Best Running Back Ever at USU?
Best Running Back Ever at USU?
I was listening to the late night sports talk show on 1160 last night, and they were discussing who the best running back ever at the U was. This got me thinking a little bit about some of the great running backs we have had at USU over the years, and also made me wonder, who has been our best running back ever? Some of the arguments that they were making on the radio show were, did they help their team achieve great things, like win championships, or BCS bowls, or should that even be considered? We have had some great running backs that have helped USU rise from the ashes over the past few years and helped the team achieve great things such as Turbin, Williams, and now Thompson. However, there were also some great running backs at Utah State during the dark years, Emmett White Comes to mind.
I'm just curious, if you could pick the best running back ever at Utah State, who would you pick?

Re: Best Running Back Ever at USU?
The best I've seen? Demario Brown. Dude could do it all. Run, catch out of the backfield and pass block. Emmett would be right there as well. He was just as versatile as Brown and could return punts and kicks as well. Brown probably could have done the special teams thing but we had Steve Smith for that job for two years while Brown was here.
I'm sure there are really good arguments for players prior to the beginning of my USU years but those two are the best I've seen.

Yeah, I played against Emmett in Highschool. The kid was a freakish athlete and a man among boys then. He single handedly made Ben Lomond a contender for the state championships, and anybody that is familiar with Utah high school sports knows what kind of a feat that is. I was on my mission his sophomore and Junior year, so didn't get to watch as much of his college days.aggies22 wrote: ↑January 22nd, 2019, 8:41 amThe best I've seen? Demario Brown. I remember White and Brown and Abu Wilson being good. But I remember Turbin being absolutely dominant. I'd go with Turbin. I only know running backs from the last 30 years or so.

Re: Best Running Back Ever at USU?
Roy Shivers. He could run, block, receive, pass. He could see the field better than anyone I have seen. He was USU's version of Gayle Sayers. Smooth, lightning quick first step and then the acceleration. USC's legendary coach John McKay had a back named Marcus Allen. Heismann trophy winner. When McKay saw Shivers, he said he would put Shivers up there with Allen and have the same results.
He was drafted I think by St Louis in the NFL and had problems with his knees through a short frustration career. Bounced around to a couple of teams, but his knee problems kept him from doing what he could do. So he really didn't get a chance to prove himself.

Re: Best Running Back Ever at USU?
One of the DEs on Utah's team Roy's Junior Season told me about playing against him. This guy is a 2nd cousin of the Olsen brothers and a man mountain, like them. He said that the hardest he ever got hit by a running back was by Shivers. Said it hurt down to his bones, and that was while Shivers was playing with a broken tibia [? can't remember exactly on that].mcaggie1 wrote: ↑January 22nd, 2019, 10:05 amRoy Shivers. Night Train and Altie are two that I would place right up there close to Shivers, but I agree, Shivers was the best.

And a local, [Granite] HS, where he was state hurdles champ as a senior. Had a nice career at Denver for the Donks.

I can only refer to RB's in my lifetime, I just haven't seen enough of any of the other guys. Having said that my vote would be for Emmett White #1 with Turbin as a close #2

Re: Best Running Back Ever at USU?
After watching all those Turbin touchdown runds, I think Mike Smith might be the best fullback ever.

Re: Best Running Back Ever at USU?
Emmett White straight up carried his team in all phases of the game. He did it all, and he is the greatest in my book.
Honorable mentions: Demario Brown, Turbin, Kerwynn (the 4th quarter of the bowl game against Toledo -WOW)

I don't know about best RB but the 2011 backfield has got to be the best running combination the Aggies have had. Turbin, Smith, Kerrwyn, and Chuckie.

Sure loved how he blew up the safety for Turbin in that 80 yarder against YBU. Smith's block made that TD possible.FloridaAggie13 wrote: ↑January 22nd, 2019, 3:44 pmI think Michael Smith was clocked under 4.3 in the 40.

Re: Best Running Back Ever at USU?
Maurice Turner was a beast. Altie Taylor was great and had a decent pro-career. Rick Parros had a few +200 yard games (as I recall) including one against Utah. Mark White (JC transfer) was very talented.

I wish Darwin was sticking around to see how he would’ve stacked up against the other contenders in this thread.
I give the nod to White & Turbo.

I think he could have been in the discussion with a senior season. As is, one year just didn't do it.Naked Bull Rider wrote:I wish Darwin was sticking around to see how he would’ve stacked up against the other contenders in this thread.

Turbin and Smith both ran a faster 40 than Williams, who runs like he is carrying a small child on his shoulder through jello.FloridaAggie13 wrote: ↑January 22nd, 2019, 3:44 pmI think Michael Smith was clocked under 4.3 in the 40.
