Our Defense

Haha Air Force has more throwing yards than us this game...that’s awesome...about to double their season’s total passing yards...

That's kind of the story this year. Start out well, get some hope. Then quickly proceed to fall off a cliff into the bottomless pit.

The defense was terrible, but I'm more bothered by 7 points on offense than giving up 35 on defense.

A bad all around game. Reminded me of the game against them last year where it was a blowout, but it felt even worse since their offense moved the ball all night at ease.

What defense. Didn’t see any from blue team tonight. Pathetic!

Reminds me of the defenses during the Guy era. Just gashed on every play.

My question is this, are we deficient in talent or is our scheme for handling an odd offense ineffective?

I'm no expert, but I did stay at .... sorry. I think there may be some talent lacking, but I think it's more bad scheme/coaching, inexperience, physical strength and mentality.

Yes
USU out at least 6 slated starters on defense since camp started and was playing the number 1 rushing team in the country. It's fun to have some of the young guys play but if you're not a P5, the majority of your young guys still haven't had enough time in your development program. That's the reality

I second this my Aggie brother. Not having spring ball, no summer strength and conditioning program and constantly being told there would NOT be a 2020 season severely hampered the growth of a program that is the 6th youngest FBS program in the country. There is still a lot of growth and development that needs to occur.

Our Defense

Post by AGGIEinIOWA » December 4th, 2020, 9:37 am

Yeah, once I saw AJ Carter, Luke Marion, and Kaleo Neves all getting significant time on defense I knew we must be getting pretty thin. I think they will all develop into good players but playing them now is probably ahead of when we originally anticipated due to loosing all the transfers. Especially when AJ is supposed to be a wr. I think Marion was supposed to have the pitch man on several of those big plays.

I was pleasantly surprised with Tim Patrick Jr. I thought he made some nice plays at wr there in the 4th qtr.

didn't the tv through up a stat that air force has about the 3rd highest number of new starters this year than last year. I'm curious where we are in that picture.

They did, the difference is "new starters" and "wasn't expected to contribute this year"

Couple of problems on defense I have observed this season. We like to play zone a lot but the entire back 7 of veteran guys do a piss poor job of recognizing routes. They play like 8th graders, well this is my zone. You have a zone but you have to recognize the routes and then man up with that guy until you pass it over. So metz is by far the biggest culprit of playing a terrible job of this. He never looks for routes only at the QB. He should have had easily 5 picks this year if he would move his dang head away from the QB to see a route coming in behind him and drop and weave that way. That is why the middle of the field 10-15 is always open because he sits at 7 and never moves with the routes laterally. That is problem makes it hard for the safeties because now they play their deep stuff shorter because those routes all always getting completed and those go for big yards. We need to have inside backers that now how to zone drop since we are playing so much zone with those backers. The other big problem is our dang corners. Their route recognition when playing off coverage is terrible. Surely we have someone maybe not as talented but more disciplined that can do better. I would prefer to play someone that can defend 90% of all the passes but will be burned on a deep go route rather than play someone that can only defend 15% of the route tree but is capable of defending the long bomb. Probably should have went into coaching after this post

I have no idea how many 1st time starts there have been each game. Since "camp", USU has lost both starting CB's, Starting Safety, LBs, and a DL. There's probably more that I'm not thinking of
