Just horrible coaching

Post by Roy McAvoy » November 10th, 2017, 8:37 pm

This first game looks like one of the worst coached basketball teams I can remember watching. This is such bad basketball.

#fireduryea

Seriously how embarrassing. That trip to Europe really helped this team play together and get extra practice before the season started. Inexplicable to lose to Weber 2 years in a row now.

Never had a lead in this game. Absolutely embarrassing performance by a team that has more experience and a Euro trip.

I’m actually shocked that we played this poorly. Mcewen was terrible. He won’t become the greatest Aggie by talking about it. He must perform.

Good to see a team running plays and getting open looks - just wish that team was ours.

I'm not going to advocate firing Tim just yet but he was vastly out coached. Isby has potential but I felt like a ton of his drives to the basket he needed to kick it back out. Defensively I thought we looked better than what I expected, which wasn't that high. Offensively, it was a train wreak. Isby, Merrill, and McEwen combined for 9-30! I didn't see any changes offensively after halftime. Terrible game management at the end. I felt we needed to start fouling sooner.

Koby should shut up and play basketball. You're not going to get every call. Play your game and earn the fouls back.

You know what the most disturbing part of this loss was for me? It was that it was simply met by a shrug from me. No passion. No anger. No frustration. Simply resignation that this is what Aggie basketball has become and what it will remain until a coaching change is made.

5 assists all game. Tough to see basketball program where it is today.

We had very few open looks. We also couldn’t finish at the rim for most of the game. It was just pathetic. I saw no changes. This is who Duryea wants us to be I suppose.

I hope all the parties that pressured Barnes for TD are pleased. As far as Barnes pooping the bed on his way out the door? This hidden camera footage from his Pitt office says it all....

I thought that Koby had a bad game, and Sam Merrill was just awful. If those two play like that this could be a terrible season.

Duryea should have never been hired in the first place.

Funny thing is, most of us could see this coming the day he was hired. Crazy how Barnes could have botched I️t so badly.

Barnes spent all of his last days preparing for his move to Pittsburgh, then realized he'd forgotten to hire a basketball coach so he poked his head out of his office and picked the first person he saw. Like a camper who pees out the fire on his last night at the campsite, he gave no concern to who would follow him the next night and have to smell burnt urine.

Evidence of just how poorly Weber played is that the final score was a mere 6-point difference. They struggled with being on the same page. We were atrocious. We had some guys play hard. I appreciated Isby, Dargenton, Taylor, and was especially impressed with Abel Porter. Duryea mentioned he usually plays with the scout team. That's probably why he played like a kid who's been coached and has expectations for running plays and moving the ball. This was the worst, by a long shot, that I've seen Merrill play. He looked selfish and stupid tonight. He's usually been our smartest player on the floor. Koby put as much effort into complaining about calls as he put into his play tonight. Our system, if that's what it can be called, is incredibly poor. I have the same lamentation as Utaggies. TD has flushed the enjoyment of Aggie basketball, and I'm fighting my own apathy trying to stay engaged as a fan.

It may have been horrible coaching but it went both ways. That was an awful game to watch.

I have no idea what we were trying to do offensively at all.

This went south real quick with Koby getting into foul trouble.

Went to the game. Was completely underwhelmed. Not an entertaining game. Was bad basketball on both sides but USU was just a hot mess.

I went to the game tonite. Man what a pitiful game. Koby is quickly becoming my least favorite player. I had great hopes for Merrill this year but he hasn't looked good in either game so far.

I told myself I'll give Duryea this year to prove to me he can do it. After tonite I'm ready to bail on him like most here. Wow we played like crap. We did not deserve to win.

Another huge disappointment for me was Henson. He looked and acted like he had zero clue about what was going on around him. As mentioned previously, Koby needs to get over himself. Instead of acting and thinking he’s the best player on the court, start showing it.

I wondered about Hensen too. Weren't some saying he was our best shooter? He never even looked for a shot.

Henson seemed like he had a chronic case of whatever Jake Heaps had. Does great in practice but completely (I can't express myself without swearing) the bed in a real game.

I just stumbled across this article... Is he for real? Maybe I’m just salty about the game, but I found this really off-putting. I can promise you, no one in the running for “best Aggie ever” is going to have a winless record against Weber freaking State.

I would be surprised if McEwen ever leads a USU team to the postseason, let alone becomes the “best Aggie ever.” 😂😂

Can we stop with the silly "Barnes hired Duryea because he had one foot out the door/he was pressured into it by someone/whatever." No, Barnes hired Duryea because literally every other potential candidate turned him down. Remember when Barnes told Duryea that he wasn't going to be considered for the head coaching job? Remember how the search dragged on for months as Barnes desperately begged anyone who wasn't Duryea to take the position? I'm not saying this to defend Duryea. I felt like I was punched in the gut when he was hired, and at this point I think he needs to go at the end of the season unless the team starts to look much better. But we're delusional if we think that the next coach is likely to be much better as long as the salary we pay our coaching salaries are at the bottom of the MWC. Barnes is not to blame for Duryea. Our athletic budget that is 10th in the MWC is to blame for Duryea. And we can hire and fire coaches for years, but unless we increase our budget to be competitive with our MWC peers, expect more of the same when a new coach is hired.

Just horrible coaching

Post by dyedblue » November 11th, 2017, 3:48 am

“If I stay all four years, I really think I’ll be the leading scorer,” he said during an interview last month inside the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. “Really, I don’t want to be arrogant about it. But I just think with the work I’ve put in and the competition we’re playing now compared to back then … I feel like I can be the best player to come through this school if I play here all four years.”

Wow. I think the kid is good, but Wayne, Jaycee, Tai would never have said that. They never would have taken themselves all the way out of the game like Koby did last night. That was painful to watch him mope around.

I am one of the few, but I have never liked him as a player. He whines too much and plays hero ball. He is very talented, but it just rubs me wrong to see a kid throw a tantrum after every foul call.
