Wagner
15 Patrick Scales
14 Nevin Lawson
13 Marwin Evans
12 Nick Vigil
11 Donald Penn
10 Robert Turbin
9 Kyler Fackrell
8 Tyler Larsen
7 Hunter Sharp
6 Jalen Davis
5 Maurice Alexander
4 Zach Vigil
3 Kerwynn Williams
2 Devante Mays
1 Dallin Leavitt

I think absent something major the first 10 are solid. The other 6 at least half make it. Only Leavitt is a real longshot. Mo is lower because of the safety competition he faces but Carroll likes him. Vigil probably will get the last ILB spot because of his special teams value. Davis is on track. Williams is a bubble guy right now and is out with a concussion. Mays needs to get healthy and perform but Aaron Jones suspension may get him an opening day spot.

I have to think that Mays' performance in his opportunities last year have to be in the back of peoples' minds. One yard on 4 carries and 2 fumbles isn't going to get you the benefit of the doubt when fighting for roster spots.

As a dedicated Packer fan I can tell you Williams is not on the bubble-- he is definitely in the rotation as one of the 3 running backs (with Aaron Jones and Ty Montgomery) they will use heavily this year. They also like Mays-- he contributes well on Special Teams and he provides them a faster big back option than Joe Kerridge, one of two fullbacks on their roster. Devante's big issue last year was fumbling. They gave him a chance in game 9 to show his stuff and he fumbled the rock two out of the four times he carried it. After that it was special teams or blocking, but he rarely if ever carried the ball again.

They are also considering moving Montgomery full-time back to WR, and what works for Mays if that happens is he's a 230 pounder who runs a 4.45 40. Won't ever get that out of Kerridge, which is why I think Mays will claim the last roster spot with the Packers.

Dallin Leavitt Played punt and KO coverage teams and the whole second half of the Raiders game at safety. Nothing he did was stand out but I thought he was solid in his coverage (zone). And, when he was there to make the tackle he took the guy down quickly with a solid hit after maybe a yard gain. Not sure how the coaches will grade him. The Lions busted a 60 yard running play and it looked like Leavitt might have over pursued and taken himself out of the play. No way to tell what his responsibility was on that defensive call. It looked like a blitz, If it was, he's clear. If not he could be to blame.

Didn't see Nevin involved. The starters played only a series or 2

Tyler Lawson signed a 2-year contract extension last week with the Panthers. I would say that gives him a pretty good chance of making the opening day roster.

Per this projection from ESPN's (ingest grain of salt now) NFL Nation beat reporters, most of the 17 Ags in NFL camps are expected to make their team's 53-man roster. Only Ali'ifua, Davis, Evans, Leavitt and Williams are predicted to be left off (Turbin will start the season on the suspended list).

Levitt forced a fumble on Kickoff coverage in last weeks game. Unfortunately the ball went out of bounds. He continues to look good in zone but looked overmatched when they got him one on one even though he defended the passes thrown at him. I expect him to get a lot of playing time Thursday night in the final preseason game. Hope he has a great game. Raiders are likely to move a veteran DB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie back to safety for depth. Levitt outlasted a 2nd or 3rd round safety the raiders picked last season. Even though he looked good and exceeded my expectations, I don't think he'll stick. Maybe he'll get a shot elsewhere. Picked up on another teams practice squad.

5 Cut, 11 on rosters. I noticed A LOT of former UofU players were cut and several zoobs.

Surprised that Mo didn't make it. Word is they may pick him back up after the season starts.

Mays was immediately put on the injured list due to his hamstring not responding. The Packers cut Aaron Ripkowski, their primary fullback, so I think they're keeping the 230 pound Mays around for some heavy lifting, once his leg heals. They only have two running backs on their active roster, Jamaal Williams and Ty Montgomery. The other back, Aaron Jones, is suspended for up to 4 games.

The Packers also cut Marwin Evans, but there is a belief they will sign him back to their practice squad.

Looks like Jalen Davis was signed to the Dolphins practice squad. Hunter Sharp was unfortunately waived when the Giants claimed the rest of the NFL off waivers.

It’s a big deal that Vigil made it based on the way preseason went for him. Lots of people thought Martell Spaight would take Vigil’s spot. Those people forget how huge Vigil was for the skins last season.

For those who were unaware- the Redskins linebacking core was decimated by injury last year. Vigil was originally cut, went to Buffalo (I think on the practice squad) was cut and came in after all those injuries and started after being out of football for a few weeks. I’m impressed with Zack for that. Lots of guys may have called it quits but Zack kept grinding and it paid off.

I think it was a case of Zack not needing to prove himself to Gruden and that’s why he didn’t play much and why people thought it was Speight’s spot.

This “may” mean he isn’t a journeyman. God bless the 3-4 for getting Zack a spot. One of my favorite Aggies and Redskins of all time.

Vigil played quite a bit in the pre-season, just not the last game. All of the starters sat that game (as is the norm). I was slightly worried he wouldn't make it, but after watching him start several games last year and play well, I was expecting him to make the squad. Zach's first start for the Skins was the Thanksgiving game. I was in attendance on the 5th row.
