Bean is the #3 forward

Post by SLB » January 9th, 2019, 8:13 pm

From the look of things, Bean has become the #3 forward at the moment.

Brown has been a turnover machine in Conference play

All year. I try to not criticize players but he just puts his down and drives to the bucket every times. He has regressed from last year

Don't think Brown got in at all in the second half.

100% agreed. I said something similar last week. Brown has not adjusted well to coming off the bench at all. He's trying way too hard to make an immediate impact once he gets into games.

Brown played a total of 5 minutes last night. All in the first half. I believe that the last straw was when he put his head down at the three point line and dribbled into a double, and then a triple team, and still tried to get a shot off leading to a turnover with three of his teammates wide open on the wings.

Other teams are now scouting him and know that if he even takes a dribble he's going to go to the hoop no matter what. All they have to do is double or triple team him to thwart that and cause turnovers. That's gotta change.

Looked to me that players were getting benched for turnovers more than they have the last few games.

It's one thing to lose a turnover in the heat of battle, it's another to lose another due to careless play.

For me Brown is trying to hard. He can be a really good role player if he lets the game come to him. His drive to the basket with 2-3 people on him was downright embarrassing. I know he wants to make an impact, but he needs to play within the game and try hero ball.

I agree 100%. I think that's why he was pulled. Smith has been known to do this with his best players if they're not buying in to the team concept. I think Brown will come around and contribute for us.

Totally agree. I just noticed that some of those careless turnovers led to the player being benched, where it seemed like Smith was letting them play through it before. I think the players got the message, as turnovers were down in this game (11 vs 17+ the past couple of games).

Bean is indeed the #3 forward. Lots of recruiting to do.

Gonna be sad/funny in 2 years when Bean is starting and averaging like 8/8 on a tourney team and Blue is sitting in his rocker mumbling "gotta recruit better, gotta recruit better"

Honestly MJA, what's the purpose in spending hundreds of thousands of dollars going all over the world to recruit if our best players are simply walking on. If Smith thinks Bean is one of his best, he'll have lots of scholarships available to give him one. So yes, if Bean is a walkon in 2 years and playing that much, I'll be pissed. Either give him a scholarship and tell everyone he's all-conference material or use the $$$ and get better players. Pretty reasonable don't you think?

By the way, Porter's our #1 PG also right now. It's a good think that Queta and Merrill are scholarship players, because the other 3 starters could be walkons or former walkons (Porter, Bean, and Taylor). Not great recruiting

Well let's hope in 2 years that we don't describe Smith's recruiting as s*** happens -- I think he can do better than that. If he wants to give Bean a scholarship, I'm on board. If not, I hope he finds better players to put on scholarship than Bean and plays them instead of Bean. Pretty simple

If I remember right, Smith didn't have much time to recruit when he got here. All this nit picking about walk-ons and quality recruits are moot at this point. It's the hand we are delt and Smith is getting the most out of the players. I'm more curious about who he can get here though a complete recruiting cycle.

I agree with you.
Through half a recruiting cycle, Coach Smith has the number one recruiting class in the Mountain West and the 74th best recruiting class in the country and Alphonso Anderson is due for a re-rank.

Agreed with both of you. I think the main thing with Smith is this is a TEAM, from what I’ve seen and heard Brown has been struggling with that aspect this year, therefor he sat the second 1/2. I think that second 1/2 of being sat taught him Coach’s point. We don’t have time to be selfish with this years team. I imagine it’s hard for him to not be starting from starting all the time last season, but hopefully he gets out of his head and instead of trying so hard and forcing unneeded errors in attempt to prove to others he’s good, he’s able to just play the game and like you said before let the game come to him. I’m sure he will come around, he has talent, he just needs to know when and how to use it and buy into the system that is a team effort this year.

Brown. Great mystery. Good upside
This year he bows his neck and drives roughly to try to score inside .... he has enough physical power and athletic ability to be a key to this team
But he is driving into a shifting double or triple team Then in the air turning over.
Previous games he got a few uneaded charging fouls
Yes. It may be time for him to sit
. Reset and become the talent he has shown. I think he will, but he is not a positive right now, but has huge potential. Well, at least better potential than shown of late.
Maybe not huge. But serviceable.

Or. When brown gets the ball we know he will put up a shot rather than pass for better shot
No doubt it rankles the coaching staf

Once again a headscratcher as to why Brown gets 4 min. in the entire game?!! :wtf: He goes from playing 22 min. (13 pts., 6 reb) in one game to once again hardly seeing the floor. This can't be he recipe for consistency out of a player.

I missed some of the game. Did he get in and start driving into triple teams for turnovers again? Because that's what got him benched two games ago.

I don't know, I blinked and missed the 4 min. he was on the floor I guess. I just don't understand how Smith can believe he doesn't demand more minutes. The games where this team has been at its very best have been the ones where Brown and/or Taylor have stepped up to be a 2nd or 3rd scoring option and have put in good work on the boards.
