Re: Tauriawn Knight
Given that Duryea seemed to not really develop talent much in players, is it not worth seeing what Smith might be able to bring out of him in year 2 at this point? Our other options are basically limited to taking risks on late signees, which rarely pan out, and our roster is devoid of a PG with any D-1 experience at this point.
Seems like a lot of people are dumping on Ainge for being thrown into a largely no-win situation as a true freshman. Giving him a minute to spread his wings and potentially thrive under the new coach might be the best option for the team at this point though.

A valid point, PC. Very valid. I, for one, am very interested to see what Smith can do with the roster we have now. Of course, I'm also willing to give him a mulligan on year one if things don't go well.

Re: Tauriawn Knight
Agree with the two posters above. I'm actually not as down on Ainge as everybody else. Obviously he was a freshman and terribly outmatched when he was put in. However, I think he displayed good athleticism and quickness for a PG, and he is probably fairly intelligent because genetics (I know, we all hate his Dad because of BYU, but he seems like a fairly smart dude). I think he could develop into at least a serviceable backup. Also, I have never seen him disparage USU. He seems to be all in, so I'm good with him staying on the roster. If he hasn't shown good improvement after 2 years (a redshirt year and a sophmore year), then I think you counsel him out.

Re: Tauriawn Knight
Perhaps Smith is waiting to see if he is able to land a better option before anyone else is shown the door? It is better to have somebody at the spot than no one at all.

Re: Tauriawn Knight
I would prefer Porter over Ainge at this juncture. I get what everyone is saying about potential and possible development but the guy walked out of the Spectrum and quit on his teammates. That’s a bigger red flag to me than even his play.

Is that an actual story? If so, I don't recall hearing it, would you elaborate for the less enlightened?hipsterdoofus21 wrote: ↑April 19th, 2018, 12:17 pmI would prefer Porter over Ainge at this juncture. ^ This. Unless someone is a big detriment to the team, retain until superior talent will commit vs ending up with a lesser player or one less player.

At the risk of derailing this scintillating discussion about cheerleaders and Crew Ainge (about equally relevant to USU basketball), here is an article I came upon about the subject of this thread. Sounds like a great kid.

Knight of the roundball
All-around skills taking him to South Dakota
Bryce McKinnis | Special to the Sun Dec 8, 2017
“He’s a man of few words,” said Santa Fe coach Josh Williams as he describes his senior point guard Tauriawn Knight. “He’s really a pretty humble kid, not very high maintenance.”
Yet when asked about his in-game leadership skills, Williams uses the word “vocal.”
Knight, a South Dakota signee, speaks softly and maintains himself during conversation (aside from a poorly-concealed smirk upon mention of his defensive skills), but manages to throw aside his bashfulness on the court. Williams, who is in his second season coaching the Wolves, has high praise for Knight’s leadership skills.
“He does a really good job kinda being a coach on the floor for us in practice. He’s probably the most vocal kid I’ve ever seen,” Williams said. “A lot of times, I ask him ‘what do you think about this?’ and that’s the kind of relationship we have.”
Knight is ranked as the no. 5 player in the class of 2018 in Oklahoma by PrepHoops.com. Knight’s scouting report describes him as an impressive passer and a tenacious defender. The 6’1” guard has no trouble getting to the basket, either. Knight has already tallied a 24- and 26-point game against Edmond Memorial and Southmoore, respectively.
“We just try to push him every day, just try to put him in a situation where he’s gotta prove he’s the best player in the gym, not just because somebody ranks him number five,” Williams said.
Knight’s ability to move and create opportunities for the Wolves may be the strongest component of his game.
“He sees the floor really, really well. I think (his shooting) improved a ton, which has kinda opened up the floor for him a lot,” Williams said.
Knight’s shooting skills and ability to lead will serve him well at his next destination. Knight signed to the University of South Dakota on Nov. 17.
“South Dakota was just the best fit for me. They made me feel like family when I went down there,” Knight said.
Located in Vermillion, South Dakota, Knight will be playing more than 550 miles from home. South Dakota is 8-3 thus far and sits at no. 2 in the Summit League.
Knight credits his summers traveling the country in preparing him to make the transition from high school to Division-I basketball.
“Just how to be away from family for so long and how to do things on my own like get on planes on my own,” Knight said.
Knight plans on starting for the Coyotes as a freshman arrival, and has already made connections with his future teammates and coaches.
“They treated me like I was their brother already as soon as I went down there,” Knight said.
“He’s a tremendous player and a tremendous athlete,” Williams said. “He’s got a really bright future at South Dakota. We’re really looking forward to seeing how that turns out for him.”
Knight plans after he leaves South Dakota are to either play basketball overseas or become a physical therapist. His major is undecided.

I don't mean to sound ignorant, but, is there a pronunciation guide for the kid's first name? I don't want the Rob Flygare pronunciation, but the one his momma intended. Thanks.

Not adding anything valuable here, but I'll throw in my two cents anyway. I have been pronouncing it in my head as though it is spelled "Taurean" or "Torrian."

His options are boundless; CSI (he would not play, but he could be practice fodder), Albertson College, Northwest Nazarene, Montana Tech, Treasure Valley Community College, UVU junior varsity, BYU Idaho, college of eastern Utah (I think there is a place he could thrive), Mesa College and ft Lewis state.

Not even the junior varsity? Truth be told, Northwest Nazarene may not either. If he needs/wants an LDS experience for college, why not BYU Idaho or southern Virginia? I think he could get some minutes at those places

I'm actually really smart, probably smarter than you are so if you disagree with what I have stated in this post, you are likely wrong (and dumb).
