Our Offense Going Forward

Post by AggieUprising50 » July 19th, 2020, 9:10 pm

If the rumors that DHC is transferring here comes true, I have a lot of hope for this offense.

Our run game has the potential to be elite. We have a true thunder and lightning combination at RB, all 5 offensive lineman returning, 3 receivers who can run the jet sweep effectively, and a freak athlete at QB. Teams are going to have to respect that, and hopefully stack the box.

This would help create more one on one match-ups with our WR's. Last year our guys had to go up against defenses that would drop 7-8 every play. That made it hard for people to get open. If teams stack the box and sell out to stop the run, we should be able to get more open receivers than we did last year. Scarver and Thompkins have the speed, Nathan has the route running and quickness, and Mcgriff will win the jump balls.

If Shelly can do a decent job passing the ball, and our o-line can take the next step forward, we could turn some heads this year.

Also, say goodbye to 40 second 3 and outs. :utah: :state:

I am happy about avoiding 40 second 3 and outs.

Hopefully the rest all comes together! Hopefully there is a season!

I personally see Shelly over Peasley, but either way we’ll have a freak athlete at Qb who will force defenses to stack the box.

Offense will be balanced for sure whichever QB steps-up to lead the pack and with that running game(power/speed), experienced O-line from what I am reading/hearing, WR's that have length on outside now and then some very fast, shifty experienced slots inside..and don't forget you have mix-depth at TE of blocking and athletic TE's as well (that create mis-matches and helps give RB's and WR's more space when safeties and LB's are worried about TE's who catch/run - well I may a little biased there lol)...

I think it's easy to look at Utah's offense and assume because GA was recently at Utah, that's what the offense will look like. I think a more apt comparison is 2011 and 2012. 2011 was a really good year for us offensively even if we turned conservative late in games. We had multiple TE sets, shifts, motion and a really balanced attack that featured the run. 2012 we got even more balanced with one feature back. @aggies22 , what do you know about the new OC and what hints at what the new offensive scheme does that provide?

I've said in previous threads that I expect a return to the offensive style of 2011 and 2012. I think that the personnel that we currently have and are recruiting points exactly to that. We now have a collection of true-dual threat QBs, a VERY solid group of RB's, a speedster at the slot, a big target WR outside and a possession guy lined up on the opposite side, we have several multi-dimensional TEs but I expect this group to get better next year and a young group of offensive linemen that will only continue to get better.

I still worry about our lack of quality outside receivers. We desperately missed having jump-ball receivers last year. I'm not sure we have really addressed that. Thin at best.

The WR group is an area of concern. 2012 we didn't blow the world away with receivers but we had several solid guys. Austin for jump balls, Jacobs the speedy guy, and TVL for possession.

I think we have some potential in our wr group, just not a lot of experience and returning production outside of Nathan and DT and Scarver. I think Ajani, Wright, and McGriff could be contributors. Should be a serviceable group. There may be a few others that could surprise as well. I feel better about our receivers this year than I did last year at this point. We did have Mariner and Repp but they were relative unknowns. Hopefully we have a few step up, which I think we will.

I think we'll see a lot of Ajani Carter due to his ability to block

Like I mentioned before, if we can establish a solid run game, teams will have to stack the box. Which will create more one-on-one match-ups for our receivers, thus increasing their chance of getting open.

If that's the comparison, I'll throw this at you guys.

The role of Matt Austin played by Justin McGriff.
The role of Travis Van Leeuwen played by Jordan Nathan.
The role of Chuck Jacobs played by Deven Thompkins.
The role of DJ Tialavea played by Travis Boman.
The role of Kellen Bartlett played by Carson Terrell.

Yeah but which RB is slow enough to play the role of Kerwynn?

So is what people are saying is when we are 3rd and a few yards that we will have the option to both run and pass. Last year on 3rd and a few yards I had zero confidence running the ball especially from the shot gun and the slow hand off. Be nice to sustain drives some drive by converting 3rd and short.

Can we find a way to use Peasley's speed on offense even if he isn't QB1?

Maybe I read that wrong!! I thought the OP was saying that we have the option to run or PASS and I was saying the person that was thrown to on the pass on 3rd and short was JORDAN (my #1 favorite person)

I'm sorry! I was just giving you a hard time. Jordan often was the target on 3rd down pass attempts. My poor attempt at some humor.
