It's the Great BBD Stats, Charlie Brown! - Week 14 (New Mexico)

Post by BigBlueDart » November 26th, 2019, 7:56 am

Last week:

USU - 21.99 (21) (104.48 (121) rush, 267.17 (307) pass, 371.64 (428)total)
Boise St - 34.00 (56) (184.56 (297) rush, 288.07 (187) pass, 472.63 (484) total)

The numbers guessed a little low on our offensive production (though proportional). Looks like we completely gave up on defending the run, though. Pass and rushing performance for Boise were more or less opposite from what was predicted, here. I was surprised to see how many yards we got and that Boise didn't get more. I guess that comes down to the pick-6 and punt return, as well as Red Zone issues on both sides of the ball.

Interestingly enough, our relative offensive production was good this past game. I mean, I know it didn't feel like it. There are some clear issues (Red Zone), but it has me thinking I need to not judge Sanford too quickly, yet. Our defensive numbers are not looking great, though. Honestly, if anything I think Ena would need to be reassessed before Sanford, but I'm not going to call for his head just yet, either. I'm hoping Gary can mentor him (assuming Gary still has his defensive chops).

New Mexico has been interesting this year, in that while they look like the worst team in the MWC in the win-loss columns, they are still ranking above 2 or 3 other teams in this analysis. It appears they have pretty close to average offense, with their run game being pretty good, but their pass game a bit weak. They do struggle to actually score, though. On defense they are okay at stopping the run, but really they are terrible in every other facet. So, while their run game worries me a little, I see their pass defense and I start to salivate. Looking for a 2 touchdown margin victory here.

Never mind about New Mexico being above a couple of teams. They're back to the bottom this week. Interesting how low I've ranked Nevada week to week, though, yet they have somehow managed to get to 7 wins (and may get 8). I can only guess that it's because their wins haven't been blowouts, but a number of their losses have. Still weird.

The 3rd "best team" in the MWC got spanked hard by the #1 team. It happens I guess.

Just another day in the (Aggie) Brotherhood

I love it that your predicted score, 37-23, is within a couple of points of mine, 34-23.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
