Randy Rahe

Post by usufan5477 » March 11th, 2018, 7:58 pm

My vote would be for Randy Rahe. All he has done is win at Weber State. It is hard to win for a couple of years. Really hard to win for 10 like he has. He is a great recruiter and coach.

For some reason this reminds me of that episode of Seinfeld when George decides to do the opposite of what he thinks he should do..... and finds great success.

Nope. He consistently underachieves with his teams. Weber fell apart to end the season this year dropping from 2nd to 4th place in the last few games and then got destroyed by a lower see in the Big Sky tournament. He seems to recruit well but his teams don't meet expectations. Go read the Weber board. Their fans are done with him.

Given your history and credibility with coaches, even though I like Randy, I would now have to put him last on my list simply because you support him.

He would be a good consolation prize. I've defended Rahe on this board countless times. However if we are truly going to do a national search this time I believe we can find someone better.

That is correct, and you said that without being a jerk.

Oh please. We might as well keep Duryea as bring in Rahe. Don't see a lot of difference.

I am about as big a fan of Stew Morrill as is it possible to be and even I think we need to look beyond the Morrill coaching tree for new life and new blood. We need new energy, new excitement, new practices to draw people back to the program and just a variation on a theme ain’t gonna do that IMO .

Rahe just interviewed at UTEP. Time to cut the cord with the Stew line of coaches and start fresh with a younger coach.

Rahe's agent had a conversation with UTEP because they wanted to see if he was interested. That is not the job that would make him leave Weber. I doubt Utah State is at this point either.

Article in the Deseret News says Rahe is makiing $391K at Weber State. Duryea was making $227K at USU. You think Rahe would take a pay cut for the pleasure of coaching at USU? The answer is no. And I don't see USU coming up with $400K for a new coach. The Aggies are going to have to catch lightning in a bottle with a young up-and-comer coach that is looking for his/her first head coaching gig. I don't see USU paying the type of money it will take to get a proven coach with other options.

Your numbers are incorrect, and Stew was making almost 800,000 per year at Utah State. The money is there for the right coach

You will have to take the correctness of the numbers up with Brad Rock of the Deseret News, that is where I got them.

The average coach in the MW makes $655k. We need to up the pay.

Stew made far more than that. Duryea got a smaller contract because USU took a chance on him.

If we can't get AT LEAST 400k for the next head coach (maybe 500k) then we might as well dump basketball. I think the reasons for giving Duryea less (and I think Rock got the numbers wrong, I swear Duryea was in the 300's, plus Collette wasn't punched in the face, if we all remember, so the article isn't exactly the most accurate) was because of 1. Stew's payout of his contract, and 2. because the AD knew he wasn't a homerun hire and were able to pay him less. Where else was he going?

USU will pay more than that if they need to.

the picture of the contract posted on here before said that the base coaching salary was $279k (item 2 below) and that he got $100k for contractually obligated radio bits, marketing, coaches shows, etc (item 7). That puts him at $379k. My guess is that Rahe's contact included that type of stipulation as well, which would put their salary #s a lot closer than that article would have you believe...Image

I’m sorry to see Duryea go, but I think it would be a huge mistake to bring in Rahe. There’s a lot of coaches stepping up to the plate like the coach at Montana, northern Colorado, Portland state and Eastern Washington. Go out and get a coach who can recruit and lead..... not a Stew 2.0. Weber has its own problems.

I think you're way too quick to dismiss what Rahe has done. Year, after year the guy has win and recruited some very skilled players. He is not a flash in the pan sexy hire like Barret Peery but every year you can count on Weber being in the mix at the end of the year.

They run a modern offense, but threes, and work the past. Defensively they play well.

Wow. Who do you guys think we're going to hire? Mike Krzyzewski? I would be thrilled if Randy Rahe were our new coach, but I can't see any reason why he would leave Weber for USU. I really hope that Hartwell has figured out a way to pay market rate for the new coach, because if he hasn't, we're going to pining for the Duryea days soon. (And I say this as one who felt like I was punched in the gut when Duryea was hired and steadily lost interest in USU basketball as he coached.)

This hire needs to generate excitement. Rahe has failed more often than succeeded when stakes are high. I would have preferred keeping TD for one more year than spend the next 3 or 4 years with Rahe. I want more than just regular season results. Rahe would be the safe hire, IMO we probably need to take some risk with our next hire.

Rahe has had to work for the autobid every year. All or nothing. Regular season results have a lot more clout when you're in a multi-bid conference. Losing in the MWC tourney quarterfinals you could still probably go to the Dance if Gonzaga were in the conference.

I hate to constantly defend Rahe because he isn't my first choice, but Rahe is a superior coach to Duryea. He immediately improved Weber State after he was hired and has had sustained success for over a decade now. His conference record at Weber is better than Stew's at USU. I have no doubt if we hired Rahe, our program would be improved.
Again he isn't my first choice, but I would not cry in a corner if we have to settle for Rahe.

Gotta hand it to you Stanford, you’re consistent in your messaging at least. I hope we can pay the new guy close to what Stew was making.

I vote Yes for Raye. I said this before the Duryea experiment. We know Raye runs a good program.
