Great win!

Post by Aggie formerly in Hawaii » January 6th, 2018, 9:56 pm

Congrats to Duryea and the team. How many times have we beaten UNLV on the road in our history? 3-1 in conference with 4-1 very likely. A corner appears to have been turned, hope the good play continues.

That is another impressive thing about this victory. If you told me a week ago that we would win at unlv I would say it was because they were injured. Instead we beat them in their house as the injured team. Probably the best feeling I've had as an Aggie fan in a long time.

Outmanned on the road on a court we never win on. Very satisfying win. There was stretch when absolutely nothing went their way and could have folded but they collected themselves, made some big plays, hit some big shots and pulled out the win. Very nice. Two gut-check wins in a row. So happy for the kids.

Those 2 threes at the end were so big. Absolute daggers.

McEwen was 1-7 from 3, but shot 100% from the stripe. He doesn’t usually shoot that low from the 3. If he can keep his FT% at 80 or higher and shoot his normal 3 point % that will help tons!

I’m very pleased with this road W!

That one 3 he did hit though.... #dagger. Very impressed by this teams defensive effort and rebounding. I was there and very impressed how loud the season tix holders get in Vegas too.

UNLV played horrible defense last night. The Aggie offense that fans have complained about for years resulted in a score of open shots, from the perimeter, dribble penetration, breakaway layups and interior passing.

If you were to compile a highlight reel of the 30 easiest shots of the season, ten of them would have been from this game.

Although the Aggies’ effort, particularly on defense and rebounding, could carry over in a beneficial way to the rest of the season, I think the offense will struggle against future opponents.

Yeah we still have a long way to go, but I feel like being optimistic just for the simple fact that being an Aggie basketball fan has been a pessimistic experience for so long. We are still just 10-7 and who knows what will happen, but it was a great week. I don't know how unlv will finish, but even if they are mediocre, it is a win in past years we would not have gotten. UNLV has not been good since we joined the league, yet we have not been able to win down there. This is probably the best unlv team since we joined the mw and we got the road win.

It was a great win. I’m particularly happy to see McEwen playing well and generally within the flow of the game. I expect him to be named the MWC player of the week.

With the low expectations I have had for this season, I would love to see 9-9 in conference, one win in the MWC tournament and any kind of post-season appearance. That seemed unthinkable a week ago, but now it’s maybe realistic.

I don't believe 10-7 is all that important right now. What is important is 3-1 in the MWC and a tie for second place. I didn't believe that is where we would be right now. Granted, only one of those wins was on the road and one was against SJS. We need to dog-paddle a while longer and get Dargenton, Stall (I hope) and Miller back and develop a cohesive team. Right now we look like a play-off team that has shortened its bench to 7 players. That’s a lot of minutes for players and pretty dicey when someone gets into foul trouble. Thankfully we haven’t had foul trouble in the last two games. I don’t think that will last when opponents try to force it inside to get fouls on Taylor and Brown.

Even though we blew a 15 point lead what impressed me was the fact that when we were down by three with 8:42 to go and down by 2 with 2:01 to go we stayed in the game and came back to win by 7. When we blew the lead I thought for sure that we were going to lose given the fact that we were very shorthanded on players, fatigued, undersized, and on the road. Great effort by the team to pull out the win on the road against a big athletic team. The defense was awesome too.

I think its best for Aggie fans to just go one game at a time for now. This was a big win, but not necessarily an indicator of future success. It took an "out of the blue" performance by one player, in particular, to get us to the finish line. Can that player do it again? Upcoming games against Colorado State, Wyoming and Nevada will answer a lot of questions.

Before Saturday's win, Utah State had an all-time record of 1-18 at UNLV.

Agreed. What I really liked and what I think bodes well is the level of effort the players gave. They played good defense and fought hard for rebounds. If we can give that kind of effort consistently, this team can be much improved over what it was last year and to start the year this year. If they play this hard, I will have to eat crow for all the bad things I said about Duryea. But like you said, one game at a time. Being consistent is very hard.

Most, if not all, of his six misses were the step back threes early in the shot clock. I wish he would eliminate that from his game.

Of all the teams that have gone into Vegas and lost, the last team I thought would pull off a win was the group of 8 dudes that won Saturday night. I predicted that we would win 3 conference game all season, it looks like I will probably be wrong. I hope the fellas make me really wrong. I'll gladly eat my words for more wins.

I love being wrong in these situations. I remember a football team in 2014 that went to Provo and won. I didn't think they had a shot at winning either.
