UNC breaking the zone
Washington’s zone does not seem to be affecting UNC at all.
In fact UW does not look as “handsy” as they did against us. Why is that, UNC confidence with the ball, ability to make quick decisions about passing?

Re: UNC breaking the zone
UNC has guys that can break the zone with the dribble so UW can’t be as aggressive. We didn’t so they could clamp down on our shooters.
And of course Washington is missing open 3s now

Re: UNC breaking the zone
They play Syracuse every year. They know about this zone. Plus they are just better than us.

Re: UNC breaking the zone
There are alot of offenses and defenses that would cause us problems, but not UNC, cause UNC has all-americans and we don't.

UNC had 10 McDonald's All-Americans and Logan has a McDonald's.

4 if you count Hyrum and Smithfield.
UW Is forcing turnovers, which is keeping them close.

Re: UNC breaking the zone
Exactly. Comparing the way it was executed the 2 versions of their zone is apples and oranges. If they had played the same way against UNC as they did against us, they would have got shredded.Intermeddler wrote: ↑March 24th, 2019, 1:24 pmUNC has guys that can break the zone with the dribble so UW can’t be as aggressive. That might be my favorite Stew quote of all time. Taken from the Maui Invitational press conference before our game against Florida in ‘99.
"They got up to get excited... then they displayed all 5 stages of grief."

Re: UNC breaking the zone
Predicable
Washington goes back to shooting terrible against UNC.
31% on 3s
40 % on FTs
38 % from the field
Washington came really close to pulling an upset on Gonzaga this season, and Washington played that level of a game against us.

It is just how it works in the tournament. I’m excited for next year and happy for the experience this year.

Re: UNC breaking the zone
Yep we got about as good of a draw as we could have asked for. Our best seed ever and against a team that hadnt been playing well over the last few weeks of the season. They just outplayed us and outschemed us and hit their shots.

Re: UNC breaking the zone
Once we started pressing them Washington reverted to their old ways of turning over the ball and hurrying their shots. The three pointer from the wing when it was a one-point game was probably the turning point in giving them their confidence back. Plus, it's hard to continue pressing when you only have a seven man rotation. We were gassed and missed a lot of shots inside the lane down the stretch.

Re: UNC breaking the zone
I think if we played Washington again, we'd come out with the W. Many of the PAC12 teams fared better the second time the played Washington because they knew which adjustments to make and how to break their suffocating press/zone.

I really think they played pissed against us because nobody was picking them. They play with something to prove and we didn’t imo.

Re: UNC breaking the zone
Hate to say it but having McEwen would have helped. He has the ability to dribble drive the gaps and then rise up and hit the mid-range shot. Sam really struggled with that. I would never trade Sam for Koby but having a Koby-like player would have really helped us in that game. I thought Brock had some nice moments and played with some toughness and confidence. I think he will be a better all around offensive threat next year and help take some of the load off Sam.

Re: UNC breaking the zone
We cut the lead to one point just under ten minutes to play. After that time out, we fell apart. Washington hit a three then we turned the ball over, they missed a shot, we turned it over again, they hit another three and we call time out. Now down 7, we come out of the time out and turn it over again. In the last quarter of the game, we had 20 possessions (not counting offensive rebounds). We turned the ball over 7 times, shot 5-6 from the foul line and 1-12 from the field. We scored 8 points the rest of the way. Just a complete meltdown.

UNC breaking the zone
When we went on our run we worked the post with two players. It worked because UW all but played a 4 out zone to stop Sam, and moving him to the high post did not alter that. Once we fed the low post and then cut from the high post we had the advantage. UW took that away and we were done.
