LSU Scandal
So I wonder if the NCAA will do something now about LSU paying their players, like maybe take away their bid to the tourney this year or whether in a year or two they will be meaninglessly forfeiting some wins after taking some other team's spot in the field. Actually, I don't really wonder about that at all.

I wonder too. What did the NCAA do to BYU?

Re: LSU Scandal
I'm sure they'll lose their future tournament bids. Just a question of whether the NCAA will act on it quickly and take away their bid this year. Funny, LSU finally gets a good basketball coach and he is a cheater.

Emery sat out a year and then was suspended 9 games. BYU also lost a couple of scholarships.Aggie in Boise wrote:I wonder too. What did the NCAA do to BYU?

I still wish the NCAA would follow up on that, they lucked out on Emery as his wife ratted him out. But I would bet he was not the only one getting goodies

Looks like it's just 1 and for 1 year. Not sure if it's being applied this season or next.

This dude will end up coaching 1A basketball in Utah, like Nick Nolte's character in Blue Chips.

I ventured over to the LSU message board and it was a interesting take. The general consensus is yes we cheat but you cant absolutely prove it and every other big program does as well so why should we be punished.

Maybe I am just naive, but I really hope that our program never gets caught up in that kind of stuff.

Every sitting out a year was on his own merit. Don't credit the NCAA with handing that down as a penalty.ProvoAggie wrote:Emery sat out a year and then was suspended 9 games. BYU also lost a couple of scholarships.Aggie in Boise wrote:I wonder too. What did the NCAA do to BYU?

Doesn't affect them because Emery is paying his own way now anyway. All comes out even. At least, that's what I heard.ProvoAggie wrote:Looks like it's just 1 and for 1 year. Not sure if it's being applied this season or next.

Re: LSU Scandal
One time, we had a missionary serving here who was an LSU fan being from Baton Rouge. I went teaching with him and we are at a girl's house, so like missionaries do all the time, he asked "Is there anything we can do for you?" and the girl said they could write her research paper for them. Just to be funny, I said that where he was from, the football players get their papers written for them. In the car after we left, I asked if he had any problem with me making that comment, and he was fine it since he thought it was funny and not far from the truth.

That goes against what we’ve been told about losing a scholarship but still being on the team.treesap32 wrote:Doesn't affect them because Emery is paying his own way now anyway. All comes out even. Re: LSU Scandal
Well thanks to the television and cable networks, this is what college sports have become. There is so much money involved, and at the P5 level, schools literally cannot spend all of the money coming in.. This is going to change as the bottom continues to fall out of the cable network subscription floor-- people are going to streaming like crazy and ESPN, for example, can no longer get the rights fees they once could. In the meantime, you have coaches out there acting like used car salesmen in order to bring in another recruit who can "keep the money flowing." And the NCAA stands by and watches because they benefit from it more than anybody else.

Re: LSU Scandal
A player can give up his athletic scholarship and walk-on to the team but he cannot receive any other type of aid and has to pay for the rest of his schooling out of his own pocket. He can also never go back on athletic scholarship. This is how I understand it. I was told that Emery's parents are well off and paying for the rest of his schooling was not a problem.aggies22 wrote: ↑March 9th, 2019, 9:15 amVery true.TheAKAggie wrote: ↑March 9th, 2019, 8:45 amThat goes against what we’ve been told about losing a scholarship but still being on the team.treesap32 wrote:Doesn't affect them because Emery is paying his own way now anyway. This is alluded to in this KSL article:
So yeah, BYU self-imposed a scholarship loss and Emery agreed to take the hit and pay his own way. So the team was unaffected.BYU offered two self-imposed penalties, including a $5,000 fine and the reduction of one men’s basketball scholarship, which will directly impact Emery, according to a source close to the program.

Yet some "dude" had to pay for Emery's Jetta.treesap32 wrote: ↑March 9th, 2019, 9:32 amA player can give up his athletic scholarship and walk-on to the team but he cannot receive any other type of aid and has to pay for the rest of his schooling out of his own pocket. I wish I could say that the NCAA will do something about this whole scandal, but it won't happen. Don't bite the hand that feeds.

Oh, they will do something. Eastern Louisiana Technical College will get hit with the death penalty.

And their interim head coach Tony Benford is the guy that Stew hired as an assistant 13 years ago, only to have him leave for another job the next day.
