Wayne Estes - 75th Birthday
Today would have been Estes’ 75th birthday. An article from The Missoulian:

A story that never fails to cause a lump in my throat even though he died 7 months before I was born

Had never heard the romance angle before.
Thanks for finding this.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Re: Wayne Estes - 75th Birthday
This was great for me to read. I served a mission with Paula's (the love interest) brother. He didn't give me details, but did say they were talking marriage when Wayne died, and that he was planning on joining the LDS church. He had taken the missionary discussions. My mission was only 2 1/2 years after the tragedy which was fresh in everyone 's mind.

Pretty sure I saw him play against Cal in Berkeley. Just the sight of his shoes in the Spectrum would make me cry. One of the few times I saw my dad cry was in front of those shoes.
After a Celtic game where Larry Bird had put on an incredible shooting performance the announcer asked Red Auerbach if Larry Bird was the best shooter he'd ever seen. Red said "no, that would be Wayne Estes"

That was a great read, I remember as a 12 year old growing up in S Idaho and how the whole town reacted to his death. Somehow, someway, he needs to be in the basketball HOF.

Re: Wayne Estes - 75th Birthday
I've posted 2 or 3 videos to YouTube over the years that contained video of him shooting around the Fieldhouse. He was pretty amazing with either hand and the distance the hook shots he makes are so foreign to anything seen in today's game. I don't know how they could be defended.
I'll see if I can find the links and add them here. Just search BigBlueChat on YouTube and you should find them.

My favorite basketball game of all time was the Aggies beating BYU in Provo by a point or two. I think it was Estes junior year. Gary Barchler of BYU was the top free thrower shooter in the US BYU went into a four corner stall with about 30 seconds left with Batchler mainly holding the ball. The game was tied and the Aggies had to get the ball to score and break the tie. with about 10 seconds left Batchler was fouled by Troy Collier who fouled out. Mike Casey replaced him on the first foul shot and Wayne wasn't going to be denied for the rebound. He power up grabbed the rebound and bounced back up and threw a bullet pass to the other basket. Mike Casey ran immediately on the shot leaped in the air and pulled the pass down with one hand and bounced back up and slammed it into the basket so hard you couldn't see the net move. They waited a few seconds before they put it on the score board. The BYU crowd was in shock.

I was there. It was great! Wasn't John Fairchild BYU's best player? Estes outplayed Fairchild and my Cougar friend was mad. I remember Batchler. He was a little on the cocky side.cvaggie wrote: ↑May 16th, 2018, 4:11 pmMy favorite basketball game of all time was the Aggies beating BYU in Provo by a point or two. A BYU player a little on the cocky side? That seems unlikely.

Ran across these in a newspaper search tonight and thought they might be of interest:
I couldn't find anything from the HJ, SLTrib or DNews. They didn't have anything scanned and available from these dates.
