Athletics revenue (esp. football)

Post by BigBlueDart » July 24th, 2019, 10:36 am

With the talk about the media deal I'm getting curious about what all of our athletic department's revenue sources are and how much each of them is. I may not be Googling this very well as I haven't found anything on my own, yet. Can anyone point me to a break down of where the department's money comes from? How much from media rights, other conference revenues, ticket sales, donations, etc.?

Thanks! From that I was able to get the breakdown in millions for each MWC school for 2017:

Air Force: Tickets - $3.5; Contributions - $8.7; Rights - $11.0; Students - $0.4; School - $33.0; Other - $3.0; Total - $60.0
Boise St: Tickets - $7.4; Contributions - $10.3; Rights - $12.1; Students - $3.2; School - $9.4; Other - $3.0; Total - $45.5
Colorado St: Tickets - $4.2; Contributions - $3.7; Rights - $11.5; Students - $5.8; School - $17.4; Other - $2.0; Total - $44.7
Fresno St: Tickets - $5.1; Contributions - $9.6; Rights - $9.2; Students - $4.4; School - $16.3; Other - $1.6; Total - $46.2
Hawai'i: Tickets - $5.8; Contributions - $4.2; Rights - $12.4; Students - $1.5; School - $19.0; Other - $4.9; Total - $47.8
Nevada: Tickets - $3.8; Contributions - $9.4; Rights - $6.9; Students - $2.8; School - $9.7; Other - $4.4; Total - $37.0
New Mexico: Tickets - $5.8; Contributions - $9.9; Rights - $12.2; Students - $4.0; School - $7.7; Other - $4.8; Total - $44.4
UNLV: Tickets - $4.9; Contributions - $7.7; Rights - $11.1; Students - $3.0; School - $18.6; Other - $2.1; Total - $47.3
SDSU: Tickets - $5.8; Contributions - $8.8; Rights - $11.7; Students - $11.1; School - $13.2; Other - $1.8; Total - $52.5
SJSU: Tickets - $0.8; Contributions - $2.4; Rights - $4.9; Students - $8.4; School - $12.9; Other - $1.9; Total - $31.3
Utah St: Tickets - $2.0; Contributions - $4.7; Rights - $6.4; Students - $5.1; School - $13.8; Other - $2.4; Total - $34.4
Wyoming: Tickets - $4.4; Contributions - $7.6; Rights - $8.1; Students - $2.1; School - $18.8; Other - -$0.5; Total - $40.4

I'm assuming that $1.1 million from tv goes in the "Rights" bucket. We are second-to-last in that category, as well as in ticket sales and overall budget. Our "contributions" category is on the low end, but we are beating out SJSU, Hawai'i, and Colorado St in that department, at least. Our student fees and school contributions aren't too high or too low relative to the rest of the group. I think it comes down to branding and program excitement. The "Cheap Valley" stigma is also a likely factor. Probably why the AD is hesitant about raising ticket prices too quickly.

I’ve heard (I can't express myself without swearing) on here about how high our ticket prices are already. I can’t imagine raising them. They’re a bargain for the value you get, IMO. Both schools down south charge significantly more for their season tix and with Utah there is a waiting list.

Yes USU tickets are a real bargain at $115 for a east side seat on the 40 yard line.
over the same season ewe of ewe got $17 million in ticket sales so despite having a bigger stadium their fans are really paying for tickets

There was a time when Utah was like us and couldn't consistently fill their stadium. A few things happened for Utah:

1. They started winning a lot and consistently, including BCS trips.
2. Then they got into the PAC12.
3. Now they're still winning with PAC12 home games each year...
4. Salt Lake is bigger and proximity does play a role in things. They have a lot of bandwagon fans who don't really have a connection to the school outside of proximity.

Anyway, the only thing USU can control is to continue winning. We likely won't ever be on the same level as Utah, but it doesn't seem unrealistic to get close to something like Boise State, who I'm sure is crushing us in ticket sales as well. It all starts with winning.

Boise St led the conference in ticket revenue in 2017 with $7.4 million. We were second-to-last with our $2.0 million. SJSU was worst with $0.8 million.

I would be thrilled to get what Wyoming gets from ticket sales. I do not think the ewe fans are bandwagon fans when you consider they have sold out since 2008.

I think 2018 probably weren't better than 2017. Maybe similar. But 2019 should see a big increase based on the schedule + hype from last season.

I hope you are right with both football and basketball finishing in the top 25 in the final A.P. poll. I think they have earned a better showing from locals and Alums.

I went on the site and picked up 2 season tickets for friends, and was surprised that I could get east side reserves between the 40's for $115 each. It looks to me like there are a awful lot of tickets left for sale, maybe folks wait until later to buy tickets, but with what the team did on the field, and the home schedule I thought we would do better.

My hope is to get as much ticket revenue as Wyoming does couple that with a $1-2 million dollar increase in T.V. revenue in the near future, that would bring USU close to a $40 million overall budget which is small but decent.

The ewe has a lot of bandwagon fans. I live in the southeast part of the Salt Lake Valley, and I see manyBW fans here.

What does a ewe BW fan look like ? I would like to have USU BW fans that would sell out tiny Maverik for 10 year straight resulting in a needed expansion.

I agree it’s disappointing to see 600+ $115 season tickets between the 40’s available. However, it’s much better than last year, and similar to other Mountain West teams (Boise State is an outlier with much higher prices).

I went on the site and picked up 2 season tickets for friends, and was surprised that I could get east side reserves between the 40's for $115 each. I looks to me like there are a awful lot of tickets left for sale, maybe folks wait until later to buy tickets, but with what the team did on the field, and the home schedule I thought we would do better.

My hope is to get as much ticket revenue as Wyoming does couple that with a $1-2 million dollar increase in T.V. revenue in the near future, that would bring USU close to a $40 million overall budget which is small but decent.
I agree it’s disappointing to see 600+ $115 season tickets between the 40’s available. However, it’s much better than last year, and similar to other Mountain West teams (Boise State is an outlier with much higher prices).

We might never get what BSU gets in ticket sales revenue, but we should be able to get at least close to what Wyoming gets. The same seats that we sell for $115 in the upper section above the students costs $235 plus a donation of $250-$500. they have sold many more of those season tickets at that price than what we have.If we can not do better do we actually belong in the MWC ? Is it fair for fans to expect the school to win when we give so little.

I do not understand why we do not do much better. I did not attend USU so maybe I do not understand why there is not more school pride and passion. I feel sad and foolish that I care and spend, when so few alums and townspeople do.

I actually went to the ewe I have bought season tickets to both schools, but decided to support USU because when I moved to Logan, I thought it is better to support the town and University where you live. I sent my kid to USU he got a good education, and is a season ticket holder and makes donations despite living in SLC.

I'm done preaching to the choir I feel like most folks on here are not the problem, lets all do what we can to help the cause, myself included.
