Wells P5 Coaches Ranking
Wells was ranked 60 out of 65 among P5 coaches by CBS Sports. Not great, but he's making a ton of money, so things could be worse for him.

I like Matt. I felt like he did a good job here. But this isn't a huge surprise to me.

He's a good guy, I remember him fondly when I knew him back in the day, I wish him all the best and all of the success in the world.

Re: Wells P5 Coaches Ranking
Wells was a mid-level MWC coach. In P5, he's in trouble.
Recruiting is not his strength, and then his game management is terrible. In one score games he almost always finds a way to blow it.
I'm curious as to where he ends up when TT fires him this year.

He got his payday. Texas Tech is a really difficult place to win though. Tubberville won in the SEC and couldn't win there. Kingsbury got an NFL job despite failing there. Maybe one time rumored Aggie coach Graham Harrell will have more success, but I doubt much more.

1. Is it easier to win Logan vs Lubbock due to competition really?
2. If you were trying to get to a more winnable p5 opportunity would it be better to stay at a mw level school and wait or jump to a hard to win p5 opportunity and hope you win?
3. It probably doesn’t matter either way. If you get $18M you take it.

Matt's a good guy. He's stubborn, which hurt him here; but John helped him with that a bit...to me, it's a big leap to P5, and I'm not sure he was quite done cooking here...

Agree Vi, I'd love to see him be successful. I was in Lubbock recently. Ahhhh, he's got his work cut out.

What are you saying? What did the post say that was wrong? A level headed criticism of an ex coach makes you a "cheap seat fan"? Odd.

Matt is celebrating his low ranking in Cache Valley this week. He was golfing at the Country Club yesterday with Blake and is going to the Jazz game tonight.

15M provides you with a lot of opportunities to celebrate. You really don't need a reason at that point.

Re: Wells P5 Coaches Ranking
You can't argue with success, and Matt had more success at USU than he had failure. So there is that...

Yep. Offensive Coordinator for the great 2012 season and then three great seasons as HC. Hard to argue against him when no other coach in the past 40 years has had his success.

Really with the exception from about the middle of the 2015 season to the middle of the 2017 season we were pretty damn good under Wells.

Honest question: where does Matt Wells rank on the all-time USU coaching list? It's certainly not outside the top 5. He's an alumni who was quite successful here as a coach, he represented the university with pure class, and he left in just about the best way possible. So why do so many board members feel the need to constantly take shots at him?

It was obvious in the 2018 season, Matt was riding the coattails of Gary Andersen’s recruits, so let’s not be giving him too much credit.stang wrote: ↑May 26th, 2021, 9:21 pmHonest question: where does Matt Wells rank on the all-time USU coaching list? Well, here's the coaches that I'd put ahead of Wells in a reverse chronological order.stang wrote: ↑May 26th, 2021, 9:21 pmHonest question: where does Matt Wells rank on the all-time USU coaching list? Dick Romney
Chuck Mills
Gary Andersen 1.0
So yes, Matt Wells is certainly within the top 5. The list of USU head football coaches is not very illustrious though if we are being honest.

^^ This is my feeling too. I thought Wells was a good guy, just not charismatic to the public/media, which not all people are (myself included).slcagg wrote: ↑May 26th, 2021, 9:39 pm100% agree. I thought he’d have struggles at the P5 coaching level but I do hope he’s successful in his career and I’m glad he was our coach here and got some awesome wins (2014 BYU and 2015 Boise in particular).

Wells brought us 2 wins in Provo right? I'll always appreciate that. Having said that I originally estimated he'd have a 3 year stint in Lubbock and that's exactly what I think will play out. He can fall asleep at night on a pillow filled with money.

John L Smith had some really competitive teams at Utah State (especially with the lack of resources), and did really well at Louisville - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_L._Smith
