I haven't had a chance to listen to the interview so I don't know if the subject was discussed or not, but Anderson has offered the possibility of playing conference games only in the upcoming season.
If this goes - it is a funny situation for BYU.

Re: Gary Andersen on 1280/97.5 The Zone today
If we only play conference games, we would finish higher in passing defense and lower in passing defense than we would if we play our full schedule, since we wouldn't have our game where we give up 500 passing yards against Washington State while holding them to 20 rushing yards going in the totals.
Of, course alot of the G5 teams ranked higher in the stats and P5 teams ranked lower than they would normally be cause the G5 teams not having the one money game against the P5 team bringing up their totals and the P5 teams wouldn't have the one or two cupcake games bringing up their totals. Then again, Maybe the G5 teams losing their P5 game and their FCS game would cancel each other out.
The other funny thing is, there is enough speculation about who would win hypothetical matchups that never happen, like when a G5 beats a P5 once and it's debatable if they would be able to do it regularly playing the whole conference schedule. Or how games would turn out if played at a different site, time, with teams having different personnel available, made a decision to play different people, use different strategies, etc. Imagine if teams ONLY got the chance to prove themselves against the conference mates, and someone from the MAC went 8-0 and there was no way to prove if they would that year been able to beat a Big Ten team. Or Boise goes 8-0 in the Mountain West with no chance at a P5 win.
One thing BYU could do is play the other independents, getting them a game with Notre Dame, but maybe not Notre Dame if they are able to work out a deal to get a Big Ten or ACC schedule for just this year. Then BYU would just play the other four independents home and home. You could only imagine their egos about going 8-0 with that schedule. You think it's bad when they think a quarterback change makes a difference the second half of the year when it's really the schedule getting easier, wait until they go 8-0 aginst UMASS, New Mexico State, Army and Liberty and think it's only cause of how much they improved. Along with how their egos would be inflated from seeing Utah lose half their games. And it's funny that Utah could go 4-4 beating USC at home like they usually do when they come to SLC, yet the perception would be BYU being the better team cause of a better record.

One perk from canceling non-conference games is we can finally pin a two home games to one away against BYU-P.

I would think that instead of just playing conference games they would set a starting date at say 10-1 so as to protect indy schools.

I don't think we'd actually skip a game in Provo. I'm guessing it would push the entire series back a season. That might also not be a bad thing. I know the AD was trying to get the BYU and Boise games into alternating seasons and this may be the easiest way to get that done.

USU isn't going to be able to push the series back a year, it will make 3 NC road games in 2021 then 3 home NC games in 2022. Unfortunately, what I think will happen if 2020 isn't played is that we end up rescheduling it for 2023, leaving us playing there for both the 2022 and 2023 seasons.ProvoAggie wrote:I don't think we'd actually skip a game in Provo.
