Came across a gem today
Imagine how the forum would have reacted to this game had it existed at the time:

Re: Came across a gem today
This game certainly has been referenced on this site and the old sites a number of times. Less, and I mean ALOT Less than That, gets this board riled up. There may have been the old rivals board back then.
One mass board reaction I did miss since it was the year before I started reading two or three boards ago was the reaction to the 2002 BYU Blown Lead, so I have had to fill in for myself the board reaction to that.

What also didn't exist at the time was the USU Football Twitter Page to tweet Danilo's five sacks, and give him the opportunity to do something as simple as click "retweet" and take a lot of criticism for doing it. We'll never know if he would or would not have if social media existed back then.

Yes he was. We had quite a run of quality backs with Abu, Demario Brown, and Emmett White.

We also had Melvin Blue in that era. Not on their level but I remember thinking we had quite the run of backs with a color for their last name.

Last year, just across the bay in Oakland between the Lions and the Raiders, there were flashbacks of that and three other things on the last drive alone.

Melvin Blue was actually a very good running back, he just had the misfortune of being stuck behind two of the all-time greats in Abu and Demario.Intermeddler wrote: ↑June 1st, 2020, 8:16 pmWe also had Melvin Blue in that era. The thing I remember most about Melvin Blue is playing dunk ball with him on the basketball courts at Adams School.Intermeddler wrote: ↑June 1st, 2020, 8:16 pmWe also had Melvin Blue in that era. John Ralston
I didn’t realize that John Ralston finished his career as the SJSU coach. As many will know, Ralston is a College Football Hall of Fame coach and started his head coaching career at USU from 1959-1962. Those were the Aggie glory days that still might be unmatched with Merlin Olsen and two conference championships.
I’m also not sure why I didn’t hear that he died last September. I might have been out of the country at the time.

I imagine that was the case because it was talked about here on the board.dogie wrote: ↑June 2nd, 2020, 12:10 amI didn’t realize that John Ralston finished his career as the SJSU coach. Re: Came across a gem today
It was kind of a staple of John L. Smith's teams to lack discipline on the field. He actually had some pretty talented players, but they did have a tendency to collectively make errors at the wrong times, which cost them some games.
He was a hot coaching commodity for a while, but he has fallen lots. Ended up declaring bankruptcy due to bad real estate investments and had some major gaffes as Arkansas's interim coach. (Not too mention how he handled Weber State's coaching exit.)
He ended up getting fired at Kentucky State, a D-II school, after a 0-10 season. He was a finalist to take over the job after Brent Guy was fired in 2008. There was a push to bring him back from some, but Gary Andersen got the job instead. In retrospect that was likely the right call.

I was actually told that John L. was going to get the job and that it was all his, right up until Coach Andersen interviewed.NowhereLandAggie wrote: ↑June 2nd, 2020, 1:57 pmIt was kind of a staple of John L. Re: Came across a gem today
As I watched Melvin Blue play, the more snaps he took the better he got. I recall he was a very physical player and enjoyed being able to deliver a blow in heavy traffic. Seems to me he was in a tough spot with not quite enough game time reps to emerge as the talent he was. Good running back days back then with Wilson, Blue, White and Brown.

Re: Came across a gem today
Melvin Blue actually holds the 15th best rushing yardage game in school history after he ran for 224 yards against Idaho while filling in for the injured Demario Brown.NavyBlueAggie wrote: ↑June 2nd, 2020, 3:53 pmAs I watched Melvin Blue play, the more snaps he took the better he got. Re: Came across a gem today
Good get 22. I believe I was at that game and noted the more reps he took the better he played. Melvin Blue may have been recruited by USC but it seemed he would have more playing time at USU and that's how we came to enjoy his playing talents.aggies22 wrote: ↑June 2nd, 2020, 4:34 pmMelvin Blue actually holds the 15th best rushing yardage game in school history after he ran for 224 yards against Idaho while filling in for the injured Demario Brown.NavyBlueAggie wrote: ↑June 2nd, 2020, 3:53 pmAs I watched Melvin Blue play, the more snaps he took the better he got. I think that this was the game where John L. blurted out on the radio after the game, "We were just too stupid to win."
One of the all time great John L. quotes!

Re: Came across a gem today
That wouldn't be the last time he would scream over a field goal attempt with time running out in the half. There was a time while he was at Michigan State he yelled at a reporter that the coaches were screwing it up after they kicked a field goal with 10 guys and had it blocked and returned.AggiesForever wrote: ↑June 9th, 2020, 12:36 pmI think that this was the game where John L. blurted out on the radio after the game, "We were just too stupid to win."
