Nevada Hire
Not confirmed, but it's sounding like Alford is their guy. Seth Roberts (who I don't necessarily trust) tweeted that he is a serious candidate and Nevada guys who seem to be in the know are confirming it. If so, great replacement for Muss as our new villain.

Re: Nevada Hire
Alford’s handling of the Pierre Pierce stuff at Iowa should give any prospective employer pause.....

Re: Nevada Hire
Definitely not a guy whose personality evokes warm fuzzy feelings but the guy can coach. Division 1 breakdown:
SW Missouri St - 4 year winning % of .619 with an NIT appearance and NCAA Sweet 16 in his last year.
Iowa - 8 year winning % of ..598 but only .477 in Big 10 with 3 NITs and 3 NCAA appearances. Never got past 2nd round
New Mexico - 6 year winning % of .749 and .723 in MWC. 3 NITs and 3 NCAA appearances.
UCLA -5+ seasons with winning % of .633 and .611 in PAC 12. 3 Sweet 16s and one Final Four.
All in all, in 23 full seasons has made the NCAA 11 times.
The Iowa gig isn't that impressive but either won or had a share of 4 MWC titles in 6 years and the only way to make UCLA fans happy is the reincarnation of John Wooden and they'd probably hang him if he didn't rip off multiple titles in succession.
Edit: Also see ybu hired Pope. Do they release blue smoke out of the temple when finalizing a search?

Those of you that are secondary fans of small schools cause of something like your mission, employment, upper degrees, kids that go there, living there, etc., need to now hope your team earns a 14 seed and is paired up with 3 seed Nevada!

Re: Nevada Hire
He didnt make the final four at ucla. 4 of his last 5 years at ucla were mediocre. This wasnt the case of ucla having unrealistic expectations. They were right to get rid of him.Bank Shot wrote: ↑April 10th, 2019, 2:52 pmDefinitely not a guy whose personality evokes warm fuzzy feelings but the guy can coach. Division 1 breakdown:

Just saw this article on Nevada Sports Net ranking the MW coaches from best to worst.

Funny how Steve Alford immediately becomes the best coach in the MW....

Re: Nevada Hire
I don't know that I agree or disagree with that. He is proven. And he was coaching in a much more difficult MW than we have today. Hopefully Nevada can keep it up and other coaches can improve. I think UNLV will be significantly better in a year or two. I think CSU will improve this year too.ThunderAggie wrote: ↑April 18th, 2019, 11:11 amJust saw this article on Nevada Sports Net ranking the MW coaches from best to worst.

Follow-up: Does anybody around SJSU even care anymore? Are they just kind of throwing in the towel?

Re: Nevada Hire
Seems pretty fair to me since he’s talking about overall success in the MWC. He also said that Nevada lost the best coach in the MWC when Musselman was hired away. Musselman was clearly not the best coach last year, but overall he’s got more titles and wins in the conference than Smith...

Re: Nevada Hire
I would agree that Alford is the most decorated/proven coach in the conference. That being said, there are some other coaches in this list that I’d rather have at the helm than Alford. That guy is not very likable and wouldn’t have been a good fit at USU. If I were Hartwell and had all these coaches as candidates last year and know then what we know now, Alford would be my 4th or 5th choice. Alford may do well at Nevada, I’m just not a big fan of his.
