I’m quite surprised about Fresno State. I thought Utah would also make it as the #3 team from the PAC-12. How that conference has fallen!

How many of the 32 were automatic qualifiers as regular season conference champions?

East coast bias, two true western teams? Ncaa seedlings and their placement were also not right, western conferences need to get together and make this an issue, it’s ridiculous!

San Diego was the 7th place team in the conference. They made it in over 3-6 and any MWC team. Doesn't really make a lot of sense.

Is San Diego a typo and it should be San Diego State?

This from SDSU forum:

This question illustrates the power of fan delusion. Our resume isn’t close to being NIT worthy. Unlike the NCAA tournament, the NIT doesn’t value games played in a three game tournament more than any other. There are two categories of teams in the NIT, automatic bids and at-large bids. All AB’s are regular season conference champions who failed to win their conference tournament. The remaining spots are allotted to ALB’s. ALB’s get in based mainly their NET ranking. So, participants are either judged by their dominance during conference play or by the entirety of their record. Bad teams have an easier path to the NCAA tournament than the NIT. The Aztecs have had a much better shot at the NCAA tournament for three years running.

The other tournaments are pay to play garbage fests. One only accepts teams from mid-major conferences, both are less than 15 years old, and neither possesses even a whiff of prestige:

•The College Basketball Invitational (CBI) is a men's college basketball tournament created in 2007 by The Gazelle Group. The inaugural tournament occurred after the conclusion of the 2007–08 men's college basketball regular season. The CBI selects 16 teams that are not selected for the NCAA Tournament or the National Invitation Tournament[1] (NIT), and who are willing to pay a $50,000 entry fee to participate.[2] In the CBI, [3] teams compete on home courts. The CBI is a single-elimination tournament until the final two teams are determined, after which the championship is determined by a championship series with a best-two-out-of-three format.

•The CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) is an American men's college basketball post-season tournament created in 2009 by Collegeinsider.com. In 2012, it expanded to 32 participating teams. In 2016 and 2017 the tournament featured 26 teams. The 2018 tournament had 20 teams. The Tournament is oriented toward mid-major and small schools who did not get selected for the NCAA or NIT tournaments.

And YBU 85? Maybe these schools turned down an invite??? There, by my count, were 9 automatic bids that went to champs or co-champs of their conferences.

And San Francisco was 74. The big outliers were Georgetown and San Diego. Otherwise, the at-large teams seem to track the NET reasonably well. There weren’t a lot of western teams who stood out this year. San Diego is surprising.

CBI

The CIT has been set, and SUU will host a game.

The CBI has been announced, including UVU.

Both tournaments accept teams with losing records and it seems clear that a lot of schools aren’t interested. For example, West Virginia (14-20) is hosting a CBI first round game against Grand Canyon.

Here is an article about USF not being invited to the NIT and then stating home:

I would be somewhat surprised. Granted the NIT is not the NCAA tournament, but it is a fairly prestigious tournament. Schools like Georgetown, Texas, NC State, Clemson, and Alabama all accepted bids and didn't "big time" the tournament. About a month ago it looked like USU might end up in the NIT and considering the early expectations most were happy to be considered. You get to play at Madison Square Garden, and it isn't the worst consulation for an average to slightly above average season.

San diego is a weird one. Other than that it isnt that surprising. Sdsu wasnt really good for most of the year.

Quite surprised to see West Virginia and DePaul take bids -- usually the P6 consider anything less than an NIT bid beneath their station.

Agreed. I can not believe Huggins is going to coach a CBI game.

Such BS, both were deserving.
San Diego State had 3 Q1 wins along having a 20 win season.
Fresno State had a good NET ranking, beat us on the road, and a record that was even better than San Diego State.
It is official that the NIT is a joke.
