OMG Pete.. So he's got the Scoop now, the big breaking story? This will really boost his career if his guess is right.

If this is true, that boosters stepped in and forced our AD to hire someone, we deserve to have things fall to crap. Oh, and we should fire the AD and leave the position vacant - our boosters can do the job.

I wish I had enough money to not only tell someone else how to do their job, but do it for them.

There’s only one USU booster who’s got enough clout to make that kind of move.

I totally agree, we can't be patient enough to let our AD do his job? He is a smart guy and would make a great hire. If this is true then shame on the boosters.

His name is Jim Laub. You can thank him for almost all football facilities.

Yeah, I have a hard time believing Laub would "force" Hartwell to hire someone. So maybe the tweet is a mis-characterization of what happened. I dunno. I hope it didn't go down that way.

I agree, that doesn’t sound like something Jim would do, and I can’t really think of any other booster or even group of boosters that could force Hartwells hand like that.

Seriously though, it's no secret Jim Laub and other big boosters all wanted Gary. Gary made his pitch first thing and then Hartwell went off and has been interviewing people. No real traction was made with anyone and this was starting to drag on for too long. Heck we have real difference maker recruits on campus this week with no idea who their coach would be.

Gary got frustrated at the process and lack of movement one way or another and so he withdrew today. I believe that's when Laub and whoever else stepped in and said enough is enough let's hire Gary.

That's the pieces I've tried to put together through this process. It adds up to me.

Exactly, I believe that all parties believe in this hire. I think these men are smart enough to do what is best.
Hope we get a good staff, the names thrown around sound pretty darn good!

I hope it’s just a case of my native latent Aggie pessimism kicking in because I really do like Gary Andersen and I’ve wanted him to be successful everywhere he’s been, but I can’t shake the feeling that this is not going to end well. Here’s hoping I’m dead wrong...

Totally okay with hiring Gary in the abstract, not okay with the reports I’ve heard this week on the board and confirmation now by the media that this was “messy” and donor driven. If true, that’s terrible. Hartwell should have been allowed to do his job.

"We deserve to have things fall to crap" and "shame on the boosters"??! The boosters are the ONLY reason this program is where it is. What have you done? The boosters look out for the best interest of the Aggies through thick and thin and will continue to do so. Our AD is a smart man and did his job. Gary coming back was a no brainer.

I'm really hoping it's Gary. Any coach is a crap shoot, just like any recruit. Win or lose I loved Gary's passion and charisma. I think USU has some very good boosters if this story is to be believed.

A booster is a fan with money. Fans should not be making decisions like this. That's a very bad precedent and path for USU to step upon.

Stories of this being a mess and boosters making the call are not correct.
It went smoothly from what I heard. At no point did any of my sources say anything was a mess

Not Gary tell of the AD
Not Gary withdrawing his name
Not boosters making calls
None of that is ant where near what I have heard.

And to be clear the history department was very well taught on this matter.

That's why I said if the report is true that our boosters have pressured this hire rather than let our AD do his job. I don't mind Gary being the choice but it is not a good look if it was done because the boosters stepped in and decided for Hartwell. I think the boosters may "think" they look out for the best interest of Aggies, but letting the AD finish his process IMO would be in the best interest of Aggies.

My argument is based on the assumption that the boosters stepped in and took over like some of the media has reported. If their reports are false then great.

An absurdly wealthy donor who used to regularly post here then disappears without a trace for a long time and then just randomly shows up today of all days and it is just a coincidence?

I don't have a problem with GA being the coach again!!!! I'm sure everybody did the right thing. All I know is that when Gary was last here the players would do anything for him and that is why they did so well!! And I expect the players will do it again. So please let's all get behind this as Aggie nation and let the fun begin!!!

I hope not as well, that would be a bad omen. It's always best to come to an agreement where everyone is on the same page, hopefully everyone is comfortable with whatever is being decided.

Re: Pete Thamel from Yahoo Saying Interview Process Shutting Down

I have to admit, if Hartwell’s hand is being forced here, then I have a lot of uneasiness about the hire. I think one of Hartwell’s greatest assets would have been the fact that he would approach this hire with more objectivity than someone who was here during Gary’s run. That would have been a great strength.

Having said that, I hope for nothing for the best and I am on board with whomever is ultimately hired.

I was with one of the bigger boosters earlier this week. This is an individual who knows both Matt and Gary very well and has already been invited by Matt to attend to games at TT. Their families do things socially and have become good friends. He told me two things that I found significant.

1) Wells was open to new jobs and expected offers to come but was not contacted by TT until after the Boise game. It happened very fast and part of the reason it that it is a part of the country that Matt knows well and likes. Lubbock is a good spot for him. They were surprised how fast it happened and how fast things came together.

2) There was a clash between Gary and JH at the first of the process. Gary felt that he was a known quantity and should not have to go through the formalities. Hartwell was doing all he could to be thorough and explore all options and felt Gary should go through the same vetting everyone else did (which I completely agree with, especially after the OSU meltdown). The biggest concern the booster described was that the ego of both could get in the way of a good relationship.

Hope it works. I wonder a lot about where GA is mentally and emotionally. I recall when he worked himself to exhaustion round 1 when he was here and it seems he was in a bad way during his time at OSU. I get why Hartwell wanted to look around.
