Chat Negativism
Chat was a real bummer last night. Several (perhaps even most) of the fans in there seemed to take on a defeatist attitude nearly from the tip-off and spent more time b!tching about the play of certain players and calls by the ref than making constructive commentary, which was a real downer after such a fantastic season. What is up with our fan base? Is this a representative sample of how people feel? I don't think I have ever been in a chat room that was so negative in a game we were always in -- despite some poor play along the way. Life is a he11 of a lot more fun if you approach it with a glass-half-full attitude rather than constantly expecting the worst and blaming others for our misfortunes. Buck up, fans. We have never had it so good.

This is why I don't go into chat during games. It's like sitting next an old boy with his arms crossed at the games complaining about stuff even when we have a lead.

Re: Chat Negativism
Don't worry - the most important game of the year was that game regular season game at CSU.
Less sarcastically, I honestly don't think that the NM game was terribly important last night... and I'm not going to get my panties in a wad if we lose to Fresno St. tonight. I think that we're in MM regardless of what happens in the tournament. Worst case scenario, we head to the NIT and massively outperform expectations under the new coach of a lifetime, the MW POTY and a badass freshman.

My wife said something along those lines for the CSU game. She watched it while I attended with a friend, and she asked if the chat room was other fans and why they were so down on USU.

Have you guys never been in Chat? Yes it has it's moments but I think most of it is sarcastic banter and I get a kick out of it. You should have seen it when we really sucked haha

Re: Chat Negativism
Emotions run high during games, especially stressful ones. Even though we aren’t all that negative overall, sometimes those are the first thoughts that pop up in a situation like that. Chat is just where we type out those irrational thoughts even though all of us are happy with the play of the team over the season
Will respond whenever you ask what the band is doing

Not to call out one certain fan as it sounds like it was multiple but the NIT post with 7 min left in the game says it all. Stop doubting this team people and enjoy the ride.

Re: Chat Negativism
I assume many of the chatters were at the game because there were so many Aggie fans at the game that did nothing but sit. They must have been on their phones because they were not cheering at all. It was as if they were at the opera. I'm sure glad we have student that always seem to do a great job. Come on Aggie fans get into the game. Get a little exercise and stand up and cheer! Make a little noise! We have a great chance tonight to have the home court advantage. If you were not here last night make the drive today. Go Aggies!

I agree: it's usually some decent sarcastic back-and-forth. It can be occasionally funny and even insightful. Don't know if I've ever seen it immediately as negative as I saw last night. Truly bizarre.

Re: Chat Negativism
I use to chat all the time. I haven't really been in there much in the past several years. I don't really get too wrapped up in any negativism. It is a window into the minds of fans at that moment. Most of the time, I am thinking the same thing. It is a good way to vent some frustration. When you look back, knowing the outcome, it can be annoying. That is what being a fan is all about. I have really enjoyed this year because the last 7 have been so bad. I had forgotten how awesome it is to talk about the Bubble and winning the tournament. I hope it continues.
I think the early negativity was the fan in us trying to cope with such an important game, and I am always sarcastic in Chat so just make it rule #2.

I only go in to get the feeds....I won't watch people saying our players suck, or are not MWC caliber and on and on. I get emotion watching a game, but it's really pretty childish sometimes.

Re: Chat Negativism
When UNM went up 8, that is where I began to lose hope. Fortunately, Weir got T’d up and helped turn the momentum back in our favor and the rest is history.
I’ll admit I was ragging hard on Brito, especially in the first half, but he was a turnover machine and such a liability anytime he touched the ball. But I’ll say this, we wouldn’t have won last night without him. He elevated his play in the final 15 minutes and it felt like the rest of the team feeded off of it. His 3-pt with about 2:20 left to put us up 4 was clutch and his strip of Jackson with about 40 seconds left sealed the win.

Technically you read them. Also, I can see why many would say that Brito sucked in the first half last night. I think he would say the same thing, only in Portuguese. Again, it is raw emotion in the moment.

Re: Chat Negativism
It was interesting when Brito was struggling and the lynch mob was out. To me it was another illustration of great coaching. Smith took him out, and on one of the few times that I've seen on TV he got down and had a fairly long conversation with him. It wasn't "in your face" stuff. It was more along the lines of "hey....just settle down, I have confidence in you...you've helped get us this far and you are important to getting us out of this situation".

There was a time when we were trained to believe that we could win any game in the Spectrum during Stew's tenure. That was the only time I could recall that Aggie pessimism in me not being an issue. It's just hard to erase decades of bad experiences.

Re: Chat Negativism
Oh, it can be annoying in the moment -- not just with 20/20 hindsight. I had to call out a few fans. It's the difference between optimism and pessimism. While I am definitely a realist about the Aggies' prospects after years of cheering for teams that can never quite get over the hump, I still approach individual games with hope and optimism. We all encounter optimists and pessimists in our lives. I prefer optimists.

Re: Chat Negativism
I wonder if it's just part of the nature of being a USU fan. I know my perspective is highly biased, but I swear that no team in NCAA history has snatched defeat from the jaws of victory more times than USU has. (It happens more often in football, but I still remember the Pacific game. Or the Jerry Green game. Or the Weber State game in the late 90's. Or this year's home game against Fresno, for that matter.) Even when USU has a huge lead, I'm always on pins and needles waiting for them to blow it. And when we go down by even a couple points (especially against a team where we are favored), I start thinking, "Crap. It's over." It's totally irrational PTSD, but I think some of these games have scarred me for life. And based on some of the comments I read on online forums, I'm not the only one. After a comfortable victory, I sometimes chuckle when I reread the game threads and see people going into an absolute panic once our opponent gets within 20. (I don't chuckle during the game, because I am panicking as well. lol!)

Is what bugs me. This negativity really drives me up the wall with our fanbase. You realize almost every fanbase feels their team has a special ability to choke, right? The problem is we let it suck the joy even out of winning if the game is close. So tired of all of the woe is me stuff.

We have been instructed by those who truly understand sports that it is damaging to our team to be cheerleaders, so the alternative is to look for everything wrong that our team does. It is what real, knowledgeable fans do. You will understand someday as you attain the highest level of maturity and wisdom.
