The Last Time We Played in Michigan

Post by Floppy Hat » August 28th, 2018, 12:47 am

November 11, 1961

The Aggies traveled to face Western Michigan and emerged victorious by a score of 65 to 22.

Five Things:
- Our offense that year was led by Tom Larscheid Sr., as he was our leading rusher, receiver, punt returner, and kickoff returner. He scored 15 touchdowns that year and three two point conversions.
- The 1961 still holds the record for the highest average points scored for an Aggie team at 38.7 ppg.
- The defense was also extremely stout as 1961 was one of the years Merlin Olsen was named an All-American.
- That 1961 defense holds the record for the lowest average rushing, receiving, and total yards allowed by an Aggie team.
- We played in the Gotham Bowl that year against Baylor and unfortunately lost 24-9, but still finished ranked 10th in the AP poll.

Big Bad John by Jimmy Dean was the number one song on the Billboard chart that week:

It is possible, that I missed another game we had in Michigan over the years, so feel free to point that out.

How was that song ever #1? I've always hated that song because random people would sing that to me when I was growing up (my name being John). :x

Yes, the Gotham Bowl was a very poorly played game by Utah State. We had 8 turnovers in that game, a game we should have won going away. It is rumored the team did some sort of partying the night before the game, which if the story is accurate, explains why a team as strong as the 1961 AGGIE team performed so miserably the next day.
