The plot thickens......

Post by aggies22 » May 11th, 2021, 2:45 pm

I've just confirmed that Cade Potter is ALREADY on campus. Also, Zee Hamoda is expected to be on campus in early June when the other players are expected to report. Everybody left town except Sean Bairstow.

Either somebody is on a different type of scholarship or that tweet about transferring super seniors counting against the 13 is incorrect. Nothing else makes sense at this point.

I'm telling you. The coaching staff thinks Horvath doesn't count against the number. (Complete speculation on my part that I probably don't actually believe.)

I'm placing my bet that Dorius isn't taking an athletic scholarship. Trying to decide how much to wager.

Maybe they think that because it doesn’t and the tweet is wrong.

Isn't there a NCAA rules compliance officer in the AD? If there is, I'm pretty sure that individual would have let the coaching staff know that Horvath counts towards the scholarship limit.

It's got to be something else.

* Coach Odom’s first meeting with Trevin Dorius *

Odom: “I really like what I’ve seen from you on film, I think you are the best walk-on we’ve got.”

Trevin: “well, you see Coach...”

Odom: “Nice to meet you too Trevin, can’t wait to get started!”

My guess is that Odom had a handshake agreement with Dorius that unless a home run recruit wanted to come here, that Odom would honor the scholarship offer from Smith. I wonder how far out of left field the Thelissen commitment was, it is possible that Odom truly thought that they were about done recruiting when he gave that interview stating how many scholarships were left and had every intention of giving one to Dorius. Then Thelissen says he wants to come here and Dorius agrees to give up his scholarship to make that happen.

Perhaps the super senior rule allows for a school to replace an outgoing (transferring) super senior with a different one? This would prevent the blue bloods from stocking up on a bunch of seniors, and seems like it would be a pretty fair compromise.

If amateur internet yokels can find out information and count scholarships, I would think that the people that get paid to do this have it under control.

Where did the info about Dorius getting a scholarship come from? My guess is one of two things: (1) Dorius didn't really get an athletic scholarship; (2) you can replace a departing super senior with another.

From a San Diego Trib article:

“An NCAA spokesperson told the Union-Tribune on Wednesday night that “the additional eligibility is only at the current school” but clarified that Thursday morning.

“The eligibility is available at another school,” the spokesperson said in a subsequent email, “but the scholarship will count against team limits. If a student-athlete stays at their current school but has exhausted eligibility, their aid doesn’t count against team limits.””

Here's my theory - Brock Miller is the super senior. Last year SHOULD have been Brock's senior year because he played in 2017-18 (got hurt five games in), 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21. The athletic department probably was going to apply for an extra (medical) year of eligibility on the backend but realized they didn't need to because of the COVID changes. Now he can't (or won't to give USU the extra scholly) and this year will be his last.

Does anyone remember that time about ten years ago when SUU scheduled a home football game before the official start of the football season? I think they had to postpone it. So, not everyone always knows all of the rules.

This makes a lot of sense if it is actually possible. The roster on the website lists his years as follows:
2017-18 SEASON (FR) 5 games
2018-19 SEASON (RS-FR) 35 games
2019-20 SEASON (SO) 34 games
2020-21 SEASON (JR) 27 games

So if the RS for 2017-18 was assumed and not already granted, then that would have made him a SR last year and a super SR this upcoming season, which given his injury history many are assuming will be his last.

This is like a revelation from above

Isn't there a NCAA rules compliance officer in the AD? If there is, I'm pretty sure that individual would have let the coaching staff know that Horvath counts towards the scholarship limit.

It's got to be something else.

You are right...Jake Garlock is a very sharp guy, and they definitely know what all the rules are.
Does anyone remember that time about ten years ago when SUU scheduled a home football game before the official start of the football season? I think they had to postpone it. So, not everyone always knows all of the rules.
I'd like to think we've got our crap together more so than SUU.

I'm not sure what SUU has to do with Jake. Whatever.
