Matt Wells is an idiot
Driving with 3 minutes left down 9 and he kicks a field goal on 2nd and 4. And misses.

What the......??? Wells may have just sealed his fate today too.
Anybody else watching TT? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a call like that in my life. Down by 9. 3 minutes left. Colombi driving down the field. 3 timeouts. Wells elects to kick a field goal on 2nd and 4 from the 20. And they miss it.
What in the crap????????

Haha, my exact thought was “Wow, if I’m a tech fan I want him fired after he just did that.”

What?! That is even worse than the fabled 3rd down punt from USU.

I'm also watching the game. The announcers were perplexed. I don't miss those late-game bizarre decisions at all.
Also, to beat this dead horse even harder, did we seriously let Colombi leave for...Shelley?

Some idiot I talked to said that Colombi was on his way out, and that's why they brought in Shelley, but I'm not buying in.

I forgot to mention tech had made zero field goals in its first six games, so it's not like it was automatic anyway from 37 yards.

THe only time you do that is if there is like 30 seconds to go in order to give yourself an onside/hail mary chance. WIth 3 minutes to go on the 20 and 2nd down you go for a TD. I like Wells, but those are decisions that seal can seal your fate.

The thing that makes me the most mad still is that we lost out on 3 years of Henry so Gary could bring in his guy and then get fired 3 games later.

Re: What the......??? Wells may have just sealed his fate today too.
I can see the rationale. You need a touchdown and a field goal. If you don't want to onside kick, get the 3 as soon as possible. You then have plenty of time to kick deep, hold them (even gives you a cushion if you give up a first down), get a punt deep on your half, and drive the length of the field. Not as absurd as every is making it.

Well in that case shouldn't Jordan give half of his 6.5MM signing bonus to Wells? I am pretty sure that Jordan had 0 FBS offers aside from USU.

When you're inside the amount of time left that corresponds to remaining timeouts, i.e. 2 mins, kicking a field goal is a viable option. Not absurd. But you are better served to at least wait until 4th down. Tcu was gassed at the time.

Re: Matt Wells is an idiot
I watched this game from start to finish and this may have taken the cake as the biggest bonehead call of Wells' career and that is really saying something! They were driving the field with 10 to 25 yard chunks every play and then all of a sudden Colombi looks around and seems confused as to why in the middle of this great hurried drive that had TCU on their heels he was being waved of the field on 2nd and 4. You're basically at the 20 yard line with the clock stopped, all three timeouts in your pocket, and are marching toward cutting the lead to 2 points and Wells pulls this decision out of his (I can't express myself without swearing). I have seen a coach's decision directly lead to losing games before (several from Wells) but this was on another level.
That poor kicker was probably just sitting over there watching this great drive by his team and then was all of a sudden he was told to scurry on to the field to kick a must make 37-yarder to extend the game for his team. At least let the pressure on the kicker come from the clock or natural end to the game, why place all this pressure on your kicker unnecessarily? Wells should be let go based on this decision alone.
On a side note, it sure was nice watching Colombi extend plays with his legs and rifle accurate passes all over the field. His arm is so much better than anything we have seen so far and his legs are about equal. His ability to keep his eyes down field and deliver the ball is really good. Too bad he had so many drops by his WR's today....he dropped some bombs right in their lap a couple of times and they plain dropped them.

Wells is always trying to be over-clever. It's second down. Throw the ball twice.

Re: What the......??? Wells may have just sealed his fate today too.
I have no problem with him kicking a field goal, but not on 2nd down. Go for the TD 2 more times and if you don't get it, then you kick it. Getting a TD means the next time you get the ball, you have 35 yards less that you have to gain.ChowderAggie wrote: ↑November 7th, 2020, 6:17 pmOh, it’s every bit as absurd as Twitter is currently expressing.AgMac wrote: ↑November 7th, 2020, 5:52 pmI can see the rationale. Re: What the......??? Wells may have just sealed his fate today too.
With 3 timeouts and only needing a field goal if you score the 20-30 second difference is negligible. His kicker was also 1-5 on the year. If preserving every second was the biggest concern 2 shots to o the end zone take 10 seconds. It made no sense in any football scenario.ChowderAggie wrote: ↑November 7th, 2020, 6:17 pmOh, it’s every bit as absurd as Twitter is currently expressing.AgMac wrote: ↑November 7th, 2020, 5:52 pmI can see the rationale. He didn't seem to consider that if the plan was to go ahead and go for the TD on the next possession then you are gambling that at some point on that drive you are going to be closer than the 20 with this down and distance remaining? and the time left to attack anywhere on the field without clock issues? The opportunity to put in the endzone was really good and he decided to sell that chance down the river for the opportunity at an unknown distance and time to score a TD later?

Re: What the......??? Wells may have just sealed his fate today too.
It would even be more defensible if they had, say first down at the one with a sack backing them up to 2nd and 15 from the 20, hurting their chances of the TD on that drive. But you keep going when you have the momentum from a 6 yard gain on first down.AgMac wrote: ↑November 7th, 2020, 5:52 pmI can see the rationale. You need a touchdown and a field goal.
