Post by usubullzone » April 11th, 2021, 3:37 pm

Do you think this team could do good this season?

Yes, depending on your definition of good. I think we’ll exceed projections and possibly make a bowl game.

Defense is going to take a big step up this year. Stilll think we need to figure out the dbs but our front 7 should be very improved.

Just the energy on this team, regarding their tweets, is fantastic. I believe GA was a dead beat hire. I wouldn't have made that statement at the time of his hiring, but from the course of his second round of coaching here, it is truth. Feel like we've taken a huge step forward.
I'd go for a 7-6 season or better.

I think we’ll go somewhere in the 13-1 or 14-0 range depending on whether or not we win our NY6 game against Oregon.

I feel like 7-5 or 6-6 would be a good season. Especially after last year.

My optimistic bet on the season is that we go 7-6. You can pick if that means winning the bowl game or losing it.

I don't see us beating Washington State, San Jose State, Boise State or BYU. I think the rest of the season is very winnable but I don't expect us to go undefeated in those 8 games but do expect a winning record in those 8. I think we have a hard floor at 4 wins and a hard cap at 8 wins (not counting bowl game).

I don't think our problems last year were so much skill (outside of the QB) as they were attitude and coaching. I think those issues are resolved with coach Anderson. I also think we added skill.

I think we win 8 including at Washington State.

I set my bar at six regular season wins. Anything below that will be disappointing. Anything above that will be great. Our program should always be in the running for a bowl game.

WSU is being picked to finish last in their division. It would still be a huge upset for us to win that game but I think it may be closer than folks expect. After watching San Jose get clubbed by Ball State I’m not sure what to expect from them. We play them late in the season and we may have our new schemes mastered by then. Starkel is good but he’s prone to throw to the other team at times. BYU loses a lot. They’ll still be favored but you don’t lose that many players to the NFL and not see a drop off. Boise is breaking in a new coach and who knows how that will go. Their DC is a holdover but OC is and HC are new. I’m glad we have Blake Anderson rather than Avalos.

Everybody has got a whole lot of film on San Joser now. No surprises. Plenty of time to gameplan against offensive tendencies. I just don't believe they'll have eight wins this fall. I see them winning six, possibly seven, and probably getting a bowl game by the skin of their teeth.

I agree - but I don't believe the team has much depth in a lot of areas and already lots of injuries in the spring. In football you can pretty much guarantee injuries. I believe the coaching staff is a huge upgrade and the team should look much better but as we have all heard players make plays and I still think the team needs more upgrade in talent and depth issues could play a big part in the season

I'm pretty concerned about the QB situation. Hopefully Bonner heals up well and can be a full participant in fall camp. And hopefully he is adequate or better.

Considering we two straight losing seasons has me concerned. Last year really doesn't count though, but I think 6-6 (6-7 or 7-6 if we get invited to a BG) is probably attainable.

In regards to the spring injuries I think they’re all just very precautionary and once those dudes get going in our strength program I anticipate that we’ll have the whole roster available for fall camp...and prepared to play football this year...which will be a nice change from last year

I agree, I am hopeful Bonner is a good replacement, but the most important position in football is the QB. I am hopeful that i will be pleasantly surprised, but it is for sure a concern.

If we get healthy and get good QB play I think we can get to a bowl.

If we get QB play like last year or only a little better, I’d guess 3-9.

4-8. We show big improvement(how could we not), but we still got a ways to go. Would love for the more optimistic predictions to be right, but I think it will take Anderson some time to right the ship.

Luckily we still play in the MWC. We'll be better than 4-8

I think the Aggie talent is fine and they just brought in maybe the best LB in the MW. The season will depend on the health of Bonner, the O-line, and how much the secondary has improved (and is coached) in that order. If things fall into place with the Aggies MW schedule 8 wins should be the expectation. The program is not that down and the schedule it not that tough.

However if their are qb and O-line health issues and the Aggies are not better in both individual and unit coverages it will be rough.

I think our depth could be a real problem if we have the typical number of injuries. Seems like we have done a decent job filling some critical skill issues but not much behind our front line. Given that I think 6-6 would be a good achievement for a new coaching staff.

Who do we play next year that we are clearly better than? North Dakota, UNLV and New Mexico, but even there New Mexico and UNLV are both road games and not gimmees. We have a long way to go after the debacle of last year. This isn't going to be an overnight turnaround.

Everyone needs to tamp down their expectations. With all things considered I would consider 4 or 5 wins this year a successful season. It will take a few years to get back to winning records.

We are clearly better than New Mexico State as well. We have no reason to lose any of those 4 games. UNLV, NM, and NMSU are 3 of the 10 worst teams in the country. ND is probably better than them actually.

While I don’t take a lot away from last year, I still can see that Air Force and Fresno were the worst losses on the schedule, and they happened after the head coach was fired and the dumpster was fully engulfed in flames. We didn’t play the bottom half the conference due to COVID vs Wyoming and the Colorado State debacle. Last year was as bad as Brent Guy years, but I don’t think the climb back to respectable football is as difficult as you make it out to be. The schedule is as easy as it has ever been. San Jose is projected to be third hardest game for 2021 by ESPN FPI (although I would rank it Boise, Washington State, BYU). Even Gary Andersen 1.0 went 4-8 in 2009.

@ Wazzu (probable loss)
UND (probable win)
@ AFA (probable loss)
Boazy (probable loss)
yBu (probable loss)
@ Vegas (probable win)
CSU (tossup)
Hawai'i (tossup)
@ NewMags (probable win)
@ San Joser (tossup)
Wyoming (tossup)
@ UNM (probable win)

I believe our floor is 4 wins (Lobos and Vegas are roadies, but still both very winnable).

As for the rest:

Road tossup: San Joser, I believe USU wins; too much film of too many people dragging the then formerly high-flying Spartans down into the dirt, so long as our defensive backfield can deal with island living.

Home tossups: CSU, Hawai'i, and Wyoming; I think USU takes two of those, but not all three unless something miraculous happens.

Probable losses: I don't see a win there, even under miraculous conditions.

I thus arrive at 6-7 wins, with 8 being the absolute ceiling with USU stealing one of the probable losses (with two at home and Wazzu so depleted, I suppose it's conceivable that a single steal might happen).

6-6 or 7-5 is achievable.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
