Where were you at during the 01 Ohio State win?

Post by GameFAQSAggie » February 15th, 2016, 4:15 pm

With the board dead, here is a good discussion I like to start from time to time. Where were you at during the win over Ohio State in 2001. Here's my story, which I'm sure some of you have heard before:

I was a junior in high school, and during the first part of the game, I had Comadena's class. He intended on turning on the game and letting us watch it, but his cable went out so he settled for getting updates. Then during the second part of the game, I had gym class so I watched it in the rec center classroom where we were meeting that day. That classroom is a special place being where I was during our only tournament win.

Then that night, I went to combined Young Mens/Young women's activity which was a family home evening with a lesson. I missed the games that night to go only cause of wanting to play the game where kids guess things about their parents, then parents guess things about their kids, but was stuck there for the other stuff like the lesson they did as part of the activity. I was talking with other people about the win earlier that day and one teacher told me how he watched the game in the pit with the custodians, and the school resource officer was there, so I asked him what he did to kids sluffing to watch the game. He told me that he wasn't looking for kids sluffing, he was watching the game.

Other notable stories I remember include freakboy listening on the radio in an apartment, cdaAg being at a work meeting and turning on the game, Rabidchild being at Hillcrest Elementay where he worked as an aide, and treesap being on his mission and finding out days later when he got to the post office.

I was in an apartment on the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy listening to the game on armed forces radio out of the US Air Force base in Aviano, Italy. I was pretty happy that they decided to air that game as back then it was pretty much impossible to get the audio over the Internet.

I was home taking care of my third child, a daughter who was then three days old. She is about to turn 15, and I am about to teach another child how to drive.

I came home for an "extended lunch break", and was trying to listen to that "impossible to get audio stream over the internet". I'm so glad those days are behind us! The local CBS finally cut to our game with about 45 ticks left in regulation. It was particularly fun because I had a co-worker at a sister plant out in Allentown, PA who's a die-hard Buckeye. I couldn't wait to get back to the office and call to rub it in! I won his pool that year, close enough to 2nd place that my pick of USU over OSU gave me the points to win! (I haven't won his hoops pool since :() That game is still a point of conversation on occasion when we have contact.

Sophomore at Mountain Crest. I remember walking into class and asking my teacher if we'd be able to watch the game. He said no, so I excused myself for a "bathroom break" and watched the entire game from the library. I was absent from at least two classes that day. I will never forget the breakaway Curtis Bobb dunk to seal it

Very similar story. Hope my daughter is not graduated from USU before we win another one.

Sounds like we were at LHS at the same time. I was a Sophomore sitting in Honors Chemistry. I think Huie was the teacher, but my memory on that is fuzzy.

I can't remember the other class I would have had during the game. I do recall that was the last year where I didn't skip the entire day after 2nd period (which ended slightly before the first game tipped) to watch games on that Thursday and Friday. Thankfully, in those days, it was pretty easy to get your absences excused.

52 years old, and in Idaho Falls on business. Watched the game in my hotel room. Lots of bouncing on the bed when Tony Brown hit that shot.

I was in a work meeting. I was able to convince people to turn on the tv. It was the most animated I've ever been in a work meeting. I remember I was the only one not sitting down.

I was attending some meetings in St. George and ran over to the Casa Blanca casino and watched it on their big screen. The whole area there was full of USU fans. Remember watching that game very well.

I was teaching school in Dublin, Ohio. All my students were in their Buckeye gear and I was wearing my Utah State sweatshirt. We turned the game on in my classroom, we didn't get much done that afternoon.

In Medianeira Brazil walking to my apartment from the local "Correios" (post office). I decided to open a large manila envelope on the walk home and pulled out a newspaper clipping showing that the Aggies beat Ohio State. I was in shock not having been able to follow the end of the season and as I read the paper I started yelling and jumping up and down. My Brazilian companion was very confused as were all the Brazilian pedestrians on the street. Such a good memory. My family sent me a ton of articles about the game in that envelope. That stuff was like gold back then.

I was finally able to watch the game somewhere around 2004 or 2005 when Pablohoney let me borrow his VHS copy of the game and I converted it to DVD.

Serving a mission in Detroit, Michigan. It was cold and there was still snow on the ground and some guy let us in while tracting. His TV was tuned to the tournament during halftime of one of the games. The USU/OSU score showed up in the crawl at the bottom and I let out a muffled cry of joy and looked at my companion, who was a Ute fan. He saw it, too, and nodded and smiled as well. Then they started showing the highlights of the game starting with the Brown pump fake and fadeaway.

Who the hell knows what happened the rest of the day? :noidea:

I was in my first year of grad school, and I was in the middle of taking an extremely difficult take-home final. I stayed up pretty late working on it. I didn't have a TV in my apartment and Internet streaming didn't exist in those days, so I decided that getting some rest was more important than finding a TV where I could watch the game since I wasn't expecting a win anyway. My sleep was interrupted by a phone call. It was from a friend in my program who lived a short walk away. He said, "You need to come over here now!" Since he was taking the same final, my first thought was that there was some kind of emergency. Then he continued, "Utah State is in overtime!"

"Oh my gosh!!!!" was all I could say. I frantically threw on some clothes and ran to his apartment. I only saw the last couple minutes, but it was still worth it. I sometimes kick myself for not dragging myself out of bed to see the whole game, but such is life.

I came out of an after school class in Anchorage, flipped on the radio with about 5 minutes left in the game, and white knuckled it to the end of the game. Never left my parking spot until the game was over. I remember the weather was beautiful, and snow was melting, and water was running everywhere. Good day.

Driving around listening to the game in my car. I ordered lunch at a sports bar that said they would have all the games, but it turned out their satellite service wasn't working. This was back in the CBS-only days where local stations only got one game, with "live look-ins" on other games in progress; seems like the TVs in the bar had on Kentucky v. Directional State in a rout. I kept up with the scores in the crawl (or maybe the corner of the screen in those days). But it was on the radio, so I finished my lunch and drove around Tulsa and listened. But when it got down to the last few minutes of regulation I was too amped to concentrate on driving, so I pulled over to the curb, yelling and screaming by myself.

Nobody here knows anything.

In my sophomore year of high school, I can honestly say I knew very little about Utah State aside from them having an extension on the west campus of Snow College.

I was at home here in St. Greed watching the game with my two sons that love sports, one son dose not love sports. I was my own boss, so I took off for 3 hours, and my sons came home early from school. When Brown hit the little floater inside the foul line, we went nuts! We really got screwed Again for the umptinth time in the tournament. Playing Ohio State, then having to play UCLA the next game! Isn't this the year that we went 19-0 in conference?

By the by, for those of you who don't know Ladell Andersen there is an article on the news section from Doug Robinson.

Kind of amazing or sad if you want, that we haven't won a first round game since then. We have only won 6 total.........wonder if we will ever have a winning streak in the NCAA tournament providing we don't have to wait 20 more years to get there?
