Scarver Return
Cool to see him tie the record in front of his family and his friends. Shout out to his blockers, I think it was DT making the block that made it happen. Looked like an offensive line on the left:
First 3 guys over run the play and get too far up field, Tompkins blocks the one guy, other than the kicker, that could make the play (maybe holds, his hands are wrapped around the guy at one point ):
Scarver only had to beat the kicker:
which he does :
Great execution! Now how do we get the rest of the team to do it?

Re: Scarver Return
I was really glad Scarver got this one. I was convinced that he wouldn't get another one because teams were kicking away from him or were super aware of him.Aggie19 wrote: βOctober 17th, 2021, 7:30 amCool to see him tie the record in front of his family and his friends. Love watching coach Anderson running up the sideline in excitement.

Re: Scarver Return
I am guessing there are a number of schools that probably don't have 7 total kick return TDs in the past 20 years. I have no idea if anyone keeps track of such things, but I wonder how far you would have to go back to get 7 for each FBS school.

Scarver Return
As soon as he catches the ball, it looks like Thompkins puts his hand up as if to tell him not to go for it. Am I seeing things?

No way that shouldn't have been run out and it was as beautifully blocked as you will see.Yossarian wrote: βOctober 21st, 2021, 1:13 pmNo - he's saying "follow me".andytheaggie wrote: βOctober 21st, 2021, 12:51 pmAs soon as he catches the ball, it looks like Thompkins puts his hand up as if to tell him not to go for it. On a side note I am flumoxxed by the number of fair catches taken on kickoffs within a few yards front of the 25 yard line this year when Teams kick it short for Scarver. Every one is an easy 10-15 yards in field position gain and what upback in his life doesn't get excited about getting the ball. If someone is directing them to to fair catch the ball in those cases they need to be fired.

Re: Scarver Return
On the coaches show Scarver mentioned that Thompkins will generally turn around and let him know if he should or should not return it. It was something to that affect anyways. I am guessing that Thompkins in this instance was telling him to run it out.hickaggie wrote: βOctober 21st, 2021, 1:51 pmNo way that shouldn't have been run out and it was as beautifully blocked as you will see.Yossarian wrote: βOctober 21st, 2021, 1:13 pmNo - he's saying "follow me".andytheaggie wrote: βOctober 21st, 2021, 12:51 pmAs soon as he catches the ball, it looks like Thompkins puts his hand up as if to tell him not to go for it. Re: Scarver Return
I am sure he was telling him to go. There is no way you would not see a good return opportunity unfolding. Unless its 5-6 yard deep at least I'm not sure why you would ever tell him not to go for it anyway.Aggie84025 wrote: βOctober 21st, 2021, 2:06 pmOn the coaches show Scarver mentioned that Thompkins will generally turn around and let him know if he should or should not return it. Re: Scarver Return
Typically, a shorter kick is also a much higher kick on purpose to allow defenders more time to get downfield. Plus, it interrupts blocking assignments. So, no guarantee they will do much better than the 25.hickaggie wrote: βOctober 21st, 2021, 1:51 pmNo way that shouldn't have been run out and it was as beautifully blocked as you will see.Yossarian wrote: βOctober 21st, 2021, 1:13 pmNo - he's saying "follow me".andytheaggie wrote: βOctober 21st, 2021, 12:51 pmAs soon as he catches the ball, it looks like Thompkins puts his hand up as if to tell him not to go for it. Prediction: Scarver will break the NCAA record with another 2 TD returns against NMSU.

Re: Scarver Return
That is the intent but its still not a punt and as far as I could see from the film on those kicks there was no need to fair catch the ball and at least 2 if I recall were ahead of the 25 yard line so the fair catch can be nothing but an abomination to the game of football itself. The fair catch rule advance to the 25 on kickoffs was a ridulous concession to the pansies in the first place, but not returning a kickoff you have space to catch on or past or the 25 is just disgusting. Like I said its probably 10 yard minimum for a TE or receiver upback with the possibility to break at tackle and start closer to midfield. If you don't have room to catch the ball or its in 15 yard range it might be different.FloridaAggie13 wrote: βOctober 21st, 2021, 3:11 pmTypically, a shorter kick is also a much higher kick on purpose to allow defenders more time to get downfield. Re: Scarver Return
That's assuming that NMSU scores at least once...in order to get 2 kickoff return opportunities. I think our defense will likely provide.BigBlueDart wrote: βOctober 21st, 2021, 4:24 pmPrediction: Scarver will break the NCAA record with another 2 TD returns against NMSU.

Re: Scarver Return
We could get a safety. Although that begs the question, would a TD return on a free kick count as a kickoff return for the record?USUFAN5 wrote: βOctober 22nd, 2021, 9:17 amThat's assuming that NMSU scores at least once...in order to get 2 kickoff return opportunities.
