They have a lot more money to weather this storm than USU does. If they have to cancel football for a year, they are still in a viable position as an independent. If this disruption (coronavirus shutdown stuff) continues past the 2020-21 year, it could get ugly for a lot of schools.

A ace that YBU has is all their facilities all paid for before construction starts. They have no debt.

BYU is in a lot better spot than most schools. They can weather this storm better than most. That is assuming the general authorities of the LDS church are willing to keep piling money into the program with an extended shutdown due to coronavirus. The reality is that most universities will not be able to handle an extended time without revenue from football primarily, but also basketball. If football and basketballs is not played this year than USU as well as most athletic programs are completely hosed.

Maybe they should just cancel their football program. Save the headache!

And that fiscal responsibility is one area where yBU outshines probably every other program in the country and could be the one thing that saves its athletic department. Overspending by most athletic departments, especially among P5 programs, will cause a lot of financial stress at those schools. Hopefully our accountant AD helped put us in decent shape over the last couple of years.

Football season is doomed and not just for the NCAA. I only have some confidence that the NFL will play. That's about it.

Yeah probably no fans at all, but if there somehow is fans it will probably just be students or big donors towards the program unfortunately.

I think that we should get 2 games in the season with the cougs. It would be cool for both fan bases to have games in Logan and Provo to make up for the crazy stuff that is happening. We got both screwed, and it would help both schools to get past this mess.

Is BYU going to single handedly keep the MWC afloat? USU has one of, if not the, smallest football budgets in the conference and we need at least one money game and a respectable home attendance to balance the books. We have lost the money game and if they limit attendance, I see USU football operating in the red by a long way this year. I doubt BYU can bail them out of that. It wonder if it makes more financial sense to not play?

USU has one of, if not the, smallest football budgets in the conference and we need at least one money game and a respectable home attendance to balance the books. The problem is if we don't play at least a conference schedule we lose the tv money which I think is like 3-4MM. BYU is home and home so playing away this year is not a money maker.

Not saying it won't happen, as we all know news changes very quickly these days. However, according to this article yesterday, the idea of adding BYU to the MWC schedule this year has not been discussed.

How? Is BYU sharing their ESPN revenue? Our conference contract doesn’t get any sweeter with additional games on TV. And half the teams would spend MORE money by traveling to Provo. It’s not like they can sell more tickets to the BYU game.

It could be an espn thing. Espn is telling us to add them for tv purposes.

ESPN will be in a world of financial hurt if there is no college football. They aren't going to be able to pay any more for MWC- BYU games. I doubt there will be a lot of interest in this Orlando NBA tournament and ESPN had alienated a good chunk if their viewers by making it a political tournament more than a basketball tournament. Their days may be numbered.

If BYU would like to have a 2020 football season, they should abandon independence and return to the mountain west for all sports. Period. If not, rot in hell, cougies.

We’re all screwed for the 2020 season. This is just the first domino to fall before football is cancelled altogether.
