If Hill is the target new coach

Post by USUaggie » December 5th, 2018, 4:55 pm

and Weber wins Friday, what happens? The championship game is January 5th. I'm sure we will want him to accept immediately, but allow him to continue to coach for another 4 weeks. What if Weber refuses to let him continue to coach if he accepts our offer? Would he turn us down? If he is not willing to accept this weekend do we move on?

Are we confident that if he accepts and wears both hats, that he could do all that is needed for the Aggies during that time, i.e. recruiting and putting together the new staff?

I assume there would be enough time for both especially if he hires Frank and brings most of his staff with him.

This is a challenging situation. I like Hill a lot and would be happy to have him as our next coach. He knows how to recruit to be successful in Utah, has great assistants, and seems to have similar values as those established in the USU football program.
However, how often does a coach get a chance at a national title? I want him to play until Weber loses or raises the trophy. At the same time I really want our coach in place before the early signing period begins on 12/19 to secure some of these new recruits. Those two things are in conflict.
At the same time, I think hiring the best coach is more important than a handful of recruits. There could be other coaches that would also be great that could meet the 12/19 date.

It's going to be interesting to see how things unfold.

that's a lot of "if's" - listen, "if" Jay Hill applied for the job and is offered the job, then he'll take the job when we offer it to him!

Yeah, all I have is questions. No answers.

For reference, Wyoming hired Bohl in December and he started in January after the FCS championship game, so there is precedent.

Yes but Bohl had to do a complete rebuild at Wyoming and didn’t have the program’s best recruiting class in history teetering on the edge.

I do think you let Hill coach through the end of Weber’s playoffs but require him to also do a little USU recruiting. At least reach out to the recruits and establish Maile and Collins as key staff members.

Last year was the first early signing period. Bohl was hired much earlier than the earliest recruits could sign. That could be a game changer.

If Hill wants to move on, he needs to be willing to leave before the playoffs end, or hope he gets hired after a less than stellar season. Very few FBS programs are going to be willing to wait until January to get a new coach, and most will probably be unwilling to wait indefinitely as the FCS playoffs progress.

Dead on! I'm not saying Hill is the guy but there is a way this could happen. There are only TWO weekends left in the current recruiting period. From what I've been told, Frank and Stacy Collins have managed to keep the commitments of all our current recruiting targets. If Hill were hired and in turn hired Frank, Stacy, Uani Unga, Waqa Damuni and Jason Shumaker our recruiting class would be saved. The recruiting dead period begins December 17 and runs through January 10th. That would give Jay Hill enough time to get a staff together and still finish competing in his FCS run for a title.

The greed of the system requires any coach to choose ambition over loyalty or commitment. If he's offered the job and has any ambition...he'll know just what to do.
Hint: It won't be staying behind with his loyal student-athletes who suffered long-term brain damage and lifelong chronic joint pain to springboard him to his promotion.

But Weber state is a special place.

All hill and his assistants would really need to do is some PR with the recruits to say he’s all in, and sell them.

Having a coach a coach that recruits will trust is what is important- in my opinion

Secondly continuing to find new recruits at the JC level, etc..

A lot of the other stuff can wait a week.

If Hill is the choice who are his coordinators? He can’t just bring guys with him from WSU can he... it’s one thing for an FCS head coach to make the jump but coordinators too. Does he have the connections to get a good staff?

Yep, the staffs mind must be somewhere else, maybe be another opportunity.

Very unprofessional if true. Hopefully that other opportunity is not in Logan.

Hill must be gone. I know for a fact the only reason USU had close games to finish the year was because Matt Wells spent the entire time in Lubbock with his coordinators. We always destroy Boise and CSU on the road. No other explanation.
