Analysis of 2020 Recruiting Class

Post by YoungBloodAggie » February 5th, 2020, 9:17 am

Anyone that pays attention to my commentary on recruiting (and it's probably not a significant number of folks) has likely noticed that I've been very high on this class for awhile. Keegan Andersen has stepped into the DPP role and filled it well, especially considering the limitations that the team faced this year in the recruiting realm. I'd like to sort these commits into buckets and give just a little commentary on how I think each guy will do in the program.

Tier I - Potential Four Year Contributors

John Gentry - Possibly the best recruit we've ever had come through here. If he didn't share the spotlight with so many other playmakers (especially Zach Evans), he would likely have received more attention and been rated a four-star prospect.

Elelyon Noa - Yup, two RBs that could contribute from now until 2025. Noa dealt with injuries that derailed a lot of his senior season recruiting, and was also considered to be destined for either SDSU or Boise State so many potential suitors backed off.

Keegan Duncan - This guy has the athleticism and brains that we are accustomed to seeing in our linebacking corps. I think the best comparison is probably Nick Vigil, and he will likely join our recent strong lineage of ILB talent. Possible NFL guy.

Poukesi Vakauta - Needs to beef up a little, but could see some action as a true freshman and will likely be a guy we rely on for two to three years. If you haven't watched this guy, check out his Hudl highlights. You'll love his energy/motor/tenacity.

Stephen Kotsanlee - For some reason 24/7 thinks this guy is not up to the ProKick Australia pedigree, but that may be due to a lack of film/time to evaluate. All indications point to him competing right away for the punting role. Already enrolled.

Tier II - Immediate JUCO/Grad Transfer Difference Makers

Xavion Steele - The expectation is that Steele can come in and challenge for a starting spot immediately. Anything less is a disappointment.

Justin McGriff - Will act as that big target we have enjoyed in years past with guys like Mariner, Tarver, and Sharp. Great size and good pedigree.

Marcus Moore - Sorely needed depth and talent for our DL. Moore putting up a good performance could be the difference between a mediocre defensive front and a good one.

Tier III - Future Talent We May Forget About Until 2022

Luke Marion - When we lost Nicolas Session to Oklahoma State I thought we'd missed on a quality future safety. We ended up with a higher rated guy that has an NFL father. Not too shabby!

Jakob Robinson - Athletic kid that will probably need a couple years to get used to the collegiate competitive level.

Dahlin Mesake - Went underrecruited out of Bishop Gorman, but has the frame and measurables to be Tipa Galeai-esque. Imagine three good years of Tipa instead of two!

Otto Tia - Really high athleticism and great body frame for this guy to be a killer linebacker. Is switching positions and going on a mission, so we'll need to wait on him for a while.

Broc Lane - Late addition that will hopefully blossom into a Dax Raymond-level guy for us (at worst let's hope for Kellen Bartlett). Right now he is a pass catcher, but will need to develop into a well-rounded guy with blocking ability for Gary's teams.

Tier IV - Wild Cards

Bowen Fjord and Isaiah Afatasi - Both kids are going on missions and have the raw athleticism to be D1 players. Anything could happen here, from surprise breakout players to transfers after a year or two on the roster.

Justice Ena and Breaker Mendenhall - Coaches' kids. You hope that their pedigree and athleticism can translate into solid contributors at some point in their collegiate careers, but they were both lightly recruited.

James Hansen - Lightly recruited JUCO guy. Maybe the coaching staff sees something in him (and this staff has found diamonds in the rough before), but its possible we could whiff on this scholarship. At times you have to roll the dice at places like USU to find hidden gems (shoutout Noah Young and Bobby Wagner for representing the two ends of that spectrum).

Tier V - Special Teams

Joey Rouly, Jacob Garcia, Ryan Marks - I have no idea. People say that each one of these guys has what it takes. I'm inclined to believe them. My personal opinion on kickers and specialists is that you don't know until you see them under pressure. We are hoping for Eberle-level guys, but I'd settle for a Nick Diaz.

Moore hasn't played since Oct of 2018. I'm not saying he doesn't have the ability to do something great for us, but I see him more as a wild card.

Yeah, I don't want to get my hopes up too much with Moore because in 2018 he actually "medically retired". I'm not sure what's transpired since then for him to be back playing football again or his health status prior to the injury.

Didn't mean to say he would be playing in 2020, just that he is probably 25-30 pounds shy of where he ought to be. The mission will probably help with that! ;)

Yeah but we only lost one.

I am feeling pretty good about McGriff, Thompkins, Nathan, and Savon.

Savon's role is primarily going to be KR - and my BFF and Savon are SRs....thought we would be looking to get some WRs for the future

I think we are looking okay for 2021. We will still have McGriff and Thompkins, plus I'd expect one or two guys from the Ajani/Kanen Eaton/Tim Patrick/Van Leeuwen group to step up. I also have been led to believe that Isaiah Afatasi could make the change to a slot receiver role.

One thing that I didn't realize about Noa (apologies to '22 or anyone else that may have mentioned this and I missed it) -- He is the all-time leading rusher in his high school's history. He comes from the same high school that produced Reggie Bush. That is impressive.

Yep! I made sure to ask him about it back when I interviewed him. He did it in just two and a half years!

funny you say this.

I saw Jordan Nathan at Walmart in Logan on a couple weeks ago. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like four pounds of crab legs without paying.

The girl at the nearest register was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the register.
When she took the first bundle of legs and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each one and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

He paid her in crumpled cash and change. After he left, she realized he had paid 8 cents of it in Canadian pennies.

Sorry to break the news this way to you, YBA. I know you are a big fan of his.

No way can we count on Nathan next year. We should've brought in more WRs :stirpot: ;)
funny you say this.

This is tough news to hear, but I won't have an opinion until we hear Jordan's side.

As his #1 fan, I think it's only fair we hear him out.

My thoughts on recruiting? Honestly, I’m a little underwhelmed overall. I’m excited about the two freshman running back additions, but they will be freshman.

I really think we need another grad DL, a grad WR, and grad RB. Any idea if we are still looking for any of those?

I think this is what GA basically said and the recruiting banquet last night. Said they have 2 spots left but if they need 3 they will somehow find another.

Not a lot of stuff that hasn't already been said. They introduced Dave Schramm. Coach Maile reiterated that we have returned to a 3-4 defensive scheme. Coach Andersen talked about the importance of fund raising and how this offseason will be different because they will only be adding about 19 new dudes to the program instead of 50 like last season. Coach Andersen also said they have created the 30/30 club. They want 30 players to be able to bench press 225 pounds 20 times. IF I remember correctly Coach Hicks said they have 5 (someone please correct me if I'm wrong on that number). They also want 30 players that can squat 500 pounds and Coach Hicks said they have 2.

We have 2 spots left. We are looking for a grad transfer RB and a grad transfer ILB. For those schollies to count toward the 2020 allotment, they need to be filled by April 1st. I wouldn't be shocked to see us possibly still pick up a grad transfer or two once spring ball ends and guys from other schools end up not happy about where they stand on the depth chart and enter the transfer portal.

I am excited to watch those running backs though. Both could be special.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Noa end up redshirting next season, actually. I think we're still going pretty hard after a grad transfer or JC running back. If we can land the right guy I think you'll see Noa or Gentry maybe redshirt.

Also, there's still plenty of time to bring in grad transfers. After spring ball there will be even more out there and we can still address the RB, DL, & WR need this spring/summer.

Noa seems to have the more D1-ready body.

Gentry is D1 ready. 5'10" 195. He's only about 5 lbs lighter than Noa. Noa also missed almost all of last year with an injury so he will be working back into football shape. I honestly doubt either of them red shirt. Unless we pick up a super star grad transfer or JC guy, they will both be in the rotation with Warren as the third back. There is also a good chance you see Gentry lined up as a slot receiver on occasion. He played there quite a bit in high school and has really good hands and runs solid routes for a running back. Either way in Reeder's offense I can easily see 3 running backs getting plenty of touches.
