Defensive Back Depth (or lack of?)

Post by Roy McAvoy » June 14th, 2019, 7:50 am

With the turnover and other changes I decided I wanted to actually type out what our Defensive Back situation looks like. With Chris Nash transferring it would seem our depth is now pretty thin. Especially given that by all accounts we will running the same defense Utah has been running with typically five defensive backs on the field. It seems we're barely two guys deep at any position. (Any one listed in green is a new player.)

Cornerback
JeMarcus Ingram (6-1, 185, Jr.)
Jarrod Green (5-11, 180, So.)
Mike Anyanwu (5-9, 180, RsFr.)
Keith Harris (6-0, 166, Fr.)

Cornerback
Cameron Haney (5-10, 185, Sr.)
Zahodri Jackson (5-10, 185, So.)
Dominic Tatum (6-2, 185, Fr.)
Demarcus Griffin Taylor CB (5-9, 170 Fr.)
Jared Reed (6-0, 175, So.)

Field Safety
Braxton Gunther (5-10, 185, Jr.)
Cash Gilliam (5-11, 195, Jr.)
Isaiah Haywood (6-0, 180 RsFr.)

Boundary Safety
Shaq Bond (5-10, 190, Jr.)
Troy Lefeged (5-11, 190, Jr.)

Nickel
DJ Williams (5-9, 180, Sr.)
Andre Grayson (5-8, 165, So.)

Two question marks I have is if JeMarcus Ingram will be moved to Safety. If he does I think he would start over Gunther. I also have to wonder if Baron Gajkowski will be moved back to Safety in any capacity?

I didn't include Larenz Redd or Nehemiah Shird beacuse I believe both are freshman walk-ons and I can't see either having a chance of seeing the field next year.

I’m not sure about Baron being moved back or not but isn’t he like 30+ lbs bigger than the largest guy on this entire list?

Haney took reps as a safety late in the spring. If what you have is listed as a depth chart Roy, Dominic Tatum ran all of spring ball with the second team. If anyone is wondering, I will continue to release my position-by-position preseason previews as I have in the past.

I think the only way JaMarcus is moved to safety (again sort of?) is if the coaching staff is confident that there is another starter in the group of backups.

Interesting. I didn't realize that about Haney. I moved Tatum down because Ingram was not part of spring ball. Putting Ingram back in just bumped him down was all.
