An overlooked turning point

Post by GameFAQSAggie » March 3rd, 2019, 1:28 pm

Everyone talks about the Hawaii game in 2011 as a turning point, but one thing that gets overlooked is the San Jose State win in 2017. Arguably, a turning point for the worse was the loss to San Diego State in 2015. There was one stretch in 2016 where someone made a comparison in records to Brent Guy. The win over San Jose was a step back in the right direction. And while you might have said it was just San Jose State, it was a step in the right direction to beat ANYONE on the road in dominant fashion after going winless on the road in 2016, and even remembering how far we thought we had fallen after the loss to Wake Forest the week earlier. We still weren't that good in 2017, but that win at least set the tone for us to be mediocre in 2017 instead of horrible, at least getting a couple more road wins after that.

Interesting take. SJSU is awful, but that was a complete De-pantsing on the road, nonetheless. That Spartan team somehow looked worse than the time we hung 70 on Weber State.

We then followed it up with a dominant rivalry win. So 2017 was helping us get set for 2018.

Yeah, while it's easy to say that San Jose State in 2017 was awful, we had, well since the Boise State win in 2015, declined to where we thought we were an "awful" team ourselves and that everything Gary built was gone, wanting to fire Wells and thinking he would be after 2017, with some wanting it if we lost that game. And what team, awful or not, did we beat on the road in 2016? San Jose State wasn't much worse than the Nevada team we lost to the year before. We weren't heavily favored in that game, it was a pickem in fact. So dominating in that was a step in the right direction.

Weber State would possibly beat San Jose State now, but not with where they were at in 2013 when we won 70-6. Even in 2017, AFTER they had improved, they only beat Cal Poly by 14, while San Jose State beat them by 21.
