Matt or Blake
Given the choice do you take Matt Wells (includes Columbi) or Blake Anderson as the coach for Utah State moving forward. I have read from a number of posters that we did not appreciate what Wells did while at USU (guilty as charged) so just interested to hear if you would rather have him or Coach Anderson moving forward. I personally could not be happier with our current coaching situation.

Re: Matt or Blake
I am a fan of Matt and appreciate what he did here. That being said, he chose to move on and I support Blake and his staff now.

Re: Matt or Blake
The program is in such a different state than when Matt took over. Blake is the right guy for the current state.

Re: Matt or Blake
Matt was a great coach for us, but I like Blake's in-game coaching much more.

Re: Matt or Blake
Easiest question ever.
I don’t care about Texas tech. I do care about usu. Matt coaches TT. Blake coaches USU.
Therefore Blake.

Blake!
I can appreciate what Wells did for the program, but won’t say that I am sad to see him gone.

Re: Matt or Blake
I haven’t watched TT since he left so I’m not sure if he’s evolved in his coaching but he was sometimes painfully conservative in his 4th down decisions and general philosophy. Blake has been refreshingly smart on going for it and we’ve scored a bunch of points after 4th down conversions.
I also like Blake because he somehow came with an extra $1,000,000 to hire a staff

In my opinion we are 3 wins away from Coach Anderson being in the race for National Coach of the Year.

Re: Matt or Blake
And does Matt Wells make it through the year?
Matt was good for us when he was here, leveraged the job to get a “dream” job in Lubbock. Fine.
Matt’s game management is horrible his recruitment is questionable and his ability to put talented assistants around him is borderline criminal. Those are really the three major functions of a HC.

Re: Matt or Blake
Great criteria. Regarding Blake and his staff. I feel the best quality of this current staff is ability to recruit (and that will take a few years to develop). Then he got a steal in the s&c coach in Paul Jackson. May be the most important assistant.Sl7vk wrote: ↑October 24th, 2021, 8:20 amAnd does Matt Wells make it through the year?

We can probably have both next year when Blake hires his pal to be the TE coach after he's fired from TTU.

Re: Matt or Blake
Can I be happy with both of them? Matt was a great coach for his time here as well as being an Alumni of USU. Blake so far as exceeded all of our expectations.

I think Blake is a good coach and will do good things (and already has). That said, Matt took us to five bowl games in six years. Once Blake does that we can have this conversation.

Re: Matt or Blake
With how well Blake's first season is going, I doubt he's around long enough to even try.
Re: Matt or Blake
Blake.
The way the Rams handled that final field goal attempt reeked of Matt Wells 4th quarter mishaps.
IMO, as bad as some things seem, we currently have a coach and staff who know how to win in the final minutes of the 4th quarter.

Re: Matt or Blake
Players believe and know how to win. The current staff hasn’t been that great. BA could have used more clock down the stretch and that last mess wouldn’t have ever happened. Overall, so far better than Wells. Would you think the same if he would have called a time out on the last play? He said he thought about it

That's a good question... Glad he didn't, but had he...?Elkaggie wrote: ↑October 24th, 2021, 10:28 pmPlayers believe and know how to win. The current staff hasn’t been that great. I would still think he's above Wells. This season is a small sample size, but many Wells loses were because of poor clock management in the 4th.
Remember Wells' call not to kick a field goal before half time because of "swirling winds"?

Too soon to make a good judgement. But I am really impressed with Blake, and very happy with what he is getting out of the kids.

Re: Matt or Blake
Anderson. Wells was a good recruiter but a TERRIBLE game manager! CSU's last-minute embarrassment was eerily reminiscent of what happened a few years ago under Wells.

Re: Matt or Blake
First, forgive me. I didn't read all the comments. There are really good, knowledgeable Aggies on here. I'm not one of them.
This question is a no Brainer IMHO.
Blake far better then Wells.
Wells was left with a pretty dang good group of players, yeah he had some amazing wins for us. No Doubt. But I was never that impressed. His best season, was because a different OC was forced on him. I got the chance to live and know the Yost's well. There was a lot going on behind the scenes. Even being told to hand over play calling, it didn't happen.
Blake was left an absolutely toxic dumpster fire. Look what he had done in year 1? Unreal to me.
But again. I don't know much. Just love the Ags! And I stopped putting much energy into coaches after GA1

Youseguys remember Wells was here for 6 YEARS right? The whole “he inherited Gary’s guys” argument is pure tripe.aggiesdidwhat wrote: ↑October 25th, 2021, 12:52 pmFirst, forgive me. I didn't read all the comments. There are really good, knowledgeable Aggies on here. I'm not one of them.

Now, the argument that Gary inherited some NFL guys recruited by Brent Guy… That one actually has some merit.
