Why were we cheering for Utah last night?
Why were we cheering for Utah last night?
Let me get this straight, we cheer for a school that wont schedule us in football, refuses to schedule a closed door scrimmage in basketball for no reason, and all signs point to a good possibility that they may have been involved in poaching one of our best players. I'm sorry but the HURD and our fans can be embarrassing some times. The Cougars have been much better to USU than the Utes lately.

Re: Why were we cheering for Utah last night?
Some of our fans have a major BYU complex.
But I agree with you. I respect BYU more than I do Utah these days. At least BYU schedules USU in every sport. I think our administration can work with Tom Holmoe at BYU, and that we get along.
In contrast, Utah and Chris Hill are complete douchebags. Their basketball coach has repeatedly tried to poach our players---which Stew confirmed. I hadn't heard that they even refused a closed door scrimmage. And we know that they refuse to play USU in football and basketball moving forward. What a joke.
Our fans need to stop acting like supporting Utah is preferable to BYU. Don't support either school. But certainly, don't cheer for Utah in any sport.

Re: Why were we cheering for Utah last night?
18usu18 and other Aggie fans making this point are making a good one. Sure most Utah fans (minus the twitter contingent) treat USU with a lot more respect and are far less obnoxious towards USU, but their administration is completely shafting USU.
Utah has scheduled a home and home football series with Fresno and Northern Illinois among other G5 schools and play road g5 games in basketball. But then they won't even play USU in a closed scrimmage. Chris Hill knows they can lose to games to USU (example in 2012) and it's a horrible look for them. So he won't schedule a thing. What he's doing hurts USU too.
BYU on the other hard, at least at the top level, has been very fair to USU. It's starting to sway my opinion a little bit.

Re: Why were we cheering for Utah last night?
I wouldn't be too hard on those fans. They were in the middle of a USU/BYU game. As an opposing fan attending a game, one is always looking for anything to dig the other team. The announcement was made and they starting cheering Utah. I don't see anything wrong with it. It's not so much supporting Utah as it is being able to cheer against the Y while at the game. Besides, there wasn't a lot to cheer about during that game as an Aggie, and now arguing over who we should hate most is unnecessary.
We've got quite a challenge coming to Logan Saturday. Hope the fans, but mainly the team, show up for it.
Go Aggies!!

Re: Why were we cheering for Utah last night?
Agree with this. While I have noticed a growing number of closet Ute fans among the Aggie faithful, which is frustrating, I don't think that's what this was. It was more of a dig at BYU during a game where they didn't have much to cheer about.snoel wrote:I wouldn't be too hard on those fans. They were in the middle of a USU/BYU game. BYU is now scheduling home-and-home with USU in football only because they desperately need November games. If that wasn't an issue, they'd still be demanding 2-for-1 deals.swishh_15 wrote:BYU on the other hard, at least at the top level, has been very fair to USU. BYU isn't big timing us because they can't. Utah is because they can. If BYU could, they would undoubtedly. I will never cheer for BYU over Utah under any circumstances. Just like Sky View and Logan will cheer for the other team over Mountain Crest (I've witnessed that a few times), USU and Utah will always cheer for the other team against BYU.

Re: Why were we cheering for Utah last night?
After 2016, our next four games with BYU will be on Conference Friday. They needed November games for '15 and '16, and we got home and homes for six years by agreeing. I think both sides realize the days of 2-for-1s are over.Servo wrote:BYU is now scheduling home-and-home with USU in football only because they desperately need November games. Re: Why were we cheering for Utah last night?
Completely agree. Utah is shafting us because they are able to. It is bad for the U, USU, and the state of Utah. But mostly it is bad for USU. Utah would rather schedule home and home agreements with Fresno and NIU, solely for the purpose of kicking USU to the ground, despite the negative impact it has on the University of Utah and the state of Utah. I think Utah is trying so hard to become a school like Ohio State or Wisconsin, virtually uncontested in the state of Utah. If BYU had been invited to the PAC12 rather than Utah, make no mistake that they would be demanding AT LEAST 2-for-1's, if not 3-for-1's or just buy-out games. At least Utah's entire fanbase isn't completely delusional and arrogant like BYU's.Servo wrote:BYU is now scheduling home-and-home with USU in football only because they desperately need November games. But, in reality, Utah is in the PAC12 and BYU is not. It has been a huge moral struggle for me, but if both teams can't lose the Vegas bowl, then I want Utah to lose. I want BYU to beat them by 60, then drop their athletics program. Then I would like to see Utah become the PAC-12 bottom-feeder we all want them to be.

Utah refuses to schedule any in-state schools, besides BYU, in basketball. I don't like Chris Hill big timing USU. Football, I can get that they only have 3 OOC games per year. But Utah boycotting scheduling USU in basketball?

Utah has become obnoxious, and the good doctor is a tool and tough to deal with, but given the state of their football and basketball teams compared to the state of ours, I think some time a part works to our benefit. I don't see us beating them in football or basketball anytime in the next decade aside from a very surprising upset. Is going 1-9 against them in both sports worth it to us? Let's get our crap together again and then call on the Utes.

Scott Barnes said that he is the one that wanted to play BYU in SLC occasionally, since many USU alums are in SLC.hipsterdoofus21 wrote:BYU demands the stupid "neutral" court game in SLC where there are still more BYU fans than Utah fans.Tetonkatest wrote:Yeah, but what about basketball?AggieVoice wrote:BYU isn't big timing us because they can't. I think you are wrong on BYU only wanting that game the Jazz arena. I think that Stew was against it, but that Barnes was the one that wanted it. But I'm not sure about our new AD's position (we rarely hear from the guy).
Yes, I think it helps us to schedule Utah in basketball every year. Utah refused to do it when they sucked, and now that they are good, I'm sure they might reconsider it.

Re: Why were we cheering for Utah last night?
Actually, I was at the last two SLC games vs. BYU and I thought it was pretty much 50/50...with USU's fans being louder. I prefer playing the in-state games on campus always, but at least we are playing them on an even rotation of Logan-Provo-SLC-repeat...as opposed to not playing at all or them demanding that we only play at their place.hipsterdoofus21 wrote: BYU demands the stupid "neutral" court game in SLC where there are still more BYU fans than Utah fans.
Speaking of SLC games, I'd like to see Duryea play one game a year in the building formerly known as the Delta Center. I think it's good for wasatch front alums, and I also think we could potentially do a home-home with a bigger program if we could arrange to play them in SLC rather than asking them to come to Logan.
I'm a reasonable man, get off my case.

Re: Why were we cheering for Utah last night?
For me, at least, I can recognize that the Ute administration has acted poorly with regard to the Aggies, but I don't really care too much about that. It really just boils down to the fans. The BYU fans are way worse than most Ute fans. I find most Ute fans to be fine. BYU fans annoy me.

I will never ever root for BYU. I root for any team they are playing including Utah. All things BYU annoy me and always will. I give them credit for what they have and do accomplish in sports. BUT.......they still will always suck. Is this an immature thing to say? Abso effing lutely!!! I don't care!

I can see why BYU doesn't mind scheduling us ...they beat us all the time.
Anyways, I still like Utah athletics more than BYU. It's their AD that no one likes. And I'm ok with us playing neither. We're in a good conference and that's where our focus should be.

Re: Why were we cheering for Utah last night?
I used to cheer for Utah over BYU but know that Utah is big timing us well I've got them at the same level. Byu used to big time us that is part of the reason I dislike them so much, but Utah had stuck in there. Now the doofus Hill is big timing us. When you think about it hating both of them is a good place to be that way you can enjoy when either team looses to the other. I personnaly think it would be funny for Utah to get beat by BYU and vice versa. I am looking forward to either of the two loosing in the upcoming bowl game.

I would have yelled 'uuuuuuuuu' on 'y' homecourt just for the sake of "cheering" their opponent. I probably would have yelled "booooooooo--grs" had it been at the 'u' homecourt.

Re: Why were we cheering for Utah last night?
There is no reason to cheer for either to be successful, assuming you are an Aggie fan. I think the cheering for Utah over BYU comes down to national perception. Deep down, Utahn's carry a sense of inferiority and longing to be accepted by outsiders. Having Utah athletics represent us by proxy is preferable than having the name of a polygamist not-racist-just-a-product-of-his-time totalitarian theocrat grabbing the headlines.
