The Coaching search that nobody knew anything about

Post by bpd » March 23rd, 2018, 11:59 am

It seems that nobody knows anything about what is going on with this coaching search. The terrible HJ ran a guess column well over a week ago guessing at who is going to be up for it. Nothing since then. The trib, who has no beat writer did write an in depth article, but even then were wrong when they said Dave Rice was near the top of the list, yet later said he would not be interviewed. This morning a South Dakota radio station said Craig Smith had been interviewed, but that didn't come from a local media outlet. KVNU, which has had pretty good Aggie coverage has had nothing. 1280, the flagship has reported nothing, even though they have connections.

So, is this an AD thing where they have kept everything pretty secret, or is it lack of media doing any investigating journalism?

So it sounds like you have some inside knowledge, right? You can just tell us who it will be, nbd.

It sounds like the AD is pushing for Lloyd.

It seems to be there’s been as much information about our coaching search as any coaching search I’ve seen.

Yep. I think some people are expecting a media source to come out and say "USU will hire...." . It wont happen. Look on twitter and you'll see exactly what's going on in the coaching search. It's not much of a mystery.

I'm not too worried about it. As long as Jonny hires the right coach I'll be happy.

I’m not going to pretend to know who it will be. My guess is Lloyd but he just finished coaching last night so....

This is also consistent with what Harry Palmdale@nosocksJonny tweeted yesterday who is a very credible source.

Places that do these kind of searches well keep it close to the vest. Kudos to Hartwell for doing so. I hope his decision is as good as his process.

I am guessing that Hartwell is much brighter than Barnes was. You don't say who the candidate won't be so you don't hire someone from that list. You don't say who it possibly will be since you don't want to look like you settled for less than number one. I actually find it as a positive that the department seems to be proceeding while remaining tight-lipped. It introduces a need for patience on the fans' part but frankly, I hope to only hear one "official" name. Because hearing two or more means something got messed up.

If the media can't crack that department ''secrecy', good for the department.

This is a good point. Remember the disaster that was UNLV's last coaching search? That's the blueprint on how NOT to go about it.

In yesterday’s Daily Dirt, I mentioned the search at Utah State. To update the list…I have been told to scratch off UC Davis head coach Jim Les. I’ve also been told that USU has shown interest in Wright State head coach Scott Nagy. More on this search as I hear it.

https://hoopdirt.com/daily-dirt-3-21-18/

I have heard that Utah State has narrowed their search to 4-5 candidates. It sounds like coaches in the mix here are Portland State head coach Barret Peery, UC Davis head coach Jim Les, and Gonzaga assistant Tommy Lloyd. Former Georgia head coach Mark Fox has also been linked to this one.

And so it goes...

People with an insatiable desire to "break the news" dig and dig. They find "insiders" in the AD who leak information. Names are announced on message boards and in Twitter. Reactions fly. Old names are removed from the social media lists. New names are added. By the time it is all done, several names that "were the top choice" will not have the job. The analysis of the failure of the search to achieve due diligence because instead of all those good candidates (some who may have never been offered the job or even been officially contacted) we had to settle for someone who didn't meet the requirements that social media dictates - experience, regional know-how, personality, recruiting skill set, etc. etc.

It may come as a surprise. We had fans who were not in favor of the Stew Morrill hire. NO candidate is going to meet the hopes (or dreams) of everyone on the board. That does not prove that Hartwell (who I have never met) did anything wrong in the process. We HAVE to wait and see.

But the on-going frenzy seems more likely to create dissatisfaction in the hire than in creating anything positive about it. I know that it's a message board and open to conjecture etc.etc. But unless I am mistaken (it does happen a lot), people on the board who end up disappointed in the eventual hire (there will be some) will have more board data to quote for their disappointment than actual personal research. And I surmise they will have a lot less data than the AD who makes the hiring announcement.

So if Hartwell announces that he has hired "His Guy that he wanted all along" will you trust him even if it's not one of the top names that have been passed around on the social media platforms?

I followed the CSU coaching search pretty closely. Legitimate media sources (Denver Post, Coloradoan, the fan sites) all had the candidates CSU would contact and interview. They included Becky Hammon, Tj O, Craig Smith, Nico Medved, Linder, and the coach from Montana). All sites updated on twitter. I listened to radio interviews with said reporters. Everybody knew it was down to Craig Smith and Medved the last few days.

So by comparison, the Utah media has not compared.

Dogie was afraid the board would turn on him by November. You guys have already turned on Peery based on the idea that he might get the job.

Let's trust that Hartwell is doing due diligence. If someone is off the list, it is likely for good reason. If someone is moving up the list it is likely for good reason. I am not going to assume that whoever we hire is the only one we could get because he is not the one we on the board thought we wanted.
