SDSU

How good will they be this year? I don’t think we’ve beat them in my lifetime. 22 do you know?

From the schedule page the last win was in 1967 (so it depends on old you are):
@ San Diego State
Sat, November 25, 1967
31-25

SDSU is a run heavy team. If we can stop the run, I think shutting down their QB will be a very manageable task for us. On defense, I don’t expect them to be as strong as last year.

It really helps we have a bye week before playing them.

Similar to last year in basketball I really want the victory in football against SDSU. 4 years ago was so deflating getting taken to the wood shed after the boise victory the week prior. I have no clue what to expect this from SDSU. Last year they were very hot beating Boise, but then cold also with SJSU driving to win the game, but then turning the ball over. They are generally a run heavy team so that will be a key.

I'm actually shocked that we have beat them the one time back in the 70's. I didn't think we'd ever won a game in the series.

I hadn't really dug into our opponents yet but I agree with everyone else's assessment that they are and will continue to be a run-heavy team.

They return their two leading rushers, Juwan Washington (1,000+ yards) and Chase Jasmin (600+ yards) and add a Nebraska transfer Greg Bell (Nebraska fans aren't high on him). QB Ryan Agnew is back and only threw for 1,600 yards with 10 TDs and 6 INTs. He certainly isn't a world beater but he is clearly a game manager. They return 3 WRs who combined for 43 receptions last year which is probably close to what we'll have returned as well. The TE is also a returning starter who caught 16 passes, our own Carson Terrell caught 10 passes with limited targets. Junior left tackle Kyle Spalding is a converted TE who has only played special teams, right tackle Joey Capra is a true freshman, senior left guard Daishawn Dixon will be a three-year starter, right guard Billy Dunkle is a redshirt freshman and did not play a single snap in 2018 despite the new four-game redshirt rule. Center Keith Ismael is a first-team All-Mountain West two-year starter. Oregon transfer guard Jacob Capra could fit in somewhere here. If he beats anyone out it will be Dunkle or his brother Joey. We don't have an All-Mountain West caliber returning starter but we do have more overall experience returning in 2019.

Defensively, The projected starting front three of Connor Mitchell, Myles Cheatum, and Keshawn Banks totaled 42 tackles and 2.0 sacks with 27 of those and the 2 sacks belonging to Banks. The starting three linebackers include returning leading tackler first-team All-Mountain West performer Kyahva Tezino (127 tackles, 14.5 tackles-for-loss, 8.5 sacks), Andrew Aleki (22 tackles) and Caden McDonald (2 tackles). Tezino is a very good player but he can't be everywhere all the time. The Aztecs play 5 defensive backs. The CB's should be senior Luq Barcoo (20 tackles) and sophomore Darren Hall (45 tackles, 2 INTs) started the final three games of the season. The 3 safeties should be junior two-time All-Mountain West performer Tariq Thompson (60 tackles) he is a very good coverage guy, senior Kyree Woods (37 tackles) started 10 of 13 games last year, and junior Dwayne Johnson Jr. (2 tackles and no relation to The Rock). I think the secondary is the strength of the San Diego State defense this year. Establishing a running attack against these guys is a MUST! Our offense has to find a way to soften up the defensive coverage and force them to peek into the backfield looking for the run. If we can't do that and find ourselves having to throw a lot because we are behind the chains it could be another loooong afternoon. Although there are a few unknowns at WR for us, having a senior transfer like Siaosi Mariner SHOULD help the offense because a graduate senior should be able to plug and play with little to no learning curver. The offense has to exploit the early inexperience of the front six.

Coach Andersen publicly stated that the closed practices during spring ball we so that there could be specific focus on the Aggies defense being able to defend against the rushing attack of Air Force and the Aggie offense being able to move the ball against the San Diego State 3-3-5 defense. These two games are clearly important games to the new Aggie coaching staff.

One big reason I am planning on going to this game is because like mentioned above we haven’t beaten them, like ever

Aggies22, can you provide the same type of preview for each mwc team that we play? It would be greatly appreciated!

P.S. please include Wake Forest. I'm curious to know what your keys to winning against each of these teams is given what we know right now.

SDSU, I probably want to beat even more than Boise. The first time we were being mentioned for MWC membership their president at the time Stephen Weber didn't think we were worthy of membership.

You should also consider picking up Phil Steele's magazine if you want an in-depth preview of who we play. I learned a lot about Wake Forest that way and am looking forward to reading the others.22 does a great job but we don't want to overburden him with work.

We should match up well with. On defense we have a great front 7 that matches up well with their run offense. Jordan love will give any team he plays fits this year with maybe the exception of LSU.

I couldn't care less about national media. I guess the exception is when they highlight one of our current games or players.

Phil Steele isn't your typical national media member. He is meticulous in his research. I would venture to say 99% of college football fans would love his magazine.

I would dare say that Phil's magazine might be a little confusing to the casual fan. He uses a lot of abbreviations and stats that many might not understand but to football dorks such as myself, I enjoy his work.

Not to piss in your punch bowl, but Phil Steele is a little behind the times now. Guys like Bill Connelly have taken what he initially started and are having more success (i.e. better predicting season performance), while also putting out a more digestible form of content.

Thanks for letting me know you pissed in my punch bowl. I'll stop drinking from it now, throw it out, wash the bowl and make a fresh batch. :)

eh... I love the robot but I don't see the two as competitive with each other. More like two assets in a tool belt. Steele will get much more into depth charts and players individually. While Bill may give some analysis there, it is nowhere as through. But Bill is far more advanced in analytics. Commonly, Bill talks about how the numbers love/hate a team preseason but he doesn't have a way to analyze it properly. Like with Gary coming back, the numbers don't know how to process that. Phil does (well a bit more.)

Bill Connelly certainly involves more predictive metrics in his analysis that can be more valuable. Call me old-fashioned, but I like having the magazine in my hands with the ability to flip through to any team I'm curious about. It's a matter of convenience for me, even if it's a bit less accurate. Does Bill just do his publishing online or does he have other forms of print?
