The Scotsman!
One thing I am super excited about Saturday is to be able to hear the Scotsman live again. The Aggie fight song is fine for me, I don't think it is anything special, but I like it. Now the Scotsman, that is something sacred to me. For me there is not another fight song or school song in the country that comes on par with the Scotsman. Like George Strait said about the heartland that it brings a smile to your face and a tear to your eye, that is how I would describe the Scotsman for me.

I like the alma mater before the game, gets the crowd mellowed really well. Why don't we do that anymore?

Re: The Scotsman!
We have "Hail, the Utah Aggies" and the "Scotsman".
BYU has "Rise and Shout" and "Popcorn Popping".
I think we win.

Re: The Scotsman!
fight song is fun and great to sing, but easily recognizable as a fight song
the scotsman is unique to us. it's awesome. i would love it if in front of the student section they put in a concrete pot large enough for a single brush of sage and everyone pointed at it or something during the final line of the song

We as Aggies seem to have a sense of community far superior to the other instate schools.
It's not a sense of superiority the Utes have. Quite frankly they seem more proud of their conference then their school. It's not the pious pompousness of the Cougars.
No, it's something different. It's a more humble attitude. As if to say we know we aren't the best school in the world- but we're a mighty fine one. It's a place where we came and we lived, we froze, we learned and we grew. It became a second home to us all and we left a piece of ourselves there.
The Scotsman captures that spirit in a way that transcends sports.

I always hated that part when I was an undergrad student! My Father-in-law would always look for the lyrics in the program and then comment about how "beautiful" it was. (Now I'm a dad so I'm "old" and it probably wouldn't bother me as much)

Didn't a Boy Scout troop plant some sage brush in the NE corner a few years ago? Is it still there?AndroidAggie wrote: ↑September 6th, 2019, 8:08 amfight song is fun and great to sing, but easily recognizable as a fight song

Re: The Scotsman!
I actually would really like for the Alma mater to become more of a thing. After Buckeye games they ring the bells in the towers and the team goes over in front of the student section and locks arms and sings Carmen Ohio, their alma mater, before heading into the locker room. The vast majority of the stadium sticks around in their seat long enough to sing that making it a big part of the game day tradition there.BigBlueSteve wrote: ↑September 6th, 2019, 11:16 amI always hated that part when I was an undergrad student! Re: The Scotsman!
The alma mater isn’t part of the band’s pregame show anymore ever since the leadership changed. Unless I’m very much mistaken, the band now plays the alma mater at the end of the game
Will respond whenever you ask what the band is doing

Great question. I have been away from Utah for a few years now. I have no idea.SectionFaggie wrote: ↑September 6th, 2019, 12:39 pmDidn't a Boy Scout troop plant some sage brush in the NE corner a few years ago? Is it still there?

Re: The Scotsman!
We’ve had season tickets for the past 4 seasons and I don’t think I’ve heard the alma mater once except maybe at homecoming. Might just be that I missed it while waking to the car or something.trombone_ninja wrote: ↑September 6th, 2019, 6:06 pmThe alma mater isn’t part of the band’s pregame show anymore ever since the leadership changed. Re: The Scotsman!
Scotsman was played only once the whole game. And the student and band were off a whole phrase. Alma mater was played after time expired though.

Re: The Scotsman!
It was actually played twice. The second time was late in the third quarter. But still, it should have been played way more than that.

Re: The Scotsman!
I thought it was weird, too. Back in the days when it was me waving my hands in front of the band I made sure that anytime we played the fight song we played the Scotsman immediately after.
Honestly, it likely has something to do with the band being cut off earlier than they used to by the guys running the show in the press box so they can make an announcement, play a commercial or promo, or let the spirit squad perform.
That was always a constant battle that no one knows about when it comes to the band. It was always annoying to never be allotted much time to play, especially with how often they played canned music over the speakers instead.

Re: The Scotsman!
I say we just sing it after a score regardless if the band plays it or not. They’ll catch on.

Re: The Scotsman!
Kinda doubt it lol it always felt like the band was just an afterthought to the guys talking to us through the headset. We never got much time to play and it seems like it’s even less this year.AggieUprising50 wrote: ↑September 7th, 2019, 11:32 pmI say we just sing it after a score regardless if the band plays it or not. Sagebrushes grow in many places. They should update it to something specific to Cache Valley.

Where the ice cream flows?
Where the farmer hoes?
Where the north wind blows?
I say keep the sagebrush.
