Mike Sanford Jr. as OC
As predicted. This is a great hire!
Boise state has won 12 games once with Bryan Harsin as head coach. That one time was when Mike Sanford jr was his OC. They beat Arizona in the Fiesta Bowl that year.

Gary is off to a very good start. This makes the TJ hire make more sense. TJ and Sanford worked together at WKU.

Re: And our new OC is....
If Gary made mistakes hiring assistants at OSU, and I do believe he did, It certainly appears he has learned, moved on, and is making up for it now. I love this hire. I also believe this shows an increased commitment by either the administration, boosters, or both, to increase assistant pay as I'm sure Sanford had plenty of other options.

The highest paid assistant coaches in the Mountain West made about $350,000 last year. I'll be interested to see what Ena and Sanford are getting paid.tetonaggie wrote: ↑December 14th, 2018, 12:24 pmIf Gary made mistakes hiring assistants at OSU, and I do believe he did, It certainly appears he has learned, moved on, and is making up for it now. he's not a true junior, since he doesn't share the same middle name as his father.

Re: Mike Sanford Jr. as OC
So he was just fired as coach of WKU. Is this another case of good coordinator but bad coach?

Re: And our new OC is....
Sanford had two years left on his contract at Western Kentucky. I assume he will have a minimal contract with us and theUSUBlue wrote: ↑December 14th, 2018, 12:34 pmThe highest paid assistant coaches in the Mountain West made about $350,000 last year. Re: And our new OC is....
This is a really good hire. In fact, Gary is putting together a terrific staff.
Three years ago when Kyle was looking to replace Aaron R, I wanted Utah to go after Sanford. Stanford was doing a terrific job at BSU. He should do an equally great job with the USU O.

I like the hire.
Curious why he went from Boise State to Western Kentucky...not a lateral move and certainly not a step up. Wonder if he and Harslin butted heads?

BSU and then ND as an OC... and then we get him. Sweet I’m officially excited. GA is off to a fantastic start! I honestly feel a little giddy.

Wow. One of my biggest concerns about hiring Andersen was whether he would be able to hire good assistants. He seems to be putting those concerns to rest. Getting more excited.....

Re: And our new OC is....
I don't know why this was a concern. Gary himself admitted his downfall at Oregon State was largely the assistants he hired. He wasn't going to make that mistake again and that's one area he was going to focus on getting right. Gary isn't stupid.bluegrouse wrote: ↑December 14th, 2018, 1:13 pmWow. And of course people would still go work for him again. USU right now is a great place for any assistant looking to go to further his career.

Re: And our new OC is....
Even if you missed the middle step it doesn't change. It still would've made sense to go from an OC at Boise State to the Head Coach at Western Kentucky.FloridaAggie13 wrote: ↑December 14th, 2018, 1:03 pmAh, that's right...I forgot the middle step. Notre Dame is playing is undefeated and playing in the playoff right now. Who do you think recruited a large chunk of their starting offense right now?
That's right, Mike Sanford from 2015-2016.

Re: And our new OC is....
Between Anderson and Sanford we have two head coaches with the near worst won loss record (combined) for the last two years. Both appear to be given a pass for their recent coaching records? I hope this proves to be more than wishful thinking.

Re: Mike Sanford Jr. as OC
Who knows. Could be a combination of any one or more of the following:
- He's better suited as OC than HC.
- He hired poorly.
- WKU has other issues.
- He didn't have a recruiting formula or connections for success at WKU.
- Something I can't think of right now

It is something to be concerned about but any OC we hire would have something to be concerned about. Go ask Boise State fans how they feel about Mike Sanford as an OC.
