3 things that stood out to me
1. The defense played an incredible game. Minus a few passing game miscues, we really flexed our defensive muscles. The offense+special teams gave CSU a score and many short fields. It’s amazing what we held them to, especially in the run game.
2. DOM was crucial this game. That 48 yard field goal was so clutch to break the tie game. I’m sure it was not easy to kick in those weather conditions. Big time job by Eberle.
3. Uhh, our offense only scored 2 TDs against CSU. I know weather conditions hindered us, but, I have not been that impressed with J. Love this year. He’s a high risk, high reward QB right now. 3 turnovers were on him last night. Overall this season, lots of turnovers and snaps hitting him on the hands and then the turf.

Dom’s kick was on a bad snap and laces in. That was huge

I think he’s trying too hard to make big plays and is not making great decisions as a result. A lot of risky throws I didn’t see him try to make last year.
Needs to just calm down and focus on the little things like securing the snap and making good decisions with the ball.

Re: 3 things that stood out to me
I think he did better in the second half with not forcing so much. I noticed him throwing a couple passes away when nothing was there. That was something he did really good at last year. If it wasn’t there he would get rid of it and on to the next down.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑September 29th, 2019, 11:23 amI think he’s trying too hard to make big plays and is not making great decisions as a result. I also think it’s possible that all the attention has gotten to him a bit. The Heismen push by the school, talks of NFL, etc. I think it might take him a bit to learn how to deal with the attention without letting it affect his game. He is a great quarterback and has all the tools to be as good as last year. Just needs to lighten up a bit.

Re: 3 things that stood out to me
I don’t blame Love as much for this picks. The pick 6 was on one of the most difficult routes to throw in poor conditions after we had run the identical play. The DB was squatting on that route and it was a dumb call. 3 of his picks this year are on this play. Probably should junk it or run some double moves off it.
A bunch of things I think are plaguing him:
1. The snaps are bad. In the RPO stuff any snap he has to reach for is bad. He has to read the defense while watching the ball and if he has to reach for the ball it throws everything off.
2. Our screen game disappeared. We got huge chunk plays last year in the screen game. Our screen game this year is really bad.
3. We seem to be in third and long a lot more. Sanford seems to love inside zone on first down and it’s getting predictable and putting us behind the chains and that’s harder on any QB
4. Running game isn’t nearly as explosive as last year. Bright was great last night but we don’t seem to pop as many 20+ plays as last year in the run game which is limiting our explosiveness and putting more on Love
5. I don’t think we attack vertically enough especially off play action. We hit a pretty high percentage of our deep shots last night and we have guys that can get deep.
6. Loves foot work still seems sloppy. Late in the game on that streak to Thompkins down our sideline he was open and breaking away. Love threw it off his back foot and left it short. I still think he’s a really good deep thrower but he isn’t stepping into some throws
7. I don’t doubt some preseason hype and pressure is getting to him.

I also noticed that laces were in. The snap was high it did not give the holder much time to get it down. Seriously amazing field goal with the weather, the distance, high snap and laces in.

I think it has less to do with love and more to do with the offensive system. He probably isn’t quite as good as the offense made him look last season, and not quite as bad as he looks this season.USUMAE wrote:I agree strongly with #3.
Why do you think he seems to be struggling? Is it the receiving corps? Are teams preparing better for him? Is he simply over-rated?

Re: 3 things that stood out to me
Cogent posts above on this subject and I do wonder about the current offense we run. Appears to me our "O" line is getting better but hasn't yet reached the level of last seasons "O" line performance. I do wonder about our center direct snapping game.

Re: 3 things that stood out to me
I disagree with #3. The two picks were an issue with play calling, not Love making the wrong read or making a bad throw. His two TD’s were nice throws, especially the TD to Repp. That was big time.BLUERUFiO wrote: ↑September 29th, 2019, 11:07 am1. The defense played an incredible game. Getting the snaps down is the biggest issue ive seen. No excuse for that fumble on the one yard line. Once he and the center get a hold of snapping the ball they’ll be just fine.

That throw to Repp just as a wave of rain hit hard was very special stuff! Bright carrying the team on his shoulders. Long in the rain field goal goes in. Strip Six, yeah buddy! You really had to be at the game to appreciate how the weather affected the game. It was crazy some of the throws made in the deluge. Real proud of our Boys gutting it out and taking the W!

Anyone who has watched Ace Ventura knows how important it is to have the laces out. If that kick would have been missed, Eberle’s mom would want the holder to die of gonorrhea and rot in hell.

Those CSU fans that are also Bronco fans just got a taste of how we felt last night with a controversial roughing the passer call on the Jaguars game winning drive. Along with another controversial one on the Bears drive two weeks ago. We do have a few posters though that are Bears fans who would certainly defend the call against the Broncos in the Bears game.

Pass protecting is a problem for the offensive line. Pressure that is coming at him this year was not there last year. That combined with the bad snaps and that is why Love seems a bit off.

Regarding #3, I don't think Jordan Love is all to blame. His receivers just aren't all that open and we haven't really seen much creativity and misdirection in the offense.

Re: 3 things that stood out to me
Great post as well. These are solid observations and spot on. Sanford's offense has been vanilla so far and it's been disappointing. I'd love to see some designed runs with some more variety than just our variations of the read option every time.Intermeddler wrote: ↑September 29th, 2019, 12:08 pmI don’t blame Love as much for this picks. I've included two videos here of examples of type of plays that show creativity, misdirection, and keeps the defense on their toes. So far I don't feel like we've really seen anything like this out of USU.

[In response to #2 why do you think our screen game is so garbage this year? Last year our screen game was awesome, but this year it has been terrible. There were several times Thompson or Bright took it to the house on those, this year we are lucky not to lose yards.]
Re: 3 things that stood out to me
Put Jordan Love on a big-name team and he takes them to playoffs and competes for Heisman. Put him on Utah State and he makes average to below-average offensive players look like good players. Having no time all game, playing in the rain, receiver dropping and running bad/ rounded routes, calling the same play twice, calling nothing but runs down the middle or quick turn and throw plays are predictable. He is a lot better than he looks there is just more to the story.
Re: 3 things that stood out to me
The post about lack of creativity is the right on. That CB was prepared and if you watch the film as soon as Love turns his body to the side he begins sprinting to cut off the route, it's that predictable for prepared defenses.

Re: 3 things that stood out to me
Love threw late and inaccurate on both picks. Mariner rounded his route so he shares some blame on the first pick.
The route to Mariner is a standard bearer of which QBs are measured. Can't make that throw consistently, can't play at the next level.

Re: 3 things that stood out to me
What concerns me the most is our red zone offense. We have been terrible at scoring once in the red zone. Our red zone TD scoring rate is something like half the FBS average. Discounting the last possessions against CSU and SDSU, where the team took a knee in the victory formation while in the red zone, USU has scored one TD in its last six red zone trips, and that was Warren's second quarter run against SDSU. In our three games against FBS opponents, USU has scored only 4 TDs in 11 red zone trips (officially 13 trips when counting the end of the SDSU and CSU games). I have a feeling that ineptitude will haunt us at some crucial point.

Re: 3 things that stood out to me
Love is fine. Last year the run game helped a ton and as mentioned was more explosive. Mariner didn’t get going as much in this game and that hurt the passing game and as mentioned the screen game to the running backs has been lacking. I think the screen game to the receivers has been better. New oline and new receivers. Give it time and they will breakout.

Re: 3 things that stood out to me
Statistically our rushing has been virtually identical to last year. According to ESPN stats, the 2018 team averaged 5.5 yards per rush and averaged 203.2 yards per game. This year's team is averaging 5.3 yards per rush and 206.8 yards per game. Passing yards per game is up as well, with 294.2 yards per game last year and 326.3 for this year. Surprisingly we are even doing better on 3rd down percentage, at a 50% rate this year versus a 47% rate last year. What is down, significantly, is scoring, with a 38.5 points per game average this year versus 47.5 points per game last year.
Regarding Love, this biggest difference this year is interceptions. He threw a total of six interceptions all of last year, but has thrown five through the first four games of the season this year. He only has six TDs against those five interceptions whereas last year he had 32 TDs against six interceptions. In other areas he is succeeding better, he has a slightly higher completion percentage this year versus last year, at 64.8% versus 64%. He is also averaging more yards per game.
Just looking at all of the numbers, it does not seem the argument about the rushing attack being less explosive is statistically valid. So far this biggest difference I see is turnovers and red zone scoring. Last year's team averaged 1.384 turnovers per game and we are averaging 2 turnovers per game so far this year. Last years team ranked 41st in red zone scoring at 86.79%, while this years team is tied for 119th at 66.7%. Statistically everything else is virtually the same as or better than last year

Re: 3 things that stood out to me
Yup, we need to turn the ball over less and score more in the red zone. I think some of that is playing against better defenses for sure. Love has six interceptions with less TDs. I definitely think we are missing a Tarver-type of receiver.
Re: 3 things that stood out to me
Good stuff. Defense has 6 turnovers this year. Last year we had 32. Would be nice if we could get to that number again .... number 1 in interceptions last year. Number 85 so far this year.swordsman1989 wrote:Statistically our rushing has been virtually identical to last year. Last years team ranked 41st in red zone scoring at 86.79%, while this years team is tied for 119th at 66.7%. Statistically everything else is virtually the same as or better than last year
